Gives me goose bumps. I've been thinking about this song all day.
It looks like the original "Pow Wow" CD is no longer available on Amazon, except at a very high price. That's not right. This is a CD that should be kept in print.
You can download "Witchai Tai To" from Amazon.
I keep the Brewer & Shipley version on my MP3 player.
I used to place my hands on my children's scraped knees , headache or other bumps and bruises and sing this song to them,I told them this song has magic ...
I love this song. We sang it together in our sweat lodge. Pepper's Pow Wow is one of my favorite jazz albums. I was able to see him at the Heartland Cafe in Chicago many years ago. While the music was powerful I was also saddened by the effects of alcohol on his personality. Far too many artists have had their creative lives diminished by drugs and alcohol.
The woman on this version singing counter melody/harmony is Amina Claudine Myers whom I first heard in Chicago playing with other members of the AACM, Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. She is brilliant! Haven't seen her in many years now. I hope she is still making good music. I Love how they work together on this. Pepper's Pow Wow is a really good video documentary too. Very moving. I recommend highly!
Its basically bollocks. You find an instrument and it guides you.Ghosts are nothing, the power of memory is what iis..is what it is.Respect for our parents and their parents is all well and good.Too much worship and you end up with a religion on your plate..or a head on a pole
It;'s nice to watch this. I have a bootleg tape that I made at the Heart land Cafe in Chicago with Pepper playing with Hamid Drake, Adam Rudolph and some other guys. Very moving musician.
Of course ask Larry Coryell. They were DEEP together decades ago.
I am a big fan of Jim's music, I am to young to have ever seen him play but,a guy I know was real good friends with Pepper and he speaks very highly of him as a musician. His music is just fantastic.
I owned the Garbarek recording for many many years and always loved the joy in that music. Recently I finally got around to checking out Jim's original and a wonderful thing happened. I just got an intense feeling of joy and peace all at once. Tears welled up in my eyes. There really is some magic in this tune, isn't there?
I can't thank you enough for the two Jim Pepper videos you've provided. I used to go see him when he and his band would make the trip up through Portland and Eugene in the late 70's and early 80's. His music was always so full of passion, and his band was also great. I still remember the great guitar player that was with him at the time. Does anyone know that guitar player's name? Thanks again, b3geek, this is a real treat.
It really doesn't get any better than this! The emotion in this music is very moving. Jan Garbarek also recorded this in 1973 on his album "Witchi-tai-to", also incredible.
HI! Anybody, do you know were can I get this song?! Im looking for it. If somebody can tell me, I will be grateful. I have this song in a cassette, I wanna find the mp3. Thanks!

This is the man that brought his grandfather's song to us. Who knows how long it has been in the history of man unspoken.

It's lovely to see this video of Jim, an underrated jazz musician for most of his life.
I was privileged to call Jim my friend for nearly two decades — even more privileged to have performed with him in Alaska.

That guitar player would have been Dave Haskell. He currently lives and plays guitar in the Bay Area.

You can hear Jan Garbarek's 1973 recording of this on his Myspace page. If you like this, that's all I need to say.
