Stunning Vulcan video! The temptation to just lift off there must have been immense. In addition to others' comments, I've only heard the howl in flight from certain angles, maybe that's why we don't hear it in the vid?
@NJLanwarne 655 has 300 series engines, these engines dont usually howl. only the 200 series ones howl due to airflow in the airintake (intake narrows to take smaller diameter engine)
@planeboy737 Vulcans with 301 engines "roar", those with 200 series engines "howl". The difference is all to do with intake geometry and air flow rates. They all roar from the jet pipes, but on the 200 series you can also hear the howl from the intakes.
An excellent video from an unusual angle of the most powerful Ground running Vulcan in existence, long may she continue to run. Thanks to all the volunteers who keep her in such excellent condition!
excuse me i beleive the most powerfull vulcan is XH588 that FLYS xm655 does not fly and even if it was the most powerfull it would be a tie between xm655 AND xl426 AT SOUTHEND irport!
@vulcantts excuse me I beleive you are wrong :). All i will say is have a read around about the specs for 655,558 and 426.... I stand by my statement XM655 IS the most powerfull Vulcan still running.
655MaPS keep xm655 in running order,.you are correct she cant fly.
She is often used by the TVOC to provide assistance to the crew and engineers on XH558, and where they can the TVOC help them :)
@XM655bovril, would XM655 ever be able to have one flight with a cat 3 check, or is she too old now?

it looks like she ever so slightly took off at 2:51!
Blackout60800 11 months ago
@Blackout60800 unfortunately she is not allowed to fly, all main wheels stayed firmly on the floor.

I'm not sure if this is related to XM655 having different engines than XH558 but is there a reason why XM655 does not appear to howl?

Explain in detail why this aircraft is not allowed fly? It nearly does so in the video, surely it wouldnt fall apart if it did.
workshop77777 1 year ago
@workshop77777 several tens of millions of pounds. 655 would have to go through all the work 558 has and have 4 new engines made or re-manufactured

@xm655bovril XM655 DOES NOT FLY,DOES IT! so XH558 IS CLEARLY THE MOST POWERFUL IF ALL THE ENGINES WORK AND IT CAN FLY!
vulcantts 1 year ago
@vulcantts here are the numbers.. 558 4 x 201 Series - 17,000 lbf (76 kN)
= 68,0000lf thrust,
655 4 x 301 Series - 20,000 lbf (89 kN) = 80,000 lbf thust
655 uses the more powerfull engine so my statement is still correct :)
I support 558 as much as the next, but feel without 655, it would be more difficult to keep 558 flying
