Love this plane. Thanks to the Americans for passing quite a few on to the Fleet Air Arm - put to good use over Pangkalan Brandan, Pladjoe, Soengi Gerong, Sakashima Gunto and many other places with unpronounceable names!
I'm just glad they stopped calling it the 'Tarpon' ... Doesn't quite have the same ring to it!
The powerful sound of the Avenger brought back my memories as a TBM pilot during the spruce budworm spray programs in New Brunswick, Canada from 1979 to 1989. They were a great airplane to fly. And they had some pretty colourful characters flying them, too. The sound of the R-2600-20 swinging the thirteen foot one inch Hamilton Standard prop meant business, and the TBM delivered. Thanks for the video.
i remember when i was younger, i used to love these planes like no ones buisness. i still love them, but love other planes as well... i wish i could shake all the mens hands who flew not only these planes, but other WW2 fighter and fighter/bomber planes. the feats some of these pilots went through, was probably like literally, flying into "hell" (pardon my language). but flying into a barrage of enemy fire and with enemy in the skies, took guts and heart of steel to go on each mission
I get transported back to 1980 when I watch this clip. At the time our AirForce Museum here in New Zealand restored their early model Grumman built TBF-1 Avenger to taxi status and I was lucky enough to ground run her several times. This clip shows the late model TBM-3 built by General motors.
My hats off to your Dad, this video was a bit special because it may have been the last military aircraft to fly at the Grumann Ironworks Plant in front of many retired Grumman employees.
Hmm, for some reason, my browser didnt load all the video clip. Didnt see the part with the Mustang the first time, but I see know what you're talking about. Please accept my apologies.
hate to break it to you, but that's NOT a Merlin engine. Merlin's are V-12 engines, usually in Mustangs, Spitfires, etc. The Avenger has a 1,700 hp Wright Cyclone twin row radial engine.

Actors Richard Boone, and Paul Newman flew as turret gunners in TBM's in WW2. Boone was and ordnanceman, Newman a radioman.
