@UPPERCASENOSPACE right!! coming from the guy who can barely wheelie LOL I have much respect for the riders and there equipment believe me , I just think the bikes look funny yes I know why they look like that. function over form give me a break nooby.
I don't see what my video about me learning how to clutch wheelie has to do with this but whatever, maybe you should share your awesome riding skills with everybody by putting up a video. I just thought calling Dakar bikes "gay" was ridiculous.
Long story short, the French ASO announced that 450cc was the limit in engine size for Dakar. KTM responded with..."Screw you guys. I'm going home.".
KTM runs only 650cc in Dakar and had already their team bikes build and 50 other private customers bike build for the 2010 Dakar. But now they can't race because of the 450cc limit and lost a lot of money. So naturally they are pissed. A 450cc is to small for Dakar I personally think. I just hope KTM comes back for 2011. They do make a 450 exc.
ktm have retired form the dakar now, because they changed the sub 550 class and ktm thought it was aimed to release the monopoly they have on the rally.
V-strom is a trail bike not for desert racing. Drz400 is more like it altough the adequate choice would be like a ktm690 enduro or a Honda xr650r which are Desert racing Bikes
V-twins must be 450cc or smaller in the Dakar rules :(
the poor old Dr650 would not handle the power needed for the race it would last the distance but you need the power to win....and the team to rebuild the engine every night
well im going on 17 and have been riding 4 sum time i ride a yzf250 and am startin racing in april, we can get the heavy duty parts from touratech e.g frame and engine pimp what u ride m8

hehhehehe......been training for this event....but still gotto have the dough first....i'm not the fit yet....maybe we'll see each other in the next 3 years....january is not far off and paris dakar 2008 will start yippee
Dakar on a GS1200, sure ! if we can strengthen the frame enough and gucci it up a bit we're a sure win. How long you been riding? if so wat do you ride?
hehe, I know the feeling. It's one of my aims in life to compete in it, probably in a car or truck. No expectation of scoring points, I'd be over the moon if I'd actually got to the competition. Like you I have everything apart from the money, skill, fitness, vehicle, etc, etc. Still these things can be achieved. Good luck!!
i love this bikes with the high front, they look awesome

Finally KTM can take the start with his 690 but with restrictions in the air intake.
Anyway they win the Pharaons (Despres), Morocco (Coma).....

Could you do this type of stuff on a V-Strom 650? or would a dr-z400 be more suited for it?

if you re insanely good it will... but even if you are you will need to change almost every part (not only tyres and suspension).
but i wouldn t say it's a good idea, riding a bike in the desert is extremely tough on the ride and the rider
youssiiif 4 years ago
although the honda's are good, the KTM adventure 990 are designed for exactely that purpose and or the BMW 1200 GS.
