Aye clearly nostalgia aint what it used to be???? Sunlight in the Morning try West Kilbride post St Andrews night storm and a late wine fuelled chinwag with yer crazy polymath Mum.....aye and there are Castles in the air....Law Hill Castle
Hard not to reflect back listenning to this beautiful song. Mine goes back to the days where mothers were homebodies, and their husband, children and home were their priority. No thongs, just cottontails, an apron when cooking, a smile and warm hug when you came home from work. Few worries, enough money to pay the bills, family discussions. This electronic commercial media has murdered family life and I now am part of it. Sad as it may be I grieve the past and fear the future.
@Blackduck46 I'm with you on everything you said. I, too, remember a gentler time. Us children running in and out of all our friends houses, mom's making peanut butter sandwiches for all the neighborhood kids - shoestring potato chips, too!. Everyone was like family. Wish I could go back.
When I first heard this it fit so right toward my goal of moving wife and family out of New York City, my hometown. Though I'll never get NYC completely out of my life, I enjoy the peace that I've found in the hills of Pennsylvania.
This song reflects a less hectic and calmer time in our lives.. Don Mclean is a true reflection of all that is good in the world. A haunting song of timeless magic and beauty, magnificent posting. Thank you.
don mclean is a lyrical genius that is why there isnt more of the same elsewhere,my fav lyric comes from him "beams of blue come flickrin through my window pane like gypsy moths that dance around the candle flame"its from the song empty chairs.classic
This song was first a single in 1971 prior to his breakthrough success with "American Pie" but it failed to chart except for a very minor placing on the Billboard Easy Listening chart. In 1972 the song was the flip side to "Vincent." But it took this new version to finally get the song onto Billboard's Hot 100 as an A-side, and it spent a couple of weeks in the Top 40 in late 1981 and early 1982.
I was only 4 yrs old when this was released but I vividly remember this on the radio while in the car with my Mom. Like Glen Campbell's "Gentle on my mind", "Castles" transports me back to the quiet, simple, and safe little village we lived in in the late 60's, early 70's. Thank you for posting this song!
My Most Fav Song; As It was the Song I sang to my first G.F Connie S. a life time ago. Went back to our Reunion sang it again to her to get my heart back. I'sm still single. This is Timeless!!
Don McLean was a protege of Pete Seeger, one of America's most cherished folk singes. Don was a solid journeyman folk singer who hung out on the uppermHudson river on an old riverboat. Castles in the Air came before the song that made his career, American Pie. Don McClean with his album Tapestry in which Castles is a selection was an outstanding player in the folkie era.
Don McLean a truly gifted American. Pure inspiration. This is true music, real meaning, not artificial like the rubbish churning out today in some psuedo talent reality show.
I feel sad listening to this slow version. I prefer the fast original from '70 posted by vbvbvb088. Don sounds so young and carefree there, in the show at a school and in the song itself.
shnazzy tune, makes me think of all my sisters music and what she used to get me to listen to that wasn't about killing murdering or bling bling, ya know?
Should mention that this is NOT the original. Not sure when Don re-recorded it, but this is a newer version. The original is the first track on his first album, Tapestry (1970).
@bluegin24 I agree. Which is probably the reason I wanted to find it so bad. I love beautiful sad songs.... but at the same time, which makes me feel good too! :)
Never in my life, heard of this song & a few others I've found.... thanks for youtube and that new radio station that plays a lot of oldies music, I would have never know. This- before my time, but I do appreciate this kind of music than the crappy shit that's out nowadays!!
@alottaUtube You are absolutely correct about the music (?) out there now. I gotta say though, this isn't before my time....it's sort of my prime time. If you like beautiful sad songs, listening to a lot of oldies should make you very happy! The 60's and 70's were a great time for a wide variety of songs. YouTube is wonderful!
I love this song, but not this slow version. I think the real original is the fast version. Don sounds so young and carefree in that one. And it looked like he was the one on the motorcycle in the end.
don mclean, one of the greats that dosent get enough credit. and i love you so is the most beautiful love song ever. empty chair might be one of the saddest.
O M G, I've been hearing this song for weeks & didn't know the name of the song..... finally search it last weekend with names like "i love the country life".... "City boy" etc... & none were this song. So, last night at work, I heard it again on the new radio station 93.1FM, & I heard him say twice "Castle Walls". Wrote it down in case i forget. Type it on YouTube, & clicking a man by the name of Don McLean.... & here it is, baby! yeaaaaaah :D
@alottaUtube hehe, it happened to me too, but it was about Vincent (Starry Starry Night).. I watched an episode of Simpsons and at some point of the action that song came in and I heard "starry starry night", I remembered those words, searched them in youtube and BAM!! the great Don McLean rised in front and I just got sooo happy.. now I searched for some other songs since I started to like McLean so much and bumped into this BEAUTIFUL song..
@Fazioli91 I hope you discover his other beautiful songs, like Winter Has Me in its Grip, Oh My What a Shame, The Pride Parade, The Grave, General Store, The More You Pay, and so many others that I discovered only recently when I watched the YouTube Mix for Don McLean, all 92 videos.
I absolutely love this. I love all kinds of music and I appreciate all the old artist like John Denver and the guy who sang Big Iron.(Forget his name lol.) But I can truly say this is an awesome song!!!
@onisac50 Absolutely! Really gives his full range opportunity to shine! If American Pie was a bit too long and Vincent too dark, this song is perfect, peaceful and beautiful.
Hi kyojaewon, I quite agree with your comment at the top of the page about this song being a favourite since childhood. I'm 37 and have loved this song since well before I really knew what it meant. Now, it somewhat describes who I am... :-)
No wonder someone was inspired to write "Killing Me Softly" after seeing and hearing Don Mclean perform. If ever there was a pefect song, this would be it.
One of the world's greatest ever songwriters and performers for sure. If he was not born to hold a guitar and sing then Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers weren't meant to boogie. Great song.
I had to move from N.Y.C.to the Shenandoa Mountains in Va. when I was 21 & fell in love. My boyfriend back in Queens demanded I come back. This song changed my life because it was exactly how I felt. I made him move there instead & it was the biggest mistake of my life. He was such a jerk but thank you Don Mclean for the inspiration.
First heard this as the b side to Vincent, when first released in UK. Fabulous song, Thanks for posting. or maybe it was b side of American Pie short version
I wish my friends were into this kind of music. I hate listening to "Katy Perry this" and "Lady Gaga that" or "Lil' Wayne or whoever all those rappers are whatever" all the time. I mean, come on boys, there is real music out there.
@superduperplad They'll get there. There's a place for the fluffy stuff, and there's some real depth there too. Hard to hear sometimes because there's so much formula, but don't dismiss it all. But this is immense, no question.
I love this song I found out pinkie DonMclean when I was 10 I'm not like kids these days I love oldfolk and love ERVERY song that don sang what happened to the world y cant people love old music I'm crying right now ;(

This Song Just brings back memories....Of every song in the world, this is my fav.
I get cold chills as soon as the music starts still to this day:)This is a perfect example of why Don Mclean is considered and original.

if you like the way he sings it, then you need to hear (keith Harkin ) of celtic thunder sing it. besides being a great singer, he's a hunk.
