@sameside18 I believe it's a mix of both since if you pay attention to the background you can see some of the scenes. If they had to go back to make changes then I'm guessing they just reanimated the shots to fit the actors or vice versa. :)
I wonder how they capture high quality recordings if they stand that far away from the mic. I use that same mic for music and if you are that far away then the recording will sound like you are far away.
@nickster181 It is Lee Unkrich. He has joked about how he and Ed Helms are always mistaken for the other when they are walking about. Few other times he has posted a pic with him hanging out with Ed Helms with a caption such as "Congratulating my buddy Helms on Toy Story 3." as a joke.
Recalling some of the film roles Joan Cusack did back in the late 1990s, I wasn't surprised that she got the role of Jessie, as they have one similarity: wild girl.
However, most of her roles since the 2000s have given me the impression of her as a 'middle-aged woman with a stern character', and this makes me wonder if she still had it in her to play Jessie again. This video showed that she still had it.
@Phuckinthapool The movements that you are seeing do help in numerous ways. It may seem silly that the actors are bouncing around and moving around alot while they are doing a VOICE performance, but it truly does help in the long run. It helps them get into their characters so they can do a better performance since they are so into it.
@Phuckinthapool It also helps the animators. When animating they are relying on storyboards, color scripts, what the director says and etc. Seeing these sessions on film can help the animators on some scenes. If you compare some of these takes with the movie scenes then you might see the character is doing a similar movement or facial expression that their actor is doing on the screen.
@Phuckinthapool It's also been noted in the TS3 commentary that the performance is necessary to some degree. When talking about Lotso's character (for example), Lee Unkrich and Darla Anderson have commented on how Ned Beatty's physical performance was just as important as his vocal for the movie. It really helped the animators figure out how Lotso should act physically while on the screen. The same goes for all of the other characters.
@Phuckinthapool Sometimes their facial expressions and physical movement depend alot on the actor who is providing their voice. So, it may look "unnecessary", but it's really not.
All the times I'd watched Toy Story - countless times, all the way from childhood to adulthood, and until seeing her, I'd only just realised that Jessie was Joan Cusack... the characters become so real and solid, you never imagine the voice behind the screen, even though its really obviously Joan Cusack... Aw, I feel like I've lost a bit of my childhood hahaa :(
I like the way the director is doing a bit of an impression of the voices when he goes back and forth with the actors. I'm not sure if he's doing it on purpose, but when he does Buzz, he SOUNDS like Buzz, and when he does Woody, he really sounds like him.
I love Joan Cusack, she is hysterical. Likewise, Jessie is my favorite character in the trilogy. So excitable and bubbly, but also a very complex character which I can appreciated.
@MrDustyChan Sorry it took so long to get to this. There are quite a few comments to filter through. Anyway, I'm not entirely sure how they sync the voices with everything else. I imagine that it's quite complicated. As for the monitor. The voice actors don't have anything to work with until much later. Somewhere towards I believe the middle or end of the animation process... the voice actors are called in to do some more work. During this new batch of voice sessions they might see some clips.
@MrDustyChan Seeing these clips will help them with the voice acting portion since they can picture everything more clearly. At Pixar (and I'm sure at other animation studios), the voice work is recorded on mic and camera. The animators can then watch and listen to the actors performances which gives them a "canvas" like feel sort of speak. From there the animators will fit everything to the actors voices (and sometimes), facial expressions and movements.
@MrDustyChan Also just to add one more thing. If you pay attention to the actors in this video and compare it to the specific scene in the movie, then you can see how the animators used their movements as a reference.
@MrDustyChan GUYS! LOL You are all wrong. They don't look at monitors because the videos aren't ready yet. They actually lipsync the characters by animations. Oposite to dubbing movies. After the voices are recorded the Animation department MATCH THE VIDEO to the audio ;)
the faces that joan cusack pulls are hilarious. Well done to all the cast for making an excellent movie that will never get old no matter how old we are !!
@KiamarMasterT Yes, she plays Debbie in The Addams Family Values, Judge De Salvo in My Sister's Keeper, Jenny in Raising Helen, Rosalie Mullins (The Principal) in The School Of Rock, is the narrator for the children's show Peep And The Big Wide World, and of course Jessie in the Toy Story movies. :)
@jediskunk67 There are a few sites that have this posted. I just did some digging to get them. Anyway, far as to my knowledge Pixar (as well as other animated companies), film the voice actors. They get the actors on film so they can use their facial expressions and body language to match the character(s) that they are voicing. Sometimes when you watch the voice recording sessions and the movie at the same time you'll notice that the actor and their character move the same way. :)
It's weird- Toy Story was the first movie I saw with Tom Hanks in it. I didn't know about voice actors back then- I think I was 6- so I keep thinking of Tom Hanks as being Woody. Even in other roles- that voice has power!
Wow i was just watchin hot tub time machine and joan cusacks brother John is it and i was unaware he was her sister and i said hey he really reminds me of that lady that plays jesse from toy story so i looked it up on here then wiki'd it and i was right! lol I was so proud of myslef.
