This was AMC big mistake. They should have kept the original, like Days did with the hourglass. Compared to the "hand and book) opening, this sounds like Muzak elevator music.

@east215 No, it was not a big mistake. They simply wanted to celebrate their 20th anniversary by expanding on the book and displaying their cast members. DOOL may have decided not expand on the hourglass and that is just fine. Felicia Behr made a great decision in 1989.

The January 2nd episode must be available somewhere. I know viewers who didn't read about the behind-the-scenes news were quite surprised to hear the opening notes of this new visuals package, and see it, instead of Agnes Nixon's hand appearing over that credenza. I wonder if Felicia Minei Behr would have given the same treatment (a CGI sequence) to Ryan's Hope, had the latter continued through this time?

I have a December 29, 1989 article that describes the cast taking numerous for a "new" opening sequence to be shown in 1990.
