From what I've been reading, Journey was interested in more than just another Steve Perry without the asshole. They had a number of candidates like that in their Journey tribute groups. But they were looking for someone with greater promise. That's why Neal Schon took to the internet. They had bunches of songs like this one, and they wanted someone who could get the most out of them.
It wasn't Pineda's ability to copy Journey that impressed Schon. It was his ability to copy just about anyone.

There are all kinds of comments on these sites trashing Arnel Pineda, but they seem to be coming from only one or two sources. Given the reception that Journey has received with their new singer and after hearing songs like this one, it doesn't appear to me that Journey is going to have any problem rejuvenating themselves. This is a terrific song, and it is uniquely Pineda. I doubt that Steve Perry would have sung the song this way.

There are all kinds of comments on these sites trashing Arnel Pineda, but they seem to be coming from only one or two sources. Given the reception that Journey has received with their new singer and after hearing songs like this one, it doesn't appear to me that Journey is going to have any problem rejuvenating themselves. One or two flamers aren't going to have much effect.
This is a terrific song, and it is uniquely Pineda. I doubt that Steve Perry would have sung the song this way.
