Really? When I was in Toronto, New York, Nashville, and Mexico City I see a lot of metalheads. Although the Mexicans appear more dedicated to metal than their Northern brethren, I would say Metal is popular in North America it's just not as a big of a deal as the South Americans or Europeans would take.
