I saw this scene when I was a kid and cried my fuckin' eyes out. To this day when I hear the music signaling artex's demise I immediately skip the part where the horse dies. I even get teary eyed when Atreu pulls on the horse's reigns and it won't come, last time I saw this movie with my cousin we nearly got in a fist fight coz he laughed at me when I starting getting upset when the horses death was coming

I was like yeah right they won't let the horse die this was a children's movie but when the scene faded and Artax wasn't there I was surprised, sad, and more then that messed up just like Atreu was, and when I remember this film even today it was this scene that sticks out like a sore thumb and makes me remember the film.

The horse didn't die. If you watched the making of the film. This was made in a studio. The horse was trained to stay until the water reached her neck. The horse wasn't harmed at all.

@lmmcabe That makes about as much sense as a banana riding a tricycle (To Quote TFS) It's actually quite simple. When travelling on foot and you find a mud pit like that you GO AROUND!!! Simply because not only will it trap your horse, it can trap you. People are found dead in those sink holes all the time!

the horse didn't die for real, it was even offered to "Atreyu" after the movie was made, it was in an interview.

Just a bad rumor. Don't believe it.

the sad thing is that the horse really DID die in real life! the hoist failed...Atreyu first sets out on his quest, his horse Artax is grey with a dark mane and a dark tail, but when they stop to rest and eat by the stream, Artax is now white with a white mane and a white tail. Then, by the end of the film, when Bastian and Falkor fly over Fantasia, they spot Atreyu and Artax and his mane and tail are both dark again.
