"This early in my career"---sounds like he thinks he's SRV or some other real guitar player. This guy is the older brother version of Justin Beiber, who happens to know a few pentatonic scales. He is no better of a guitarist than your average Guitar Center salesman. You could go out any day of the week and see vastly better guitar players at your local blues joint.

I agree that it doesn't make much difference how much of the wood is left bare in terms of sound. When you plug into a 100W amp, you can't tell if the body is resonating or not nor does anyone give a shit. The sound of an electric guitar comes mostly from the pickups. The type of wood matters but as far as how much paint is or is not on it, means almost nothing.
just my 2 cents, i think the relic process or removing the paint does affect tone somewhat, because without paint the body can resonate hence affecting how the strings resonate. not better or worse, just depends on what you're looking for. I always thought john's tone comes more from his amps and pedals vs his guitar. never the less, that guitar is sexy as hell
@jlim200 Electric guitars create sound by interrupting the magnetic field generated in the pickups. Only the small portion of wood surrounding the pups makes a difference. When you plug into an amp its all an electrical signal. It doesn't care how much paint is on the body of the instrument you're playing.
@Danklin24 it does affect it, in the way that if the body resonates, it resonates the strings as well, creating much longer lasting notes etc. but it does not affect the tone much at all, you're right.
There is NO heart and soul in the original black one anyway. Its a custom shop thats been distressed. Its not from years and years of touring, blood, sweat, or anything. I think Mayer is a great guitarist, but a VERY lame gimick with the black one crap.

@rwbrdms1 Wow. How many concerts have you been to and how many times have you heard him play that guitar? You might say it is a gimmick, but for people that can tell the difference in the way a guitar sounds based on the wood it's made out of, the Black1 is quite special.

@rwbrdms1 if you read about it all the distressing is to make the wood really ring which it won't do with all the paint/varnish on it, so they added a little paint just to make it seem like it wasn't just a blank piece of wood.
@tntornadojpm the strats now are very light nitrocellulose finish anyway so that again is a gimmick. sure alot of finish would make a diffrence, but the coats are so light now that you would not be able to tell the difference. i know this because ive built guitars and do it as a hobby. plus if that was the case, everyone would have scruffed off strats/teles etc. alot of people do but alot of people dont.
oooooooooooooooooo the aged pickguard color with that vintage maple headstock and the gold hardward is making me want a black strat for the first time!
I don't get it, if its the same as something you could get off the shelf, then why would you pay extra for it? I tend to like Fender's marketing strategies, but this seems to be a bit of a cop-out. Kind of like a certain Jonas Brothers guitar that I know of :/
@RKRClassic It's probably specked more or less just like his main guitar just without all the wear and tear. Maybe some different pickups, neck carve, etc. A small thing you can notice right away is that the string tree is set a little farther back on the headstock (not to say that makes a profound difference)
@RKRClassic He meant that the particular guitar that he was holding, if he didn't already take it, was heading for a shop window where it would have been available as one of the limited 500 series, so technically the series is limited to 499.
I like how at 0:18 the custom shop build Black1 (probably the original) is sitting on the table in front of him like a loyal german shepard, just waiting to be played.

John Mayer said in one of the first interviews about this guitar that they were going to build 500 like this. he also said that they were going to build "5 dead on balls accurate" very rare versions of the same guitar... has anyone heard any news as to when they might release them?

ughh. I'll keep my olympic white version of this JM strat. Specs are the same and in my opinion it's a much prettier guitar. Black and gold just doesn't do it for me. Great guitar though.
Nothing special about this guitar... it's a JM sig strat with black finish and gold hardware, so what? Fender didn't even make it nitro lacquer so you can't really 'play this thing in', poly lacquer as we all know is indestructible...

@Nightwizard17 well the original is in no way beaten up through playing, it was all relic'd by john cruz, with some help from screwdrivers, dowels etc. It was I believe a mayer signature or an srv he was browsing in a shop that he said had the perfect action and played perfectly according to him. But it was sunburst and he said he hated sunburst. So he got it stripped and repainted black and had them relic it at the same time. @AlexanderHasford yeah, i kindda knew that story, thing is, those strats are painted in thin nitro and the one we see on the vid is polyurethane, same thing they make the buttons from your shirt. so, is reaaaally harder to relic in any way (use or "lab relic" hahaha)

It'll scratch up with use, but unless you're really clumsy or abusive it shouldn't chip too bad, or at all for a good while. try using spirits and gently toasting it to lift some of the finish. that's how steve vai gott the finish for ne of his guitars after trying to imitate the monterrey pop strat, post sacrifice. you'd have to fast. just don't blame me if it goes bad!
@AlexanderHasford Thats not it. John Mayer went to Fender b/c he wanted to see how they made guitars in the Custom shop and the let him make one. He painted the body ( badly) and then John Cruz relic'd and assembled the guitar. Lol if he hated Sunburst why the hell would he own a bunch of them?

Again I could be wrong. True his signature is available in sunburst, but then again most strats are as well and the fact that SRV played may have influenced that. I GOT MINE TODAY!!!!! one of 3 coming to montreal. The guys at the music store said someone wanted to buy it off me. I'm curious how much he'd have said but I love this thing way too much. Rather, I only played it. I won't be picking it up til 2 weeks from now. I played it through a cheapy roland. This thing has the balls. I practically shat myself when I saw it. I don't get it, if its the same as something you could get off the shelf, then why would you pay extra for it? I tend to like Fender's marketing strategies, but this seems to be a bit of a cop-out. Kind of like a certain Jonas Brothers guitar that I know of :/

@RKRClassic It's probably specked more or less just like his main guitar just without all the wear and tear. Maybe some different pickups, neck carve, etc. A small thing you can notice right away is that the string tree is set a little farther back on the headstock (not to say that makes a profound difference)

@RKRClassic He meant that the particular guitar that he was holding, if he didn't already take it, was heading for a shop window where it would have been available as one of the limited 500 series, so technically the series is limited to 499.

The relic was ALWAYS a relic. To be honest I don't think it's possible to get a guitar to look like that without 60 years of solid playing.

@Carthsgtr Yeah, of course it's not possible. What I meant was that's what the guitar would have looked like had it not gotten beat up and used so much, or in John's own words, "...had it stayed in the closet..."

John Mayer said in one of the first interviews about this guitar that they were going to build 500 like this. he also said that they were going to build "5 dead on balls accurate" very rare versions of the same guitar... has anyone heard any news as to when they might release them?

ughh. I'll keep my olympic white version of this JM strat. Specs are the same and in my opinion it's a much prettier guitar. Black and gold just doesn't do it for me. Great guitar though.

Nothing special about this guitar... it's a JM sig strat with black finish and gold hardware, so what? Fender didn't even make it nitro lacquer so you can't really 'play this thing in', poly lacquer as we all know is indestructible...

@Nightwizard17 well the original is in no way beaten up through playing, it was all relic'd by john cruz, with some help from screwdrivers, dowels etc. It was I believe a mayer signature or an srv he was browsing in a shop that he said had the perfect action and played perfectly according to him. But it was sunburst and he said he hated sunburst. So he got it stripped and repainted black and had them relic it at the same time. @AlexanderHasford yeah, i kindda knew that story, thing is, those strats are painted in thin nitro and the one we see on the vid is polyurethane, same thing they make the buttons from your shirt. so, is reaaaally harder to relic in any way (use or "lab relic" hahaha)

@Nightwizard17 You do have a point there. But rest assured I wouldn't want to put any of those nasty things near my 2K baby. It'll scratch up with use, but unless you're really clumsy or abusive it shouldn't chip too bad, or at all for a good while. try using spirits and gently toasting it to lift some of the finish. that's how steve vai gott the finish for ne of his guitars after trying to imitate the monterrey pop strat, post sacrifice. you'd have to fast. just don't blame me if it goes bad!

@AlexanderHasford Thats not it. John Mayer went to Fender b/c he wanted to see how they made guitars in the Custom shop and the let him make one. He painted the body ( badly) and then John Cruz relic'd and assembled the guitar. Lol if he hated Sunburst why the hell would he own a bunch of them?

@YogiSizzle Ah true, forgot that part, haven't read the interview in a while. Although I specifically remember reading that he said something to the effect of the sunburst thing ... Again I could be wrong. True his signature is available in sunburst, but then again most strats are as well and the fact that SRV played may have influenced that. I can't wait, one week until I get my black1! I don't even think I'll sleep for a while how much i'll be playing it ... thanks for the catch yogi :)

I GOT MINE TODAY!!!!! one of 3 coming to montreal. The guys at the music store said someone wanted to buy it off me. I'm curious how much he'd have said but I love this thing way too much. Rather, I only played it. I won't be picking it up til 2 weeks from now. I played it through a cheapy roland. This thing has the balls. I practically shat myself when I saw it. For everyone asking the price, I got it for just over 2 grand. I saved up for a month and I'm still 600 short. Almost there, almost ..

Jeez. You can build a Strat that kicks this one's ass for less than half of what Fender is charging. Any monkey who can operate a drill and a screw driver can put a Strat together that works. he's not a racist, if you really listened to what he said and what his point was you'd see things more clearly, it was a critique of lazy attitudes and fearful fake-pc mincing of words, he was calling the guy on saying hood pass when the guy really meant and thought black pass ie he wasnt talking about whites from the hood was he, and mayer called him on it...it was more racist of the interviewer to lump black acceptance into hood acceptance...
