I have some friends who just don't see the night sky as I do. It's always tricky to try and explain what I see when I look up at a stellar starscape; to convey the feelings and thoughts I feel when I gaze at such a wondrous view. This video explains what I feel and think when I look up during a clear night. Thanks for posting this!
The folks there are of a gentle spirit with a big welcome mat to all who wish to learn more about what is up around those stars in the night sky. I have since my first time there, returned again and again, taking my own children there. It truly is a wonderful place. The boyfriend did not last in my life but the joy of that date, stayed. THANKS Bob F. for that wonderful night as I looked up by way of the 32 inch.
mememe2589, I am sure they did not HAVE TO put anything in this clip. It was more likely, the work of the author who took the time to create this AND it is a reflection of the strong faith of others who are keeping this observatory up and running. I am not even sure how much support the school there gives to the Observatory. Since 1988, when a boyfriend took me down there from Starkville to view the stars, I visited on and off over the years. The place welcomes all as we each learn to LOOK UP.
This video does not really represent the experience that one has when visiting for a public viewing and lecture. We have been 2 or 3 times and religion or god was never mentioned. It is all very science oriented. I was surprised to hear the religious tone at the end of the video. Maybe they had to put it in because this is serious bible belt country. Don't let the video scare you away. It is a very scientific educational experience. Mr. Hill is a fountain of knowledge about astronomy.
Mr. Hill has always believed in not cramming religion down anyone's throat, but he is a devout Christian and a Scientist in every since of the word. Rainwater is open to anyone, no matter what you believe, and keeps a very scientific approach to its educational experience. With that said, the mission statement of Rainwater Observatory is to show how "the heavens declare the glory of God." A telescope can show anyone the glory of God's creation. No Bible waiving necessary.
Hard to believe how much Rainwater has grown since I worked there when I was in high school at French Camp. It went from a little building in a cow pasture to this! The cows may not be pleased, but I am.
I attended French Camp in the 1960s and know this to be a place of excellence that is not JUST religious, although that's an important part. The Rainwater Observatory is an amazingly impressive extension of what some mighty fine people have done for thousands of kids over more than 40 years -- including me.
Regardless of your own beliefs, there is plenty of room for everyone else's.
Bible quotes for an observatory? Jobe & Isaiah? How about one from Neil deGrasse Tyson: "The more I learn about the universe, the less convinced I am that there's any sort of benevolent force that has anything to do with it, at all."
Bible quotes for this observatory are very fitting as the observatory was built and is run by staff of French Camp Academy. FCA is a Christian school-home that serves young people from broken homes and disadvantaged situations by providing a safe, structured, nurturing environment. The existence of God is continually evidenced through the work He does there. The ministry of the school has expanded over the years--one addition being the wonderful observatory featured in this video.
French Camp is the name of a tiny town located along the Natchez Trace about halfway between Tupelo and Jackson, Mississippi. At the beginning of it's founding, there was actually a Frenchman's camp (that of Louis LeFleur) at the present site of the town.
Love this video!

French Camp? Is that where kids go for the summer to learn how to say "I SURRENDER!"?
