what are your heads top and bottom? and i noticed that you don't have suspension mounts on the rack toms, is the keystone mount positioned on the shell in such a way that it doesn't choke it's resonance? thanks, i love your kit and your sound :]
@YakuzaCracker In this vid I'm using coated Evans G2 on top and clear G1 bottoms. While I did have the mounts on the drums back then, I'm now running Gauger RIMS mounts on the three racks - I just wanted a little more sustain from the drums. Thanks for the compliments!
Awesome!!!! Great looking kit, fantastic sound all around and can't say enough of what a great style of playing you have. Very fluid across the entire kit and tastefully done.....wish I was as good is all I can say......been out of drumming for about 6 years after playing for 25 years...got blown away with this vid and thinking of starting back up again. Looks like a got a long way to go to gettin' back into it. Will look for more of your vids...Just awesome is all I can say now!!!
@bleener Hey thanks....forgot to ask but is the color of your kit blue sparkle or blue glass glitter? Gonna get my kit in blue glass glitter (blue is fav color). Just wondered. Anyways, just watchin' your vid again and I'm blown away with how good those Ludwig's sound and look. And I can't say enough of how well you play; in my prime awhile back I didn't play as "fluid" as your style is. I think that's just amazing how easy you make it look. As I said, I've got a lot of practicing to do.
@ludwigdrummer1 My kit is the classic Blue Sparkle. I contemplated the Blue Glass Glitter, but that wrap is a little thicker and the ones I've seen with the glitter finishes in person don't have as nice a seam where the wrap overlaps.
Great sounding kit except for the kick drum. It sounds like the mic is distorting real bad on that drum. Maybe to close or over-driven on recording? Every other drum sounds great
@gmd1417 I think it's more likely the conversion on YouTube. Although I'm listening to the video in my studio right now on monitors that really emphasize distortion when it's present and I'm not really hearing it.
@oRadioheado At the moment, I'm liking the slightly more "open" sound of the GMAD; I haven't tried a SuperKick on my drum as every time I've played one on another I haven't liked either the tone or the feel. Perhaps one day...
@bleener thank you, would you say that you are able to have a more modern sound from the drums with some of the heads you have been using. People say to me that ludwigs are one trick ponys stuck in the sixties but of course with the stock single ply ludwig heads on then they are bound to sound like that. What are your thoughts on this? I've never heard a maple classic in person with anything other than stock heads on and your chocie of heads sems to bring the kit into sounding more modern?
@oRadioheado I've owned and played Ludiwg drums that were from the 50's or 60's to current ones. When I tune them the way I like to hear my drums, it doesn't matter when they are from - they sound like what you hear in this and my other videos. I could make my current Ludwig Classics that are two years old sound like drums from the 60's if I wanted to, just as I can make an older kit sound modern - it's definitely down to head choices and how one tunes.
@bleener I think it's just the connotation. Unfortunately, I see it a lot. Most people who buy Ludwigs are classic drummers who don't need a double pedal for their style. Double bass drummers simply don't realize the greatness of Ludwig. I literally have a friend who thinks that Ludwigs are terrible solely because of the drummers that use them. It's depressing how immature the drumming community has become.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX Fascinating! It kind of amazes me that anyone would think something as simple as a Brand™ would dictate a style of playing or sound or anything. I would sound the same on a Tama or Sonor or Yamaha or DW or (insert drum name here...). :-)
@bleener Yea, I agree with you there. I literally showed that particular friend THIS video because he said he didn't like Ludwigs. He said "sounds like cock". I was baffled at his response, as this is one of the best sounding kits on YouTube at the moment. At least some of us still realize the greatness of Ludwig!
@LOLRyanTheKidLOL I custom ordered the kit and chose the specific drums and sizes all at the same time; this was not a "package kit" to which I added more drums. You can buy the same thing at any Ludwig dealer.
@bleener Perhaps to a non drummer, but we drummers wouldn't think its boring if you explain how you tune your drums. We would be learning something useful. By the way you are an awesome drummer. Love your drum set. My favorite color. Im looking to getting a Ludwig acoustic set. To date i only own an electric Roland set.
Hey man nice playing and the kit sounds perfect! I am really thinking about buying some classic maples but wanted to know if you have ever put clear heads (Ambassadors, Emperors, G1's or 2's whatever) on these and how did they sound, I have never seen or heard Ludwig's with anything other then batters even though batters are my favorite I am just curious how versatile they are with other head choices.
Thanks for the compliments! I actually have clear heads on them right now - G2 batter, G1 reso. They sound killer - a little more "wet" sounding than with coated. I also find they sustain a little better with the clear heads. I'm working up another video and that will be with the clears, so hang tight!
Thanks! They are the Istanbul Alchemy 13" Custom Mix hihats. They feel great and are a very quick-responding pair of cymbals. I also have 14" medium Traditionals when I need a little more weight to the sound.
Those drums sound great...cymbals too. I own a few Ludwig kits and I sold a couple, which I wish I still had. I also own drums from other companies and have played just about everything out there, and Ludwig really is the best. No drums are as sweet sounding and feeling, none look as good, and none are as versatile. Ludwig maple drums can and have been used in every musical genre and they sound incredible no matter how you tune them. Whatever sound you're looking for, Ludwig can give you.
It's the classic Blue Sparkle wrap. I thought long and hard about wrap vs/lacquer (my previous kit was a lacquer Tama Starclassic maple) hoping the wrap wouldn't take the tone away from the shell. So far, I've not found that to be the case - these drums just sing.
Those are great sounding drums. You should offer your expertise in drum tuning to Memphis Drum Shop. Their demos are not that great sounding. Will you be expanding this drum set?
Is that an iPad on your left? What is that running into if anything? Im interested in the possibilities as far as recording with iPads or incorporating them into recording setups as controllers to make life easier. Sick kit and playing by the way.
Sweet man I wish I could have afforded these. What did they run you? I went with the centential set, which I love, but there is nothing like classic maples :)
There's a little EQ on the toms - just to take out a touch of the mids that can be a little overwhelming to a mic placed 2" away from the head. Nothing drastic, though.
@bleener I'm looking at a set on ebay at the mo....bonham sizes....classic maple....Nice drums....I wanna tune em real low, not too sure if they will hold the low end tuning as well as, say, DW. Having said that tho, for my money, Ludwig just has 'something'...(sometimes I dont know if its just something in my head as a result of all the big names who played Ludwig...) its hard to know what to buy....there seems to be huge uptake on the vintage 3 ply maple with re-rings....
@jmdrummer7 it's mega-low end i'm after. My 2 cents on low end is that the best shells in drum making are shells that handle low tuning really well. With respect, most if not all shells can handle mid to high range tuning and sound acceptable/good/great. (DW has been great in this regard but lately i'm told consistancy in kits is an issue)
With this in mind im thinking Tama bubinga elite. But the price is extortionate. A bonham style set-up wil cost almost $6000.00 ish (€4000 +)
@zealberg If it helps, I own a Ludwig maple classic kit(12,16,22) w/ the Waterfall Bubinga finish and the Ludwig shells are very consistent, they hold a low tuning very good. I tune my 8x12 low and it holds w/ no buzzing or flat tones. Also, I used to own the cheaper accent custom version of the Zep Kit, these drums also held a low tuning well. Just consider if you plan on using the Zep drums to gig w/ you need at least a small suv to accomadate the bass drum, and the 16&18 floors are stage hogs
sorry for my ignorance but in a message, you talk about EQ pad, what is this ? Can i find them in a musicstore. I have a classic maple too in 22 10 12 14 and i don' understand how you do to make sound your like that.. It sound like i would like mine sound Thx
The EQ Pad is an Evans product: store.daddario.com/category/144822/EQ_Pad_Bass_Drum_Damper
It's like putting a pillow in your kick drum, but it doesn't take all of the tone away. I've used them for many years and have never found anything that works as well.
Thanks! The EMAD2 batter is a little tighter than the "wrinkle-point". The reso head is a bit higher than that. There's a EQPad inside the drum but it doesn't touch either head; it just sits on the bottom of the shell to soak up some of the "beachball" sound.
@lclakaiguy i have heard alot of good things about the new dw jazz series but in sizes like 24 kick 13 and 16 tom. alot drummers are using them, dave grohl for them crooked vultures and joey castillo from Queens of the stone age are two of them. although i have a ludwig classic maple in 24x14, 13x9 and 16x16 and absolutey love it. i fall in love with it over and over.
Thanks, man! Yup, mini-classic lugs, Elite spurs, and the Classic double-tom holder. I ordered the kit with Vibrabands and just couldn't hang with the hassle that they cause when changing heads, so I drilled the Keystone brackets to the shells! The note of the drum might be a hint shorter, but nothing too drastic and the added solidity of the toms on the holders as well as the ease of positioning more than makes up for it.
Kit sounds great and nice playing. How long did it take for your kit to get made and sent to you? I just ordered one in very similar sizes minus the 8" tom and 16" Floor tom. I also went with a 14" deep bass drum for ease of transporting and small stages.
Great playing and great drums. I am also a Ludwig player and always will be. My kit is a maple classic in waterfall bubinga(8x12,16x16,16x22,6.5x14 supra-phonic). Once again your kit looks and sounds awesome. Also,I noticed no RIMS mounts, nice classic touch.
I bought the kit with Ludwig's "Vibrabands" RIMS mounts and just found that I couldn't get the toms where I wanted them; it also made changing the heads more of a pain than I wanted to deal with. So, out came the drill and I put the mounts on the drums!
I'm ecstatic when I play. Really - I just concentrate very hard when I'm playing, so it looks like I'm miserable, but I'm actually having the time of my life.
what are your heads top and bottom? and i noticed that you don't have suspension mounts on the rack toms, is the keystone mount positioned on the shell in such a way that it doesn't choke it's resonance? thanks, i love your kit and your sound :]

Thanks for the compliments!
My kit took just over five weeks from the day I ordered it. Not bad at all!

@jmdrummer7
I bought the kit with Ludwig's "Vibrabands" RIMS mounts and just found that I couldn't get the toms where I wanted them; it also made changing the heads more of a pain than I wanted to deal with. So, out came the drill and I put the mounts on the drums!

@jmdrummer7 nice set up, I also have a Ludwig Classic Maple in Waterfall Bubinga, Ludwig is so special.

I'm ecstatic when I play. Really - I just concentrate very hard when I'm playing, so it looks like I'm miserable, but I'm actually having the time of my life.
