Serious question: What does it matter if the play clock was :00 or not? Yeah it would've been a penalty, but that would've just backed MSU up another 5 yards and improved Bates' QB rating since the TD pass would've been longer. Notre Dame didn't have a clue on that play and it's not like another 5 yards was all of a sudden going to make that play impossible to pull off.
I was at this game and it was wicked I was four rows from the field on the left side of the endzone and was right there for the TD with one of the best view in the house. Everybody was shocked and i think it took about 1 second before everyone realized it was a fake and went wild. After having to put up with the annoying ND band, cheerleaders and leprechaun all game, it was sweet to beat those damn Irish. This was the greatest football game i've ever seen and to be there live - i am so lucky
i see the play clock go to 00 all the time on regular plays and no flag is called. the only reason people are making a big deal about it is because they lost on this play
The refs are not responsible on the play clock on espn, they're responsible on re-directing on if the ball was snapped, and it was a millonth of a second by 0.86 seconds remaining. If the ball wasn't snapped, there will be a flag thrown, but if it was snapped. There will be no flag thrown for a delay of game. MSU barely got it off and won it. So quit complaining and accept your loss!
@lilver04 I've heard a few comments about this, so I looked it up, and the rule states that it is the head ref's job to look up at the play clock from underneath the goal post, and when he sees it turn to zero, he then looks downfield at the play, and if the ball has not been snapped or has not started to be snapped, he will then call delay of game. When he looked, it must have JUST gotten off...
@lilver04 The Big East officials looked at it, it's not a delay of game in essence. There's "lag time" because the ref looks at the clock first then looks at the ball to make sure it's not being snapped. There's always that half second in between. If you notice in other games, the refs do the same thing. It's not anything unusual or a missed call. Notre Dame got beat and they can deal. It's not like they're any stranger to losing.
@lilver04 The Espn play clock is not the official clock, get it right. The Actual clock is what the officials look at and they must re-direct if the ball is snapped before delay of game. If the ball is not snap off before, then their will be a 5 yard loss, if it is snapped. Then no flag should be thrown, bottom line is that Notre Dame didn't execute and Michiag State did. End of Story.
@lilver04 like lettich said, refs have their own play clock that is a tweak behind what you see- ask any football ref- what you see is just to display the relative amt of time left- it actually happens a lot if u look for it on tv, the play getting off when u think its at zero
need the video reaction from the student section cuz we went nuts after that play

delay of game penalty? - so what - they do it again from 5 yards farther away - he was so open he could've ran 50 more yards
0 on the play clock, delay of game = irrelevant - in this case

Just a few hours later, Coach Dantonio suffered from a heart attack and underwent surgery. He's going to be alright, but talk about a wild night!
