I remember when you were just starting in forging knives. Your questions, some problems... Now you look like a pro and your knowledge is also bigger. It's pleasure to watch your videos. Best regards from Poland, Greg
@gswiaczny Thanks, Greg :) I hope this continues to be a lifelong learning process. I still have much to learn, but that's the fun of doing this. Well, that and sharing the experience.
off topic, but your hands are starting to look very dry i bet from all the fordging your doing, a hand cream like E45 will work a treat. anyway nice to see you trying other knife making skillz
hey mook btw the blades thickness should be exactly 3/32inch thick. i used 440c with my version and found that 3/32 steel makes the tolerances so tight. no blade play what so ever. the pivot is 3/16inch hole and if you polish the bronze bushings with 2000 grit wet dry or higher grit, it reduces friction in the pivot. hope this helps in your process.
@wolf5391 It does help, thanks. I guess 3/32 is about right...I had just estimated 1/10 based on how it looked next to the 1/8" stock I had. I forgot to think in standard English fractions.
constructive criticism, it would be faster, simpler and more accurate to simply buy carbon steel stock, say 1095, or 01, whichever you want of the size just a shade wider than the original blade then trace it and stock grind it out, that way its already the right shape to fit in the handle and would require only heat treatment and tempering rather than forging, normalizing, annealing, HT and temper.
@jtphantom Yeah, I plan to make a blade by stock removal too, but I wanted to see if I could forge a blade. Stock removal is definitely easier, but this is a lot of fun.
hey mook you should check out my video that i already have of pretty much the same project. wonder where his design came from.lol great minds think alike. nice vid.
Super great, first to see You on screen again ; ) second the great Idea for a hand forge folding knife in a regulary ...handhold, cool, never saw this before, like much from you great stuff : ) Happy Day and I looking forward to the result! Sepp with Fam.
Awesome video as always!!! I did notice some equipment changes though. Did you further modify your original track anvil or are you now working on a new more modified track anvil? Either way, it was very cool looking and it is nice that you're making videos again, they were missed. If possible could you add info. about your new(&/or improved) anvil in the next vid. Thanks
@justice0165 Thanks! I did post a vid a couple days ago on the anvil mods. Basically, I had it chopped in half, one half milled flat, and the other half I mounted upright in concrete. It works great now.
@nickbownz I took this on as a "let's see if I can do it" kind of task :) So far, it seems to be working out. As to making an entire folding knife from scratch...I'm not sure I'm up to that just yet.
@Makermook Well so far, I'm not sure what to think of what's been accomplished, I wouldn't even think about trying to forge a blade to fit BM tolerances unless I had a mill and the skills to use it... I would focus more on the material removal blade if I were you...
if you don't mind me asking is this how you make a living?

the hotter the work is heated the larger the grain,
by working at a lower temperature the grain
will end up finer
