  • Good tutorial, but a little creepy using a little girl jumping on a trampoline with that particular song.

  • Great Tutorial! But creepy when using a young girl as the model with The Girls Gone Wild music playing in the background. LOL!

  • @ThineStatus The funny thing is after all that so many people on here apparently knows where that song is from, isn't it? Now who's being creepy?

  • Love the video's, there always a help, just need to roll a bank to buy all the flashes and wireless toys !

  • the photos look great

  • what's up with the Girls Gone Wild them song????

  • Hi Gavin,

Verry usefull tutorial. Just a little question about the lightning. For the masterlight there is ETTL used. But what settings do you used for the background?

I hope to hear soon! :-)

Just keep up the good work for tutorails. They are the best can found on the web! :-)

    Regards, Sander

  • I really enjoyed this

  • Great videos!

  • great job... idol

  • Another great video. Question about lighting: Is there a difference in lighting quality between shooting a flash through an EZ softbox and shooting it through a white umbrella? Thanks.

  • Hi, I'm from Argentina. my English is not good, sorry, but your videos are very interesting and simple. I am a beginner, and I want to ask you something about this video. because i no have this Pocket Wizard. so how can i take those pictures with a 430EX flash manualy, and my radio triggers like those jianisi pt 04 tm transmiters, without ttl?

  • Hi Gavin, can you tell the speed you used on the flash, and what is the maximum spped that can be used for this particular model? thanks and regards.

  • I love him!

  • Watching you taking photos I note you look like you use the back button for focus, is that right?

  • nice video Gavin, what lens are you using in this please ?

  • woooooow amazing

    i will do it ^___^

then i will show you the result

  • does the pocketwizard tt5 works on nikon d40?if so,do i have to buy both the transceiver & the receiver?

  • the model is very cute. and very nice jobe. thanks for upload

  • welcome, APTA is a screen stretched on paper does not like, tell e how it is thank

  • AMAZING WORK...that was cute!!=)

  • Another great video Gavin thanks again.

  • r@ygold

  • Thanks for taking the time to make these Gavin! Please keep it up!

  • Having video withdrawal Gavin! When will you be uploading another 15 minute challenge or some other video? You must be busy. Either that or winter has slowed your shooting opportunities. How to see more soon. :)

  • Check out my blog, lots going on there. Quick Shots (new weekly video series) starts today!

  • Awesome Gavin...I'll do that! Thanks. :)

  • Heheh you're great

  • you r great .... plz don't stop do these lessons

    thanks

  • Your right Gavin, my mistake. In this example RF was a better way to go.

Interesting to see you are using the Flex5 and Mini TT1. So far, we have found the new Flex system to be very unreliable; with inconsistent ETTL results over 20ft.

Our techs say the problem is down to unwanted RF emitting from our Canon Speedlights, coupled with the very week signals generated by the TT1. We have found replacing the TT1 for a Flex5 gives better performance, but not much. How about you?

  • As allways good video, but why use the flex system? Why not just use the built in radio trigger on your flash which would also give you full ETTL control? For the price of two flex units you could buy a 3rd speedlight.

  • @TALKCalgary Well, Canon doesn't have a built in radio trigger. The 580EX has Infra Red which is great, but that requires line of sight. So the second flash (behind the model) wouldn't trigger.

  • Nice Videos!

I do however think that e-TTL is shooting hot. The background is so bright its wrapping around her in some places. Another factor is that she's also so close to it. The originals probably look better but I just thought I'd point it out.

  • Haha, by the way everyone, watch RIGHT to the end :)

  • Gav

now PAY the girl for with out her you got nothing lol

    another great tutorial

    Dave

  • Gavin can you get sharp fast moving images with Bowens 750pro studio lights? I've heard you can or is this flash setup better? Thanks

  • @global001 Never tried them, but speedlites are super fast (think 1/10000's of sec)

  • Well, this explains why I can't get sharp pictures of movement with my studio flashes =). Love these videos

  • Gavin YoU aRe GrEaT!!! :-D

  • what a poor girl ,, you need to bring some water :) xD

as usuall Mr. Gavin u r always amazing .

    Thanx alot

  • Nice video with useful information. Thanks for taking the time !!

  • Gavin,

Can you tell me the setting of your camera as it relates to main menu?

  • Nicely explained - thanks . Why did you sound more out of breath than your daughter at the end ? :) .

I also enjoyed the 'blooper reel' at the end ;) .

  • nice clip wat is is tt1?

  • Mini TT1 is a radio trigger from Pocket Wizard. It fires the flash even when the flash is off the camera (and attached to another pocket wizard)

  • Another brilliant tutorial from Gavin!

Loved it, and it's great that you got your daughter involved. All my kids are into photography as well. It's great time with "dad". :)

  • You are the best teacher of photography in youtube community ...

thanks for this great video ...

  • Great tutorial, you're really helpful!

  • haha.. great intro! gavin, u are the best haha :D

nice tut. thank u very much.

  • thanks!

  • thanks for the tips your awesome!

  • what lens are you using in this video?

  • this is so cool. I want a flash gun so bad. lol.

  • Your tips and video's are great! Thanks!

  • Gavin.. you ROCK :)

  • now what did you mean by duration? as in the reason you didn't use studio flash is because of duration? did you mean recycling time?

  • @pofrani

Nothing to do with recycling time, the flash from the flashgun lasts a tad longer than studio lights and therefore throws more light onto the subject for longer and allows for a sharper brighter image.

  • buggy831: Not quite right.

Flash duration is a time measure taken from a flash between it reaching 50% of its peak value to the point when it has diminished to the same value.

A shorter flash duration freezes moving objects, a longer flash duration causes them to blur.

  • Thanks for this awesome tip. I never do studio work, but I guess it will come in handy when I do branch into studio work.

  • "your not actually recording this are you?" LMAO!!!! so funny great vid mate

  • Sounds like the "Girls Gone Wild" theme song?

  • @danelovell I've done work for GGW. I'm almost 100% sure it is the theme song... However, I'm a HoeyHead, a Gavin follower if you will. I've liked all his videos thus far. I'm a pro photographer (meaning I get paid a few times a week to shoot models) and still I find his tutorials helpful and informative. That being said... I'll still watch his videos... even thought that song is a bit creepy in this video. LOL. But otherwise good work as always Gav.

  • @danelovell Yea I thought the same thing. Made me wonder about him for a sec. LOL

  • To anyone that responds, I like Gav as well. I am also a professional in the photography world and photoshop. He's really informative and it's nice to see some one share such knowlege. Maybe they don't have Girls Gone Wild in Europe or maybe be doesn't know what it is.

  • I'm in London too but have no idea what Girls Gone Wild is. Please enlighten me.

  • Gavin, you look like you're having fun making these videos and that makes it fun to watch. Your model is growing like a weed since your last video you made on shooting white backgrounds.

Question: how reliable are you finding those mini PWs to be?

  • The PW's have been pretty good as long as they have fully charged batteries.

I updated the firmware right before this video and they performed a lot better!

Yep, she's growing up really fast!

  • you are great!!!!!!

  • thanks Gavin that was helpful

  • thanks!

  • Always informative and fun.

  • Thank you for taking the time to produce these fun, informative and interesting vid clips for snappers everywhere. Its very much appreciated.

  • best tutorials on the web!

  • :) cute!

  • nice!

  • Is that your daughter?

  • :D thanx Gavin!

  • Always great

  • Will there be the same effect if u put LIGHT (like a lamp) on that white background, instead of FLASH (from mini TT) ?

  • No really bright enough, unless you can get your hand on a a light that's1000's of Watts.

  • Gavin you do not say what you set the back flash to is it set to be + something? if so as I gues it must be by how much?

I can not see it can be set in manual with the other one being TTL

  • There's more detail on my blog about taht. The link is in the video info panel.

  • Hello Gavin, i want to be a photographer when i grown up and i was wondering how do I know what is a very good camera, besides knowing the mega pixels, model, and style

  • Lots of good cameras around today. Choose one you can afford / upgrade. If your friends/family have one brand buy that so you can swap gear.

Honestly, the camera you own is a lot less important then learning to see photos around you.

  • I'm not in photographing things, but your video's are always interesting. You should request to be a youtube partner because your tutorials are great :-)

  • where are you from? Great tutorials!

  • Awesome as always Gavin. Funny ending!!

  • awesome

  • Hi Gavin, great vid as usual.. question - are you using AF-S or AF-C focusing mode? As I'm always confused if using a flash would make a difference to which mode to choose (I'm using a Nikon, so I apologise if its not the same terminology)

  • AF-S (if that's single focus). AF-C (continuous focus) works great when the subjects are moving towards or away from you, AF-S is fine when the subject distance doesn't alter (like most of the shots I took here)

  • brilliant as usual hoey!

  • You make me laugh at the end Gavin!

  • hi gavin one question .what are the setting on camera iso raw or jpg for flash . because my pictures always llok kind of red .

  • All the technical details are on the info panel next to the video.

  • does the same concept apply when shooting fast action sports like greyhounds or hockey etc?

    thanks

  • Sort of. If flash is the ONLY source of light this will work. If you're tring to capture ambient light then think high ISO.

  • Hi Gavin, have Canon brought out a firmware update for the 40D which allows hi-speed synch with the speedlights? I got new firmware for my 50D which allowed the flash to synch at 1/500th. cheers

  • As far as i know the 40D has always been able to use High Speed sync with Canon Speedlites. Mine does.

High speed sync wouldn't have helped here as HS is multiple burst of light which could cause blur.

BTW the Pocket Wizard flash triggers are also High Speed Sync compatible meaning you can sync them at 1/1000 sec if you want.
