This is very good video. I did preserved automatic transmission parts in oil, never came up to my head, that aircraft engines could have the same treatment. It is just like we use to say, you'll never end learning things. Thanks for this video, oh, sound is nice!!!
when u say high blower removed do you mean a second speed supecharger or turbo? i only ask because the Merlin is supercharged and has a two speed supercharger and is also a similar type to the one fitted to the United Kngdoms most unreliable race car the BRM V16
Frim, MERCI de poster ce vidéo!!! I'm a regular spotter @ CYQB (which I supposed is where all of those old ladies are stored). The other day, I was at the edge of rwy 24 and you guys were in the process of de-storing one of those CL-215s. Incidentally, I took a series of photos of C-FTXG on approach (rwy06) today, which is why I searched for this. Écoute pas les tatas de YouTube qui disent que les moteurs sont finis... s'ils volent encore (et sans fumée), c'est que du monde s'en occupent bien.
I saw two of these come back to the field with unused retardant; one dropped it coming towards (but a long way from) us and then went overhead at WOT... I still shiver at the thought of that sound.
I absolutely love the roar of radial engines. I noticed the blades being counted, don't you do so to clear any oil from the cylinders? I also heard the clutch engage right after the engine turned over.
My absolute favorite radial engine video....the sound is music to my ears! love these engines....its always impressive to fickle with starting and keeping them running with technique...instead of simply turning the key :)
In regards to rough running at idle, these engines had fixed ignition timing, in other words timing was advanced for best power, not retarded for smooth idling. P&W experimented with automatic spark advance but discontinued after a while due to problems.
Another amazing fact concerning this plane, when it first flew in 1967, the R-2800 engines had been out of production for 7 years. These engines were most likely overhauled or from surplus stock..
Black smoke/streaks.....id call it rich fuel mixture, which the engine needs on start-up. Plus clearing its throat from being preserved. No problems here. Even radials that are run/used alot are generaly smokey/coughy on start-up. Just the way they are, and what makes them cool! The lower cylinders get alot of oil drainback
This is a perfectly NORMAL startup for an R2800 that's been pickled for several months. Geez I'd hate for some of you "expert" radial engine mechanics to work on MY stuff!
I'm not a pilot and don't pretend to be, but I'm sure once this engine warms up and burns off all that excess oil, she'll purr like a kitten. 18 huge cylinders can be a little cranky after a long winters nap. Any mechanicly Inclined individual would agree. I love these old aircraft. Personally I love the Douglas DC-3. A true American workhorse for the skies.
This engine as just been taking out of Winter preservation, that mean the engine was, at fall time, stalled in preservation oil. So in spring time at first run up, smoke is everywhere and every Color you can imagine.
So stop those theory of bad this an bad that it's only depreservation run-up. Engine runs good, and no injectors were hurt during the run-up ;))))!
@frima666 Not to mention that all radials, no matter if they've been stored or not, smoke oil smoke (blueish gray) on start up. This is because gravity pulls oil down into the lower cylinders. It's also why the engine has to be cranked over several times before firing. To clear the bottom cyls of any standing oil pools.
Not to mention these engines always poured some smoke when cold.
I remember seeing a spring "out of the mothballs" (depreservation) startup where I lost sifgt of the airplane (the #231 if I recall, maybe the #236) from the wings back, apart from the tip of the tail... It was, for a brief time, in it's own smoke cloud.
@hazmat440 Well a 'wimpy' turbine engine has so much power it would cause a propeller to fly apart were it directly connected. Not to put down radials, mind you, I love em.
Since it's an aviation engine, it does tend to run rich hence the black soot deposited on the wing.
The white smoke is probably oil and fuel that has accumulated in the cylinders during the cranking process with the ignition off (they do this to build oi pressure first on the se old bags)
2800's take a minute or so just to clean themselves out. movin the mixture back from the auto-lean detent towards idle cut-off until you get a slight rpm rise (manual leaning) will help to get it running smoother at idle - 1000 rpm during a run up.
Grey smoke is fine, black smoke isn't. Black smoke is improper combustion from too rich of a fuel mixture, dirty valves, dirty carburetor or dirty injectors.
On engine #1 (towards the end of the video) after the oil burns off, you can see fair amounts of black smoke coming out of the exhaust. It's hard to tell though because the video quality is quite poor.
@Easyjet8810 And I obviously need to be a fire fighter to declare a building is on fire or a police officer to know a robbery in progress. Take your condescending elitest attitude elsewhere.
@GGigabiteM No offence meant but as a pilot I happen to know a little more than you do about these engines, they smoke, they rattle, on startup it takes a little while before all cylinders are on duty...in short, it is the way they are...these are engines from the 40s...and your response is like trying to compare apples with pears.
@GGigabiteM aye its been brought out of storage for lack of a better term. that smoke is the oil being burnt off. no other way to get the oil out of it
i love the sound of a radial engine. they could spit sputter and smoke when cold but once they get going smooth as silk. so much character, will never be matched by anything build today.
no, all large transport aircraft built from 1946 usually had hamilton standard hydromatic props which were necessary for take off, cruising and landing when the props would turn and shovel air in reverse. small craft don t need this - but quite a few have constant speed units.
there were quite afew technical problems careless adjustments, wrong pitch or loss of oil in the nose of the props could be deadly and caused several accidents.
FRIM, thanks for posting this vid, this is the most beautifull radial engine start up I have ever seen on U Tube. Just simply raw power at its best. Sound like a 1000ds Harleys firing up. GREAT VIDEO !
Can I get a alarm clock that duplicates this sound?
I love it!

"Rich mixture","bad smoke"-nonsense,radials have lots of oil in the lower cylinders at startup,it just has to burn off.
dgl1962 2 years ago 27
Yes, knowing engines I can tell you people that think it's rich this:
blue smoke = oil being burned
White smoke = water
Black smoke = fuel
SuperCubPA18 2 years ago
actually white smoke is glycol, NOT water...

tha black strikes r from oil...
when tha plane idles and in is taxi ing it dripps oil because the engine cant not do anything with it..
but when it is flying tha engine puts it to use..or something like that , iforgot how it was explained to me..
