Why don't they just get new Caribous? Viking Air in Canada has purchased the type certificate so it is not impossible. They have just released the first new twin Otter, the 400 to the public and have all the type certificates right up to the Dash-7. It would be awesome to see a new Bou flying...maybe with a turboprop conversion!
This is a great & well-handled example of how to fly a Caribou to a touchdown with the nosewheel first! This is purely an airshow procedure, & certainly not recommended as a standard landing technique. See why a pilot should not land nosewheel first. Watch this video of a landing accident, which is a type which has been rarely filmed. It's titled "Landing Accident-Rarely Seen Bouncing or Porpoising" (youtu.be/x5ZzktAFJK4)
Just so ya know, that is a RAAF Caribou A04-159. The Aussie flag should convince. Old bou's best party trick at airshows. The real party trick was landing on dirt tracks, tiny open areas, and taking off in a very, very short lengh runway.
Pity they got replace by bug-smashers (King Air 350Bs)
A study was done to re engine the Caribou with PT6 engines. It showed that the Bou would have been faster, carry more and so much cheaper to run, that 5 years after the conversion the conversion would have paid for itself and there would have been still another 15 useful years after the conversion on the airframe to run. But obviously that made too much sense. The Defence Dept is run by morons.
Maybe they should of repowered them with R 4360's (Well perhaps R 2800 CB3's). Mind you the 110 Landrover would not fit in a Bou, but then 110's are not a nice car either. Either was the Series 3. I am still trying to work out ADF policy in what a Beech Kingair offers over a DHC4. I am sure the really good chaps at Defence Materiel Organisation would know the answer. Like now, Mercedes G Wagon. They have drum brakes again. 110 6x6 LR had these.then we modded them to disk. Oh well DMO... :-(
@grogadile225 the king airs sole purpose is to keep the bou pilots up on theyre hours realy they are just for practise till they figure out what we are replacing the bou with , from the last i heard there was one contender from casa and another from airbus , these will fit both the landie and the g wagon but still no more wheelbarrows for the RAAF
SICK!!!!
