Its such a shame as Margate in its day was a great place to go in the summer with Dreamland and all the arcades- now its just run down, boarded up with weirdos and drunks everywhere!

I was born and bred in Thanet and it shames me to see what it has become...Margate & Ramsgate are sterile, downbeat, shabby places and only Brodstairs seems to thrive, thanks to to the local tradespeople and residents. Dreamland, Margate pier, Pleasurama, , Ramsgate Model Village, Pegwell Bay Hoverport - all gone and what has been left in their place? Derelict areas frequented by drug addicts, winos, grafitti artists and other ne'er-do-wells....sort it out Thanet Council!

London is only 70 minutes away and Margate has a great beach, I do not go for a day trip to see art!!!!!!!!!!!, clean the car parks up and have a zero tolerance to graffiti, last time I was there is felt like bad parts of Hackney, no excuses Thanet council, you have failed the people of Margate, sort it out with the revenue from your new out of town shopping area which also helped to destroy the High Street in Margate.

I see Turner Contemporary, 1.Nice to look at 2. A icon for Margate 3. Design by a international famous British architect very popular in Germany at the moment. 4th and finial, 150,000 thousand visitors to gallery predicted in the first year, if that is true imagine 150,000 thousand people spend one hundred pounds each, I think that would be 15 million spent in the local economy in year1+ employment for cleaning building ,employment for running the building and maintenance. and cafe.

I just wanted to throw it out there, to whoever cares, that I and a number of people I know, actually WANT the Turner Centre to be built. Not everyone's interests revolve around Escape, Wetherspoons and the Job Centre you know.

Danguy I'm local, I was born here in 1965, I'm regular working class, I'mnot 'arty farty' I just recognise that Margate is evolving painful as it might be. Who is going to open the shops? The seaside you talk of regarding Dreamland went into decline towards the end of the 1960s when people started holidaying overseas, before Thanet Council was even conceived. How do you know a minority want the art centre, done a poll?

Got a great Art Centre being built right on the front by the Jetty. Loads of people moan of course and what a lot of people can't understand is the money for this development was ring fenced so not available for anything else. This of course is the Turner Centre and you'll see the most amazing sunsets here something that inspired Joseph Mallord William Turner. The British seaside is evolving and can't live in the past of vulgar little overpriced shops, gimicks, tat and that rubbish.

If you actually stop and bother to ask normal everyday people that live there they would say we want shops reopened and entertainment like replacing the arcades and maybe even dreamland to it's full glory!

Of course if you ask these "arty farty" people they are going to agreee that they want it but those people are in a minority and many of them probably don't even live in Margate!

@uklandman Cont.... Spending money on repairs to the pavements instead of planning art centres so people dont trip up on broken bollards. of course then TDC try and wriggle out of it by quickly fixing it cheaply as possible then claiming it wasnt broken!.

I remember visiting Margate in 2002, when it wasn't so run down, and it still had "Dreamland" the fun park which I always loved going to. I went with my father and my older sister. We used to absolutely love the rides and it was always crowded.

In 2007, we hadn't noticed how run down it had become and we stayed for a night and the place was totally gone in comparison to how it was.

I'm so sorry for the oldies who live in Margate, it was once a great place. If I had the money... only....

those were the days! I reckon Margate was good until early eighties, but sadly it's all over now as far as seaside resort goes now. There's nothing left for visitors, except the beaches of course--with cars crashed on them!

i was there i think i may. ww did spend i night in one house in construction cos all the hotel where ful cos some mods parade.
