Siema! Gortat is very popular in Polish Media (basketball portal and section basketball). In Polish basketball isn't the most popular sport, but hmmmm is in 3rd place :D 1st- soccer, 2nd- volleyball. This is my opinion. I'm sorry too my english :) Pozdrawiam!

To be honest, the guy who answered you before, was WAAY to optimistic. The sad truth is that Gortat isn't very popular. Of course, he always gets mentioned in the news, but he's probably only popular among basketball fans. And even if basketball is well respected and has lots of traditions - recent lack of results have lead to huge fall in popularity. Nowadays sports like soccer (always), volleyball, handball, ski jumping, athletics, swimming and F1 are more popular.

By lack of results I mean lack of wins by Polish national team or Polish club teams in Europe. That's what defines the popularity of a discipline in Poland. You have to win "medals". World Champs, Olympic games etc, or compete among the best in the world. Of course NBA is a well respected league, but since he's not yet a big "star" he has no chance to be more popular than our world champions or olympic medalists. Maybe when he'll win the NBA champ...

And F1 - Formula 1 (you know, car racing).

Duże znaczenie ma też fakt, że wtedy NBA pokazywali w ogólnodostępnej TV - mecze na żywo plus magazyn NBA bodaj w każdy piątek o ile pamiętam. Dzięki temu ludzie się bardziej interesowali i orientowali. Pewnie wtedy Gortat byłby bardziej szanowany, choć i tak dużo by mu brakowało do popularności choćby Czerkawskiego, gdy ten był All-Star w NHL. Gortat to na razie mimo wszystko tylko zmiennik. Może jak wygra tytuł mistrzowski (ma szansę) zrobi się o nim głośniej?

No też ... Wszyscy zyskują na związkach z celebrytami... Rozpoznawalność Majdana po związku z Dodą skoczyła z pięciokrotnie, a gdyby nie związek z Przybylską, to o Bieniuku słyszyeliby tylko najzagorzalsi fani futbolu... Zresztą Beckham też zyskał niesamowicie, przecież kiedy żenił się z Victorią, to ona była znaną na całym świecie gwiazdą Spice Girls, a on początkującym piłkarzem, znanym tylko kibicom....

I think 10 years ago there used to be some programs about basketball in national TV. Thanks to them basketball was very popular - youth wanted to play basketball, listen to rap and all the stuff, but it has gone and now basketball is no more popular than handball or athletics.

Football (soccer) was always popular in Poland, volleyball as well, basketball is on medium level of popularity, but in Poland things rolls like that: 4 years ago no one heard about Kubica, now we have got a lot of F1 Racing fans and experts (everyone is posting bullshit and they think they know something) with tennis and swimming is the same know (swimming for a few years right know) I think that Gortat will be famous a lot in few months ;] Everyone has to hear about that guy!
