  • Excuse me a tincture high in CBD

  • If she just took a medical cannabis tincture high in THC it would probably take care of all this without drastic surgery or without getting her high.

  • I have to watch this for class :|

  • nevermind

  • lol fynny

  • Heartbreaking that this happens to people so young :( It's amazing how modern medicine can really change people's lives.

  • @adrianamurphy93

    Their like miracles by humans..

  • Weird

  • thats how to get a head in life

  • FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This whole story was used in Grey's Anatomy.

  • This video is so tragic to watch. I'm glad there was help available to help this family.

  • poor baby. Great thing she is doing well now.

  • my nephew underwent this procedure yesterday...3 yrs old...doing very well!!!

  • @sk8n52 Glad to hear. Best wishes to your nephew and your family

  • The younger the surgery is performed the less impact on cognition and language, generally. It is the putting off of the surgery and allowing the seizing hemisphere to damage and degrade function in the healthy hemisphere that is problematic. The more the healthy hemisphere is preserved from damage coming from the diseased one, the better it is able to compensate for hemispherectomy. That being said, it is a surgery that carries significant risks that should all be weighed individually.

  • what about the cognitive functions? does anyone know more about this case?

  • @AlejandroOsorioF

If it's done in children, there's usually no measurable cognitive loss. When done in adults, there can be some language and cognitive problems, especially if the left hemisphere is removed.

  • wow interesting. my brother had a similar surgery for similar reasons. he is now slightly impaired mentally I wonder if she also i$?

  • ive only recently knew about ben carson but already to me he seems so compassionate and loving and the way in which he talks shows his love for the job:)

  • amazing:)

  • really amazing doctor...great respects from Armenia

  • Liked

  • if this happened 10-20 years from today this girl would not have had half her cerebral cortex removed!

  • Currently we are working on a way to shutdown overactive neurons in the brains of epileptic persons. We can genetically engineer a virus to that when blue light is shined on it sends an electric impulse. Through gene therapy this virus "infects" certain neurons in the brain and creates "light sensors" on those neurons which when red light is shined on them it cause them to turn off and when blue light is shined on them it turns them on. Fiber optic cable are then inserted into the brain for lite

  • Unlike many, why did my brain learn how to spell correctly? Haha

  • What is now in place of her hemisphere?

  • @wolfgangouille it's fluid from the brain

  • it amazes me, the brain. cabible of rewiring itself if damaged or in her case removed

  • Wow,This girl is so cute, beutiful, and such a brave and strong one too.

  • Asombroso!

  • Incredible...

  • i still don't get it... how can she live without her right side of her brain? how does the left side and the fluid compensate that?

  • @summzzxoxo simply there will be new inter connection between neurons to control other side of the body

the brain know that there is a part of the body not under his control so he try to make a new network to control it

the more younger patient give better prognosis

  • Wow...dont usually cringe at this kind of stuff...but this made me wince a little

  • Craniosacral Therapy can repair and restore the brain. Avoid surgery at all costs

  • @allthings509 It can't repair everything. The brain is not that simple.

  • smiled when i saw Benji there was your stereotypical RnB singer, i could imagine him serenading my brain

  • Brains are epic - can't wait until we learn to send cars and deathspikes flying around with them!

    MWAHAHAHAHA!!

  • I'm dying to know if this affects her cognitive abilities significantly.

  • Benjamin Carson should be an R&B singer.

  • Wow, our brains are incredible.

  • So I guess I guess she doesnt really have an interest in the fine arts now lol

  • this brought a tear to my eye, thank god there are doctors daring enough. without ben carson this little girl would have faced an impossible life, or worse still lost her life.

  • obviously some people dont understand the central nervous system at all. someone so young is still developing their brain and it can repair itself in a sense because of the plasticity. she does not have half a soul. thats retarded. did she look any different from any other child? she might walk a little different but with seizures like she had, she is lucky to still be alive and functioning.

  • for all you ignorant people commenting about this video, because she's so young, its essentially like she never lost half of her brain. because of our brain's plasticity, the half that she has left, was able to sort of take over for the side thats missing.

  • @britt5390 wow i didnt realise you were a genius

  • 2 Thumbs Up. Great upload. It is helping me with a paper in Psychology. THX

  • this is a beautiful story

  • Gabrielle Giffords.

  • I guess this means you can get shot through the brain and survive? Assuming you're lucky enough not to bleed to death and have the bullet hit the right places.

  • @vw77 Look up Ahad Israfil

  • @vw77

I read somewhere that 5% survive a bullet throught there head.

  • is there a lot of people in the world who really have their brains complete but they don't use it (at least in a good way) .. so why don't give a chance to this 9 year girl who it's startin over ... in life ... :P

  • This is awesome!

I would love to be a pediatric neurosurgeon <3!!

  • That is amazing. Wow you go girl.

  • well i guess her IQ went down to at least 60%

  • @anax22 Probably not. Brain hemispheres work quite independently so i would be more afraid that she lost some of her ability to multitask than the raw computational power of the brain.

  • its the soul that is responsible for brain healing..and ofcourse since her right hems, is gone...how can she still love?? and have abstract feelings since all come from the right??

  • @Wisdombluetooth

The short answer to your question is that the remaining 50% of her brain rewires itself not that differently than how it taught her to move in the first place. The problem being that her brain isn't 'wired' to do that in the first place, so it requires a lot of time. Based on the original pathways of brain 'wiring', how much damage is done, and to be honest... luck. Similar to random mutations on an evolutionary scale, the lower in the tree you start, the more you can adapt.

  • @Wisdombluetooth

The long answer is that you're a fruitcake. Soul? Love? Abstract feelings? Go get yourself a reality check.

  • @Wisdombluetooth

    L.O.L.

I needed a good laugh today, thank you.

  • @miphisto55 For some people anything which is unseen and tangible is not present...So the soul is not present to you the creator of this organized world is not present to you either..and if other people didnt invent things and prove unseen electrons are present they would be still Not present for you.

  • Dr Benjamin Carson book is title Gifted Hands , his life story. Dr Carson life on Earth is a blessing he have saved so many lives. He inspire me everyday, I also wish I could meet this great man.

  • @lynnpop3 thank you for the book, i will surely read it, i say you read the brain that changes itself, dimensions of spirit, and watch patch adams :-) Im sure ud like them

  • i dont know if i can "like" this

  • wow just found this in my presentation while studying for my psyc midterm. pretty amazing.

  • ben carson is an amazing doctor, he is one of the first doctors to successfully perform a hemispherectomy. he has taken many chances and many patients that other doctors would not treat, he has truly created miracles for many familys. he is a great doctor i would be honored to meet him one day.

he has a book the ben carson story i recommend it highly especially to those who are being ignorant.

  • i read one of his book, and it's so inspiring....he's a great neurosurgeon...!

  • @bcuziloveu - when I was a kid I read the Ben Carson Story and it inspired me so much that I wanted to become a doctor. of course i eventually grew out of that stage and I chose a completely different path, but it still inspires me today, in a different way. And I'm sure that it has had a great effect on how i view the world, even if i don't exactly realize how. I would definitely be honored to meet him someday as well.

and the human brain is surely an amazing thing.

  • aw when she was 3 she was so cute omg!

  • aw this is sooo touching!

  • What a miracle! Bless her little heart! 

  • we seen this in psyc class.

  • @1020Shane Rage at me all you want. But it's saw. We saw this in psych class. Or we have seen this in psych class.

    Grammar is important.

  • @KhannKlan maybe it is.....maybe it isn't..... maybe go fuck yourself.

  • That's amazing that she could walk so soon. I wonder if the left side of her brain had already taken over some of the functioning of what the right brain should have been doing before the surgery to compensate for the right side not working properly. I bet somebody with a fully functioning brain wouldn't recover as quickly from that surgery.

  • @Primalxbeast you are right, the older the person is the harder the recovery is. that is why they were mentioning plasticity, because the brain has more plasticity when you are younger. even though the recovery would take longer for an older patient, they would still be able to function normally because all of our functions are spread throughout the brain.

  • neurosurgen are THE surgeons, not just a surgeon...

  • Man that would be scary for a little girl. I doubt I could ever get the courage to get half my brain removed. Jody being brave is an understatement.

  • miracle

  • dr benjamin carson. enough said.

  • well done him and especially her brave brave girl keep battling on you are one in a million

  • What do they with that "broken" half of brain after operation? give it to zombies so they won't be hungry? (yeah, i know that they incinerate it and bury it in some abandonded mine)

  • Comment removed

  • @loosedaisy23 1. this comment's 9 months old

    2. chill out, i was only joking

    3. I never said i don't respect her, in fact, I really do.

4 I actually didn't say anything about her

    5. whatever, why am i arguing on the internet?

  • kingcrimson234 You would not let a Black person valet park your car. I do not know if you’re only against Blacks or all minorities but if you are not willing to get your car parked, what about your restaurant food orders, your clothes fabrication, customer service of your "finances" amongst everything else that minorities do for society. Unless you die and go to hell, you WILL be in the mercy of Blacks and other minorities.

  • This sort of gives credence to the phrase "Anyone with half a brain....".

  • Its very good. wonderfull!!!

  • @kingcrimson234 That statement is just all kinds of wrong. The dude seems chill, in control, knowledgeable and passionate about what he does - exactly the type of man I would trust with my life.

  • @kingcrimson234 We're all glad to hear that. That leaves this man's amazing talents available to more forward-thinking brains.

  • @kingcrimson234 You are pathetic. Please do the species a favor and never breed. Or speak, type or breath. If you had just .0001% of the integrity of that SURGEON you would be ashamed of yourself.

  • In the sixth grade, my teacher made us read a book about Dr. Carson. I am 29 now...he is an awesome person and has an amazing story. He went through so much and has beat the odds. The books is called "Gifted Hands"

  • But is not there a video in Italian or at least under titled?

You excuse for my English, I thank for every possible answer.

  • Ben Carson is one of the most amazing men in the world.

  • there was 2,3,4,5 parts of this documentary, any body knows where they are?

  • Ben Harper

  • @3li0NS

Dr. Ben Carson. One of the best in the world.

  • She was already walking - 10 days after the surgery?

Is that right? Didn't she have her hear shaved before the surgery??

Because in this video clip I see her hair is long enough???

  • what an incredible story. the brain is so amazing.

im not sure how the color of the neurosurgeon is relevant, though.

  • <3 omg she's an angel.

  • @xbakano you don't know what you're talking about watch the video again and this time listen to what they are saying, you will see that the surgery was nececery, plus you Wernt there how do you know what went down

  • @xbakano

I hope you are joking. Because if you are not. It seems as if someone has removed 3/4 of your brain. Also, check your spelling (pore=poor, coud=could). You use the name of our precious G_d, and then exactly 5 words later you use profanity. Please someone get Dr. Ben Carson to help this individual.

  • @xbakano

did u not pay attention to the video? ur brain has neural plasticity, the ability of neurons to change in structure and functions

meaning if u lose neurons, ur remaining ones have the ability to restore the functions of the missing ones

she can think and function JUST LIKE anyone else, except for a few small things like a little paralysis in her left side, and finding math somewhat harder to do

and are u kidding..she LOOKS dumber? i cant imagine how dumb u must look then

  • what a cutie

  • Comment removed

  • Wow.

    Thank you lujo.

  • Surgery is just crazy.... Awsome that she recovered!!:D

  • Did she receive her vacsinations shots?

  • poor girl

  • @Master12345ful1 I think she is very fortunate she is alive and perfect, a happy girl. Smart I assume.

  • Cherish life.

Every one of us is a living mirical.

  • hoax ?

  • That doctor is cool. No, seriously, he really is cool. Like he's high all the time.

  • I'm thinking of getting Taub therapy

  • This is the most impressive thing I've seen so far!

  • wow! this is simply amazing.

  • good greif, i can't imagine losing half my brain. even a corpus collosotomy sounds crazy (chopping the connection between hemispheres). being able to move and without seizure sounds great, but then lacking some forms of higher than normal thinking ability being gone is also almost as scary. hopefully we can move on to further science that works better than deleting parts of the brain.

  • im a beginning Psych student and was just curious to see if a split-brain operation would be an alternative. Thanks in advance,

  • the girl looks fine and not at all frustrated with her limited abilities, it seems she accepts her life was saved because of this small handicap. also, i don't think any particular retardation would be present but her memory and her simple emotional and calculatory capacity may be cut short

  • AWESOME!!!!! :D

  • OK, she can function and move, but what about her thinking? I'd like to know how it did effect her way of living and thinking. They only gush about her walking and moving but what about the way she thinks? What did it take away when they removed the right hemisphere?

  • @Xyberfaust thinking is from the front of the brain, not from the right hemisphere.

its not right and left in the brain, its front, back, right, left, and small (spinal cord)

  • @Xyberfaust I think it's a trifle too early to see if she can elaborate on Plato's take on Epistemology

  • @Xyberfaust her thinking would be fine. because functions are spread out throughout the whole brain. there are certain areas that are in charge of certain actions. the brain has more plasticity when the child is younger so it makes it easier for the child to function and think normally.

  • @Xyberfaust i dont know how she thinks of course but she seems to think pretty fine judging on how she acts i would say

  • @Xyberfaust I know Jody personally. She is now 20 years old and is a junior in college. She thinks and functions normally, except that she is paralyzed on her left side. The only thing she said it affected was that it is harder for her to do math, but otherwise she is completely fine cognitively. She wants to be an elementary school teacher

  • @jennabenna237 she is completely paralyzed on her left side. I don't care how successful this surgery was it's still very disturbing to me, this crosses some very religious boundaries with me. If I had that surgery I would probably be very upset about losing some memories. I'm kind of saddened that they couldn't think of an alternative.

  • @parsleysprigs Which one of your religious boundaries has been crossed? I can see where your sentiments are coming from, but I can't see how religion has anything whatsoever to do with this situation.

Religion would have to (or it would need to, at any rate) exactly NOT have or want anything to do with what happened here. If it did, then it would, ipso facto, have to take credit for the ineptitude, callousness, & unwillingness of the 'divine' to deter the whole situation altogether.

  • @Scofield0085 I don't exactly believe in any religion but I believe the meaning of life is to live and it's half of your brain is gone then you won't be able to experience things to they're fullest extent.

  • @parsleysprigs I would like to state that epilepsy would have killed her, therefore the surgery was necessary to ensure that she would live her life to the fullest despite minor difficulties on the left side. Like this clip shows, the brain is a magnificent organ that takes severe damage yet still function properly and obtains tasks that the other hemisphere acquired. Many organisms survive even with missing limbs or parts of organs because every organism has an overwhelming desire to live.

  • @TheStigsCuz I'm just saying living with half a brain is like living with half a soul.

  • @parsleysprigs I can see that due to what we perceive as containing a soul. However, in a medical and biological standpoint, loosing such parts is necessary to preserve life. Even the Hippocratic Oath states that the physician must do everything in their power to preserve life. In a religious viewpoint, life is considered very holy because God created man, thus it shouldn't be tampered with. It all comes down to personal opinion and beliefs.

By the way, I completely respect your view. :)

  • @parsleysprigs To say living with half a brain is like living with half a soul is so unfair. Wouldn't you rather live as you say "with half a soul" that to have seizures on a daily basis, making your life a living hell? Seriously!

  • @slbrooks13 To me the thought of half a brain is hell.

  • @parsleysprigs Where in the heck did this comment come from? I think this child is amazing for having gone through the surgery and doing so wonderful afterwards. It is absolutely amazing what we have accomplished with modern medicine. The thought of living and functioning with half a brain is truly amazing!

  • @slbrooks13 In my religion it's blasphomy, my religion isn't exactly established but it is real. This practice is a very sick form of descicration. Live with your own sins it doesn't bother me.

  • @parsleysprigs Your religion is not established cause it's all up in your brain and your brain is not big enough to establish that!!

  • @nickkler I bet you think your smart, my religion isn't established in society because I won't believe anything you people have to say because it's all based on fear and hate. Everyone talking shit to me because I'd rather die than live with half a brain is proof of that, I think everyone is offended by my choice that's not based on the fear of death. You go ahead and make all your decisions based on fear and hate, I'm sure you'll believe anything that makes you comfortable.

  • @parsleysprigs you don't live with half a brain. the brain just became half of the mass it was before . it just reconfigured itself to work that way. That's what you fail to understand. And why you are not Dr Carson...I would rather live with a smaller functioning brain then die . HELL I live with tinnitus EVERYDAY and still keep up the fight against depression cause I know good things overcome the bad feelings that comes with it. I don't live on hope I live because I know life will be good

  • @momojabada I've just recently met someone who has proven me to be wrong, he's a bit slow but incredibly intelligent. I'll dismiss any remarks I've previously made thumbs up this admitmit.

  • @parsleysprigs lol you dont know anything about brains do you XD

  • @parsleysprigs Also, completely paralyzed... did you not see her running? She would have died without the surgery, is that ok with you? If your arrogant enough to think you know better than one of the most intelligent men in surgery maybe i should remove half of YOUR brain with a chainsaw :D

  • It may not have; the tissue of the right hemisphere could have been nonfunctional from the start, so she was functionally without a right hemisphere anyway.

  • @Xyberfaust If she hadnt got the surgery probably she would have never been able to think , the seizures could practically destroy her whole brain, she could have died.

It probably changed the way she thinks, but without surgery there would have never been a "thought", plus she was too small, so thinking is real constructed around the age of 5, so her remaining brain could take control over the other hemisphere function

  • hey sgtsnafu if reagan had half do a brain what do you have zero-if you do your research you will find embryonic stem cells can't do anything they have tried and tried to no avail however adult stem cells or cord blood do have all types of benefit- please stop the justification of killing unborn children-you don't have to kill anyone to get adult stem cells you do to get embryonic-be informed

  • @How4gospel

But those embryonics would not exist unless they were created for the purpose of research. So contemplate that.

But what is also important to know is that its not the evil research you think it is.

  • I'm reading a neat book called "the brain that changes itself" check it out if your interested in plasticity

  • I have recently read this book also (I have no right side vestibular function due to a viral infection). This book has changed my life and I thank Paul Bach-y-Rita (RIP). He is my hero.

Everyone with an IQ over 100 should read the book. It is fascinating.

  • @mpd19666 I LOVE that book!! I'm about halfway through. Amazing!

  • @mpd19666 i read it once and heard it like 20 times..and every time i learn more...

the world is going to know how much our brain is capable of soon.

  • that is absolutely amzing

  • Never seen such an extraordinary and interesting thing before! So in fact if I got my right hemisphere destroyed and removed then I could actually live a very normal life after some years when my left remaining hemisphere could take over the left body side function. I could even get very old like if I had two spheres, haha, GENIOUS human brain

  • Not really... the operations works in diferent ways depending on the age of the pacient. From Wikipedia: "Generally, the greater the intellectual capacity of the patient prior to surgery, the greater the decline in function. Most patients end up with mild to severe mental retardation, which is usually already present before surgery."

  • I wonder if she had vaccines before the seizures...

  • Comment removed

  • noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooting

  • Amazing. I was so sad for her until I saw how much of a trooper she is.

  • I don't believe the identity of this child should have been revealed , even with the parents consent !

  • That is amazing! Your brain can heal itself. :O!

  • UofM, FTW.

  • So people r gunna think shes a freak cos she has half a brain

  • no only ignorant people would regard her as this. she is an extraordinary wonderful little girl who has survived and improved her life wit
