The AI would have some bad moments in the first game, like when I was bleeding out at 100 health with Francis covering me. He'd start to get me up, almost finish, then he saw one zombie on the other side of the roof. I started covering him with a pistol, but he felt unloading 4-5 autoshotgun blasts into it and reload before helping me up was best... repeat 7 times until I died. At least the AI in lfd2 made the bots behave better, although they still get bad sometimes.
Left 4 Dead 2 puts the zombie content to a innovative level. It truly is really the most gruesome thing we've ever played. If you haven't dled it and tried it yet, run to L4D2dlXcom (replace X with . ). These people now have the game for cost-free there!

That was one of the funniest bot failures I've seen. I've found impossible to finish a campaign on expert with 3 bots. They always fail miserably during the finale. Zoey ignores the horde behind her while she shoots at a Special Infected
And they always run into my Molotovs or bunch up together when boomers appear, and they don't let the pipe bombs do their job 'cause they shoot the infected before the bomb explodes, resulting in a wasted bomb.
i played campaign on expert with 3 bots, i made it to the safe room with louis, and while francis and bill were getting beaten by the tank, louis decides to open the door, gets pounced, and gets incaped, then the tank comes and kills us both
i tryed doing a glitch when i searched for a lobby my freind would levae it worked the only people there were me and the bots me playing as infected but when the reached the safe room the match wouldnt end i got mad BTW this was on xbox
the ai is ok but whenever theres me and zoey left alive with low health, a smoker grabs me hanging 2 die and zoey doesnt even bother shooting him instead she limps her way 2 melee the smokers tongue but i die before she saves me,thats why i kill zoey when i die and try it again :(
actually the AI are trying to help him in the end they just cant reach him and they are programmed to try and smack him down when hes hanging like that but they arent tall enough! this is why AI fail
and just so you know theres dlc coming out the 21st survival mode and i think a new campaign its gonna be sick!

As for the witch scene. I don't know why you would think 4 people could just pass by a witch that close to the ladder without setting her off. You, the player, also the leader of the group, should be blamed for that mistake :p Bill successfully helped Francias back to his feet then got PULLED off by a Smoker. Only thing at fault by the bot was not using its gun when it should have. (when trying to heal with a zombie around). You'll probably have better luck on Expert with friends ;)
The game was built to play with friends/other players online. -The bots are useful at times and other times... they can be pretty bad. They weren't coded to complete the level for you so they will have some limitations. They are set to follow the closest player and make attempts at saving the closest player/bot if needed. If someone is in trouble they find the fastest route to help that player. Throw in different levels of elevation into the situation ( 2:00 ) and they can get a little confused.

Not to mention the fact that if you're a Boomer at Death Toll hiding in the woods... the AI will somehow sense you in the woods and just shoot you once and you die. It's pretty stupid.
L4D is a great game, but the bots are arguably the most flawed part of the game. I guess it was valve's anticipation that more people would play it online, which may have been why the bots are flawed.
I found it interesting. I'm not saying the dev team is incompetant (obviously they are not if they managed to create such a fun game) but I went through their commentary mode and one of the things they said their strengths were in was AI.
I mean, it's better than a lot of games I've played but some of the stuff that happens in the game is pretty baffling (like the stuff outlined in the clip above).
The AI Bots have excellent aim.....but that's about it. They are often either stingy with health, or they heal you to often. They stand in the way of fire WAY too much and sometimes are just extremely stupid when dealing with special infected.
And Bill in my opinion, is the worst! He'll do absolutely nothing sometimes.

I almost fell off a cliff the bots didn't get me until 20 minutes later. Half the the time they were doing nothing but standing around. Seemed like I was doing all the work while they followed me around like idiots.

Making competent AI for a game as un-scripted as L4D must be a really hard undertaking. On one hand they really can't make them too good, especially on expert difficulty, but on the other, they must be able to react to situations in proper ways that allow the human player(s) to progress if they are skilled. Seeing as you were able to get to no mercy #5 there must have been many times before when the bots were doing their job and therefore I don't really think it's fair to call them "broken".

Got all the way to the very end, and while running to get into the rescue vehicle, Francis decides it's a great idea to go upstairs in the house. He stays in there 'till we're all in the vehicle, then proceeds to jump out the window and get raped by a tank. If they were smart enough to follow me and get in the vehicle when I do, I would have had the achievement. :(

Bots are the last resort. L4D must be played with humans.
Same happens to bot special infected, they're usually bad.
Valve even gave the Tank (in bot mode) the ability to kill incapped survivors because bot Tanks sucks so much.

My friend kills his friends right at the end and then goes to the helicopter.
He also shoots them before he starts the level until you need to help them and he says(his character):"you better cover me!" and laughs...

Not to mention the fact that if you're a Boomer at Death Toll hiding in the woods... the AI will somehow sense you in the woods and just shoot you once and you die. It's pretty stupid.

L4D is a great game, but the bots are arguably the most flawed part of the game. I guess it was valve's anticipation that more people would play it online, which may have been why the bots are flawed.

I found it interesting. I'm not saying the dev team is incompetant (obviously they are not if they managed to create such a fun game) but I went through their commentary mode and one of the things they said their strengths were in was AI.
I mean, it's better than a lot of games I've played but some of the stuff that happens in the game is pretty baffling (like the stuff outlined in the clip above).

They aren't, but they seemed to spend so much time on the other things in the game that they didn't have as much devoted as this.
Odds are it will be patched someday though.

The AI Bots have excellent aim.....but that's about it. They are often either stingy with health, or they heal you to often. They stand in the way of fire WAY too much and sometimes are just extremely stupid when dealing with special infected.
And Bill in my opinion, is the worst! He'll do absolutely nothing sometimes.

I played this game at my friends house the other day.
I almost fell off a cliff the bots didn't get me until 20 minutes later. Half the the time they were doing nothing but standing around. Seemed like I was doing all the work while they followed me around like idiots.

Yeah, campaigning with bots is the dumbest.
BUT they're total champs in Versus on Blood Harvest for their mystical abilities to see through foliage no matter how dense it is.

Making competent AI for a game as un-scripted as L4D must be a really hard undertaking. On one hand they really can't make them too good, especially on expert difficulty, but on the other, they must be able to react to situations in proper ways that allow the human player(s) to progress if they are skilled. Seeing as you were able to get to no mercy #5 there must have been many times before when the bots were doing their job and therefore I don't really think it's fair to call them "broken".

you can advance to any stage you like in the PC version, right off the bat, which is what I did. so, I didn't go through the previous levels.
These videos were all in a row too: they weren't like, three outtakes out of 30 videos or something.

Hehe good vid. I love l4d, it's so fun. Last night I was trying for the nothing special achievement. Got all the way to the very end, and while running to get into the rescue vehicle, Francis decides it's a great idea to go upstairs in the house. He stays in there 'till we're all in the vehicle, then proceeds to jump out the window and get raped by a tank. If they were smart enough to follow me and get in the vehicle when I do, I would have had the achievement. :(
