I hear people my age (I'm 23) and younger talk about wanting to be alive in this era. While that would be cool, I am perfectly content with living in the present. I have all of this music at my fingertips on my iPod. Back then the only way to hear the music was to own the album or listen to the radio and hope they played your favorites.
@cesar1963able I thought the same thing, and said so to some friends, who all looked at me like I was nuts. They all knew exactly who Jeff Lynne is. Nice.
@gadgetsage Maybe I should rephrase my response. I think if you were to ask who were the great "minds" of 70s music, I'm not sure Jeff Lynne would be a major topic of conversation when he should be.
This comment string is not the first time I've heard this song compared to "The Tide is High". Not to take anytihing away from Jeff Lynne, but some of his songs DO sound like other, earlier songs (i.e. Mr. Blue Sky sound very much like The Beatles "A day in the Life" Not enough to call it plaigerism, but similar chord progressions in the verses.) Afer all, many of us consider him the fifth Beatle.
Brilliant song, brilliant album, thanks for uploading. Need to get together with my old mate Mr Bridges, sitting in my garden having a few sherbets and singing the whole album through out of key again!
my parents married on this song :) my father had a lot of vinyl discs which i used to listen very often when I was young. I am so glad he introduced me to the world of '60-'70-'80 music
I love the easy beat of this song. You just want to get up, wander down the street with your hands in your pockets, sun on your face, wistful mood in your mind, swagger a bit and whistle this tune. Love it.
This was my favorite album in high school. I played it so often, it's embedded in my subconscious. I haven't heard these songs in 30+ years, but surprised myself when I clearly remembered all the lyrics. Thanks for posting these!
jeff lynne copying off olivia newton-john. give me a break. although brian wilson did get surfer girl from listening to if you wish upon a star so i guess anything's possible.
One of their more unusual tracks; LOVE the drum machine loop holding everything together. To say nothing of yet ANOTHER irrestible Jeff Lynne chorus. Ahhhh :-) :-)
Time would have been a better album had they left this song off it and added Julie Don't Live Here. Other than that fantastic album. This song is ok as a B side.
When this came out, the window of the record store was plastered with this poster. From across the street it looked like a golf ball on a tee and I wondered what the hell.... I like this album a lot. Good road music.
That's a good one. I also always felt like it sounded a little like "Love Is Strange" by Mickey and Sylvia for some reason. I suppose I'll be roasted alive for having the audacity to suggest that, as usually happens on Youtube.
Magical....

Ask any 70s follower "who was Jeff Lynne?". They won't know. One of the most underrated talents of all time.

This was Jeffs Sgt Pepper Album (he adored the Beatles), a concept of time travel, beautiful music, catchy songs that have stood the test of, 'time'

Macgyverkickyourass, I ask you, doesn't this song sound a little like Blondie's "The Tide is High" with the tropical sounding beat?

I never made the connection, but yes, both songs sound exactly the same. Hmm...

Reggae.

And that's about the similarity between those songs.
Though, as everyone can see, both songs are simply beautiful.
