  • dude it says on the vid 125mph, so who it be 115, makes not sense, also mine was done by turbo technics,so it was faster than standard.

  • Pity they rusted like hell!!!

  • I have always liked the Montegos, whether it be an MG, VandenPlas, 1600 HL or a standard 1300. A very slick and elegant design. The instrument panel and controls were well thought out with everything logically positioned.

I like the way the windscreen wipers remain visible when in use and then disappear below the windowline when switched off. You never see that on cars these days.

  • great cars, only let down by weak build quality ,not enough care to fitting windscreens etc, mine leaked like a sieve, wear on flywheel ring gear till it looked like a boiled egg(put it in gear and rock it to start),still to find a more comfortable car in 2011,breather pipes were always getting gunged up with condensation, which left a trail of white smoke, power hose them did the trick.it was as good a car as any of the time, austin rover spec was good

  • Wonderful tassled brogue shoe shot at 7:11 - probably sourced from his local branch of Freeman Hardy & Willis (Buttermarket Ipswich)

  • I also love this video I keep coming back for more re-plays

  • "A stylish, elegant car". He wasn't referring to the Montego when he said that.

  • Why did this car have EFi? Seems a bit of a retrograde step to have the Turbo revert back to carbs.

They should have done an estate of this though.

  • @lewis72 Australia had it.....but we in the UK didnt.

  • @lewis72 wasn't there not 3 prototypes Mg Montego estate made? or am I wrong

  • @38wd

I really don't know. There's every chance that there was though. So many cars do get made at the prototype stage but don't get any further due to cost/business case/competition with other products etc.

  • yes you are correct there was 3 prototypes made

  • Good looking and fast car for its time, only the Sierra XR4i could compete for power at the time, but even that was not where near as quick 0-60 compared to the Monty... Pity about the Rust and the o-series' propensity to leak and break!

  • I remember wanting one of these when I was 17.

  • Love how he put his helmet down before driving off!

  • Ok cars in there day, i owned a 2 year old montego turbo and it was riddled with faults, dodgy engine, slipping clutche, oil leaks,

  • "We did a lot of the suspension development".

When? The suspension was one of the worst things about this apart from the rust.

  • ...but it's front wheel drive, so why would any racing driver rate it?

  • @lewis72

Yes, because there's never been a competitive FWD car, now has there? What a bizarrely generalising, badly thought out statement, but each to their own.

  • @charlieflint

Competitive to what? High performance cars are RWD or 4WD. You don't see FWD F1 cars, do you? Front wheel drive comprimises steering with traction, so you're more likely to understeer.

  • @lewis72

you missed the sarcasm there, but thanks for playing.

FWD F1 car? not a great argument as it'd be a packaging nightmare so it'd be easier to stick with RWD.

Oh, and I have lost count of the times I remembered seeing RWD drive touring cars getting stuffed by FWD touring cars. Are you going to come out with the old chestnut about the RWD stuff unfairly having to carry lots of additional ballast because 'they're really that good'? now that would make me chuckle.

    Have fun now.

  • @charlieflint

I didn't miss the sarcasm at all but completely forgot about BTCC because I find it dull. I don't know the ins-and-outs of any mass penalty but the bottom line is, getting the front wheels to steer and put down the power is a comprimise.

Older F1 cars had the engine at the front, so a FWD car would have been possible if it were better.

FWD is the preserve of shopping cars and manufacturers that want to build bigger cars on the cheap. Will we ever see a FWD S-Class, XJ or 7er?

  • lol my 1st car!! not many pepole knew what they were and mine was the only one in town.very quick back then but with wheels that size and all that torque i remember it was hard work to keep pointing in a straight line!

  • the early 90s joyriders choice the locks on them were so bad you could open them with a spoon

  • Very nice, and still a quick car even by today's standards.

  • @Paulph04 agreed used to own 1 pity there was no floor stil rolled it at 70mph not good for goin thro hedges

  • They tested these cars! No way! I doubt if they even made a prototype, the car went straight from a nightmare into production.

  • Ah the MG Montego was a good car. Sure it had a few flaws, but it still was good preformance car.

  • Its whats his name from that show!

  • That really helps. :D

  • Ian Ogilvy from the late 70`s "Return Of The Saint"

  • This is pure nostalgia. I owned a Montego Turbo in the 80's and 90's and still mourn its passing. Motor magazine got a true 131mph out of their test car. I always got a buzz out of driving it. Unfortunately a bit of a rust bucket and the day I sent off to the scrapyard I pulled both front wings off with my bare hands and put them in the boot! All this speed and NO SPEED CAMERAS - such fun..

  • Great bit of 80's nostalgia! 0-60 in 7.3 secs is still impressive by todays standards let alone 25 years ago.

  • LOL. You got to love the 80's cheesiness. I had one in the 90's and like has been said, the torque steer was horrendous and the brakes were utter shite LOL. It rotted like no other car i have ever seen too. but with all its faults, i totally loved the thing. Damn shame when an old duffer pulled out on me at a roundabout and ended its life prematurely :-(

  • This was a good car, credit due to Rover for trying. I drove one of these in the early 90's and it set my pants on fire, nothing that size and price actually came close to this.too bad they went out of business...thanks for posting.

  • i had one of these, it was really fast for its time, though it woud thrw you to the left under hard throttle, i also had mine up rated, but the fuel economy was crap after.

took mine to 130mph, no problem, do not know were they got 126mph from, because it was still pulling like a train, by todays standards it is nothing special, but them it was king, and not much could compete, even the golf GTI was not match.

  • @redlands43

...but the speedo would have over-read by some margin at an indicated 130mph.

  • @redlands43 130mph on the speedo is not 130mpg really, 115mph is more like it

  • Steve is a bit of a dry shite.

  • Harsh but true!

  • haha, near the end of the video he talks about the brakes...."servo assisted, ventlated discs up front"......................then a long pause when he realises it has drums on the rear!

  • Haha! I noticed that too!

  • Can't believe how he played down the torque steer. My mate had one of these and it would almost go lock to lock by itself on full throttle if you let it. Quick car though, and especially with a wastegate and carb needle mods. 200 bhp no trouble at all, and these weren't heavy cars.

  • Those two should just get a room!!!!!

  • brilliant cars

  • they developed the suspension!!! look at the body roll!

  • Anyone actually WANT to be in a Montego at 126MPH???????

  • Its still a Montego tho innit? Like a cavalier SRI is still a shitty Cavalier. Wouldnt say no to one new, but nothing to still appriciate in 2009... Surely?

  • The driver could only be named Steve or Wayne ! LMAO !

  • All stuff from BLMC ( whatever ytou want to call it its the same 4 letters 0( CRAP)

Originally built as deck cargo for submarines.Another modern Dinosaur that cost the brit tax payer a fortune

  • Had a 1987 one of these, reg D800POE! Loved it to bits, never had so much fun in a car but then I've never had a car which torque steered so badly either!

Want to know where they got those fuel figures from though! Mine struggled to do 20 mpg but I have a very heavy right foot! Take a spanner to the wastegate actuator & swap the carb needle & these things going like rockets, unfortunately it hits the fuel economy a little and you end up with gallons per mile rather than miles per gallon ;)

  • lol i think its a bit i say old chap this old car of yers is frightfully good fun and ive had a wonderful day with you would you like to take old monty up to the mountaions tonight and have a picnic under the moonlight

  • LMAO! I couldn`t watch it all but that guy was making 'eyes' at the racing driver at the begining XD

  • Ah the great old Monty Turbo, I had a black standard spec turbo a few years ago, and also owned a modified Maestro Turbo running 18psi boost. Vastly underated cars and was always reliable.

  • B614 COV was a fleet of Monty Turbos from B11 to 22COV - with only one white one , most being red or blue.Sadly no cars survived beyond the new century

Earliest known Monty Turbo is B380XFC again not

survived and last fitted with a 1275cc engine :(

  • built a 2 litre turbo twin cam 16v maestro in feburary, full job with forged pistons, uprated intake cam and remapped ECU, that is fantastic fun, i have yet to be seen off any set of traffic lights in it.

I have another engine ready, just need a good clean montego now!

  • Youd be very lucky to find a non rusty monty now mate!

  • i found an MG maestro in spotless condition this time last year, 37k miles - anything is possible

  • Ace not seen that before! Cheers for posting it.

They do respond well with lowering and getting rid of the metric run flat tyres they had from the factory. Some MGF alloys with low profile tyres transform these cars.

  • Hilarious!

"The high speed handling is excellent" says our host as the Montego understeers its way around a corner on its door handles, tyres screaming for mercy!

  • 24 years ago, handling was poor by todays standards - this was a very fast car that handled well in 1984 and they are still well livley now.

  • Bring back the eighties!

  • Seems like the red Monty there has long since kicked the bucket... The vehicle details for B614 COV are: Date of Liability 01 08 1996 Date of First Registration 07 05 1985 Year of Manufacture 1985 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1994CC CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour RED Vehicle Type Approval null
  • just over 11 years on the road so not done bad.

  • I have owned many Montego Turbo's in the past and still own one. Wonderful Car and excellent video

  • Thank you so much for uploading this, i hadn't seen it until now.

    Fucking fantastic!

  • That brings back memories...
