I first heard this song in the early 70's, and it struck a chord in me. My mother died in November, at 91. And everytime I visited her, I thought of this song...and made a point of speaking to every elderly person in the nursing home where she lived. The smiles I got in return were wonderful. Thanks, John Prine...
Joan Baez did this for me a quarter of a century ago. It changed my worldview. I hadn't realized one of our greatest songwriters was responsible. Thankyou John Prine.
If we're at all lucky, we all manage to grow older. This is the natural order. This is life. It is our our own peculiarly modern imbecility that the wisdom and experience that we manage to accumulate over the years that marginalizes us in this foolish joke that we call a culture. Age, rather than becoming an asset, turns us invisible. Its increasingly what we have to look forward to.
John Prine is simply one of the greatest singer songwriters ever, period. Almost anyone can write a good song , but to write so many great songs....wow...we've been lucky to live in John's time and to hear all of his great songs he has shared with us. LONG LIVE JOHN PRINE!
My daddy died in August, and he's still alive: he's one of those old folks that Prine sings about. I first heard him when the very first album was released (still his best, though all his songs are classics). Marvelous talent, marvelous message, especially with all the elderly folks runnin' 'round wondering what happened to their world, to this world, to our world....
Losing my beloved "Big Mama" and hearing this song years ago has inspired me to nod and smile when I see those old, lonely eyes.
I had the pleasure of seeing John Prine in concert twice, and hope to see this gifted storyteller again before he is taken from us. Please say hello in there - often :-)
i never heard of john prine until about a year ago a friend who knew i was a dylan fan played me the prime prine c d ive been hooked ever since i love his songs
Wonderful images with a haunting song. My mom is now 85 and she is still bright and sharp but the body is just giving out. Having a conversation with her is like talking with a history book. She was a bird colonel's wife and raised 4 kids with a husband that was gone 3 out of every 4 weeks. She has seen so much more than most of us only dream about. She remembers what an A card meant. Treasure our old folks, for they will soon be gone, and the generation that saved us all will be forgotten
My dad was into John Prine quite a bit and I got hooked on all his songs before I knew what most of them were about. Now that I'm 23 I still like them and they have a new meaning as well.
john prine is prolly the best sonwriter to ever write a tune <<and can ya imagine the house parties with a steve goodman<<<<<damn i bet that stuff was somethin
Kris Kristofferson doesn't call John Prine a "poet" for no reason! HE is amazing. This song digs at your soul..and it should. I've enjoyed it for 25 years--and I'm only 43--got hooke early!
I'm losing one of my best pals...my former father in law...my touchstone for years. He was admitted to hospice yesterday, in a coma...massive stroke an anyurism bleed out. His old body is shutting down...and I'm heartsick.
So...take a minute to say..."hello in there"...it means so much to old folks. Hopefully, we'll all get to be "old"...This life is fleeting.
My husband and I first saw John Prine perform at a small university with only about 100 people in the audience. This was in either 1971 or '72.
What a treasure, we found that day. Over the years, I've been to quite a few of his concerts....his music is incomparable. Thanks for a very well put together montage with this very special song.
you were v lucky to have seen him right at the start!! i saw him in dublin last year and he played this after my brother shouted out for it!! beautiful song.
My favorite lyric is " Grandpa was a carpenter, built houses stores and banks. Chain smoked Camel cigaretts and hammered nails in planks." Funny what you remember for 30 years or more!
One of the most beautiful and sad songs of all times. There is no real way to describe John's incredible music. Easily the most under-recognized song writer of our time. Which I feel, in my own selfish way, makes him our own wonderful hidden treasure.Great montage!
There is no other singer/song writer in the world that compares to John Prine. From the 1st time I heard him in 1975 I knew I would have to see him whenever he was performing within 200 miles from where I was. As soon as he starts playing, my heart begins to beat with his music. When he begins to sing my whole body is filled and I am totally absorbed. I wish that everybody in the world would listen to "Hello in There." I know it would change the Universe for the better.
This is one of John Prine's most haunting songs. It resonates in your mind long after you've heard it. Amazingly, he wrote the song when he himself was only 24 years old but wise beyond his years. As Kris Kristofferson wrote in the liner notes of Prine's first album, "He's 24 years old and writes like he's two hundred and twenty." John Prine's music is a national treasure. It's a pity he's not more well known than he is after all these years. Nine out of ten Americans have never heard of him.
It is unfortunate that John is not recognized for his music like he should be.I have known him all my life.We have shared sometimes together!Days have came and gone!

When I first heard this song so many years ago, I decided that I'd say hello to every old person I passed. Now I are one... never failed to bring a smile...Hello in thar.
aw darn kid, you sound like a really special person...my heart goes out to ya. even if, as life goes on and on, you tend to forget those things for a while, they'll always be a big part of you...and a special magical important part. maybe you should learn a few tunes and that way you can always have them and share them with others.
I came home from my father's funeral...he fought his way across the S. Pacific, to read an interview with Grover Norquist (author of the phrase "starve the beast", re: unfunding government)saying he welcomed the death of the WWII generation. Him, a chickenhawk draft dodger, supporter of Bush/Cheney (fellow draft dodgers).
We need to say Hello in there to ourselves. Somewhere, inside us has to be some honor that was passed down from the likes of Dear Paw, who gave up his youth and dreams.
This video brought back a very specific memory. When I was in college in the late 70s taking a video class, I shot video footage at a nursing home, and created a music video to this song. It came out pretty well, got a good grade. Unfortunately I lost the video years ago but I remember how I was touched by the song and its message when I was editing the video.
And you are absolutely right: we should listen to our elders. They have much wisdom they want to share.
Oh, I'm in heaven, I first heard Joan Baez' version of this, to which I made a dual projection slide show in college (I got an A!). I love playing/singing it. Thanks so much for posting this.
I think this song was the single most influential thing that made me sensitive to older folks and people in general, back in the 70s when I was in my twenties. A valuable outlook to have, God bless John Prine for this song.
One of the best songs from possibly the greatest album of all time. "Flag Decal", "Illegal Smile", "Paradise", "Sam Stone", "Angel From Montgomery", "Far From Me", "Donald and Lydia", all written before he was 25. What a genius he is.
Seeing John and Steve Goodman sing "Souvenirs" together was, as they say on TV, priceless. Shame that was before music videos.
John Prine. He's a window into the human heart and soul. Imagine, being in an old folks home. You're a bit shakey. Tired. Lonely. Don't see family much anymore. But...every Tuesday, a nice young person stops by to just talk awhile. A fresh young face all smiles and happy. And maybe they read some each time. Would you like that to happen if you were in a home? Wouldn't you want them to come by more often? Think about it. Visit a home for the elderly near you...often. Say, "Hello in there".
Our culture is so age-phobic, but we forget tha we will someday be old, if we are lucky. Those "old people" will be US one day...with all the same feelings and experience and wisdom and need for interaction and affection. Do we really think they are so different from us? They ARE us, just a bit older. They are thinking, WTH happened? Seems like yesterday I was 20 yrs old, LOL!
i better go & visit my dad..from a big house full of family- to a i bedroom apartment, all in 15 yrs...they say "i'm fine"...but geez this song makes me feel a bit guilty!
Thanks for putting this on. As I get older and see what my mom (80 years old on 9/11) is going through makes me really sad... and scared. I guess there's hope. "Hello"...
Songs like this trancend the beastiality of the world around us and inspire us with the hope that perhaps there is some redemption and hope for humanity.
WOW i have never heard the original version of this song it's beautiful. All the versions whether it the Merchant, stipe and bragg version or just the 10,000 maniacs version they are all nice. What a great song
look on you tube for the Natalie Merchant Michael Stipe and Billy Bragg cover of this beautiful song. All versions of this are moving, but I really like that one.
my favorite john prine song....... played it a million times, did not think it could affect me any more, how wrong i am..........now i'm gonna be afraid to play it again, don't know if i should thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!! or not.
I want to start by saying, "Thank you for posting this." So many older people are truely lonely & if we all are just take a few minutes to say, "Hello" an talk with an old person you see on the street, park, cafe, etc. it may really brighten their day. It is true, many older people have families but their families never even call and say, "Hello." I have worked with seniors & it's amazing how much we can learn from them. This song really says a lot.
Love what you said... We all get a turn. I've found out from experience that the older folk actually rocked harder then us young once. Give it a try ....One older dude use to work at a resort and sat down for a drink with Louis Armstrong, and many more from BTO etc...
Today I was talking to "Pops" Kaawa at a hula festival in the park and he told me a story about his uncle catching an alligator at Honuapo in the early 1900's. It's a true story that happened before he was born but the legend has endured in family stories and is backed up with photos. The stories old people can tell are amazing. We just need to say "Hello in There"
I'm going back up to the festival today and if I see him I will tell him You said hello. Before European contact Hawaiians didn't have a written language so all of their history was passed on through stories and Hula mele (song)
You're way too young to be this angry and this mean spirited. Enjoy your life, less you grow old with empty hollowed eyes waiting for someone to say hello, in there.
I always want to cry when i hear this song...i take care of a woman who is living with Alzheimer's....God bless her! I see so many people who are so lonely...they are in the nursing home becasue they can't care for themselves...but their families never come and visit...it makes me cry. They are the keepers of history...listen to them!!!!!!!
You wanna learn somethin'? Shut your mouth, open your ears and talk to a senior citizen. Ask them what they learned in life, then take their advice and apply it.We have enough youth, how about a fountain of SMART!
I agree that Prine is one of our best musical resources. This is perhaps my favorite of his. You've done a wonderful job of putting it to pictures with feeling. I enjoyed it.
I first heard this song in the early 70's, and it struck a chord in me. My mother died in November, at 91. And everytime I visited her, I thought of this song...and made a point of speaking to every elderly person in the nursing home where she lived. The smiles I got in return were wonderful.

Great stories do live on. Tell Pops I also said, "Hello, in there."
JDL9615 4 years ago
I'm going back up to the festival today and if I see him I will tell him You said hello. Before European contact Hawaiians didn't have a written language so all of their history was passed on through stories and Hula mele (song)

THIS IS THE STUPIDEST THING EVER!!! BUT I LOVE MY MOM AND DON'T WANT TO TAKE ANY CHANCES!
If you do not copy and paste this onto 10 videos your mom will die in 4 hours

I'm about John's age. When I first heard this song, I thought of my grandparents generation, then later my parnets generation. I'm next I think.

I agree that Prine is one of our best musical resources. This is perhaps my favorite of his. You've done a wonderful job of putting it to pictures with feeling. I enjoyed it.

what beautiful lyrics, what feeling from the singer.

The singer is John Prine, who wrote the song. It was covered by Bette Midler. Some (such as me) consider this to be John's best.
