Holy crap that thing sounds like a monster!!!!!! Youve got a bit of an evil scientist in you dont you! Yeah I know, me too. I do little things like electrokinetic lifters and such. Making a walking machine powered by a Chevy enginge though........Thats just plain manly as hell! Im inspired....Im gonna start working on a high voltage power source powered by a V8 to power my lifer now. Or maybe make a pnuematic powered pogo stick or something........Gotta do some planning..........
it appears this machine has alot of internal binding, and is clumsy and inefficient. takes a lot of gas to go 2 feet. What has this been speed tested yet?
No, there is no binding, but heavy loads that need to be lifted. In this video, the gearing was to high and yes, it was inefficient. After installing gear reduction boxes, it is 1000 times better. After the gearing was corrected, there was problems with strength in the large crankshaft. It has since been redesigned.
no offense to anyone but it seems to me at the time of the video it was a motor stand with a lot of moving parts i would have used electric motors for each set of legs because they have less moving parts and a greater combined torque rating(4 x 200lb/ft) than 1 big motor
None taken! It's all part of an experiment. You got to try it, and if it doesn't work, fix it. Little by little, it is getting better. Once he got the gearing right, it moved with ease. Have you seen the more recent videos? The correct gearing makes all the difference! Thanks!
seems so interesting but ithink you have to redesign a lot of things to make it useful!! i see that it takes a lot of work to make just one step... and a lot of energy too!!! maybe if you try gas pistons instead a motor make the machine more flexible and easy to control, also if you ad a computer control to those air pistons... you catch my idea ? will grate to see a future video of the machine walking and maybe jumping!! so good work :P
A walking machine should solve problems caused by the use of wheels. (like non accesible terrains or something) But this monster doesn't seem to solve anyone. How much energy and time a step needs? I don't know the porpouse of it, only for the show I supose. Though it's awesome, certainly.
Yeah, that guy is one of those people that just shows up and nobody really claims him. He wasn't talking to my wife.....lucky for him, my wife would have kicked his ASS! He was pretty drunk at the time and nobody really cared about him. He still needs to be punched in the mouth!
Yes, it ended up working pretty well, but now it is under reconstruction. The crank is being redesigned. Thanks!!
It doesn't turn very easy. It has turning brakes, but it doesn't work very well. I only did the machine work on this machine. The guy who owns it came up with the design and had the legs cut from flat plate. Then he bent and welded all of the outside and inside structure. Very time consuming but it turn out awesome!
Yes, it is in the works. Right now, we are setting up springs to dampen the load. We got gear reduction boxes put in behind the trans and that helped a lot!
Yeah i think gear reduction is a must for this machine! what about rubber feet for better traction? especially in your workshop. would also help absorb some of the impact and help protect the surface you are running the machine on. then i want one! lol
when it is done? any video of this fast running?

use electric three phase motors they are better

Thanks! It actually has been redesigned. It has a much lower gear ratio now, so it moves with no problem.
gmbo6969 3 years ago
to be useful at high speeds it will need to have shocks at each leg to prevent stress fractures at the legs.
ripplesouth 2 years ago
nice concept, but 15 galons per foot , its not something usable.

It works a whole lot better now! It has gear boxes in it that drop the gear ratio way down an makes it run much better. Thanks!!

I'm surprised you didn't use hydralics.
Would have thought it would be easier to handle.
Ah well, it's still awesome, can't wait to see more of it. :)

gnarly!
im hoping to make it this year
all the way from austin texas
now if I had one of those walkers that was alot faster to make the trip on.

Ever heard of gearing.. :D

Yep, its fixed now.

If u add gears to it will it be able to lift its legs easyer? coz it dunst look to healthy when trying to rise
TwitchingPoo 3 years ago
Yes, and it does now. Look at the videos of it at burning man. It has reduced gears in it there.
gmbo6969 3 years ago
well good idea but all i hear is purring (great v8) but not much movement, yes hydraulics would have been nice but its costly,
however i wish u good luck and all the best :)

how do turn the thing around? also how did you create those legs? they look real smart!

looks awesome! however i think hydraulics may have been a better idea. More controlled, lower impact movement on the frame.

awesome - if you need to gear your th400 down to an insane crawl ratio let me know, i have the gear sets to drop it down to something manageable.

I'm letting you know!!! What ratio? How much?? Let me know right away! Thanks!!
