I love love love this song. Reading it next to Alice Munroe's "The Beggar Maid" it's like the shattering of that old patriarchal notion of romance, where a man is a man because he rescues a weak and submissive woman. Ani and Munroe both fight against this notion. A woman is so much more than this.

hi. discovered Ani's music a night of 2000 in Killarney, Ireland after a night of "over-evrything"...It was the "living in clip" album. Since, i cant really remember another female singer who impressed me so much. And, she's pretty, no question about that.

It doesnt mean she isnt pretty....im not beefin w/you over your comment...just that SO many people think thats what she means...she means that she doesnt want to be known "just" for being pretty... like alot of shallow, vain, image obsessed pretty people are in the world. Much of society prejudges people based on looks & its no secret that attractive people are treated differently...Ani is saying in her own words "FU i am what i am, take it or leave it". Just 1 of the reasons we love her! ;D

@MamiRox Exactly! When you try to glean meaning from this song, try combining Christina Aguilara's song "Beautiful" with Maya Angelou's poem "Phenomenal Woman" and "No Doubt's song "I'm Just a Girl"... then you might have an idea of what this song is about.

It's from the "So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter" album ... live with a jazz/funk ensemble. All the tracks are live, but it's hard to know which track came from where, b/c it's a combo of venues from the U.S., France, and Canada.

I just wish she would use her talent to sing about more than what she does. I know a lot of artists find there thing and just run with it. But she really has more potential lyricly than what she does. It's almost like her music is more advanced than her lyrics... too bad. Still a good artist though.

She's a really good artist, but she returns constantly to the same themes. It's not good for a singer songwriter.

they always choose the pretty faces over talent, Ani is renowned for being outspoken about the corporate gatekeeper scum.
BTW Ani was offered a contract but refused it and chose to go alone.

You know what, I think the importance in this song is in the words- and the way she sings the song highlights the words, and that's why I love it. Yeah, it's not the classic way to sing, but it's right for her, and for this song.

Hayley FW - I actually admire her creative talent and like many of the postings I've listened to,esp her use of the baritone guitar - I just couldn't get into the gasping on the one song.
