  • He went straight to the ground...

lol where else would it go???

  • they make the hookers head hitting the ground look horrible, really they go face first

  • Sports Science: We brought in Rampage Jackson to hit a punching bag, but when we look for Rugby players, we get a few guys who said they played ten years back when they were in college.

  • Thats why u gotta bind up tight, I hook even though this can happen cuz the games hella fun :P

  • I really wish Sports science would get in the international rugby teams like South Africa, New Zealand or Australia to do the scrum test and tackles tests. Previously they used club team from the states to test tackle stats vs professional NFL players hardly a fair comparison!!

  • Thats Why, you MUST turn your neck to the left side

  • Sport science should do a segment on the side step or goose step shimmy thingy that alot of rugby players use... Gotta be some interesting facts when analysing how someone can shift there entire mass while airborne.

  • Fuk this show it's a lie Rugby is for men! Why the fuc props let loose of their hooker

  • In my youth I very badly damaged my spine playing as Hooker. I can't exactly remember how I damaged it but it was an all day competition. I saw a rugby specific physiotherapist (or whatever they are called) the next day and he told me that A LOT of force travelled down my spine and he said he hadn't seen it so bad in his whole career (tending to the senior XVs not the under 12s) and I lay in bed for 2 days and didn't play rugby for a year.

  • the props' bodies are as crooked as a politician. terrible scrummaging body position. the statistics obtained are NOT accurate.

  • bad scrum

  • rugby legend scott johnson!!..... who?

  • They don't have scrums in league so...

  • I play hooker at a representative level and man, a prop doesn't leave you like that, it's not really neck when it collapses its more shoulders and possibilities of dislocated shoulders, the worst injury I have had is a neck muscle strain but fair enough it could cause paralyses but I'm saying it would be more muscle and shoulder trouble

  • Second row ftw.... \m/

  • I have to say this is both an understatement and an overstatement...any half decent prop would soften the blow and any half wit hooker would roll out of it by releasing the bind asap when the scrum went down, however if the opposing front row go down and the opposition hooker is under them then it can actually worsen the blow.

  • i'm a hooker... and i don't like what they say there about injures and injures... and more injures :'(

  • This video not be called "Sport Sciences" , this video is for "Sport Ignorants" ,never, never occurs this form of collapse if you was trained the most simple...how to perform the right scrum

  • This is rubbish, I play hooker and its not bad when it collapses, theres only injuries when the scrum is uneven on one side or someone doesn't grip or the guy is too weak.

  • lol he went straight to the ground? where else is he going to go

  • @Shift4chizzle McDonald's duh who doesn't know that

  • @magiksixtynin3 haha

  • The most dangerous team sport in the world??? You'd think a show named sports science would look up their stats before making a claim like that. Of course rugby has more cuts, bruises, minor injuries etc... However, it pales in comparison to American Football when it comes to lasting or severe injuries such as spinal injuries, torn tendons, broken bones. This entire video segment is complete farce.

  • @murtaugh777 More people have died playing rugby then playing "American Football" buddy

  • @MrFluffytoilet I qoute: "From 1931 to 2006, the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research has reported 1,006 direct and 683 indirect fatalities resulting from participation in all organized football (professional, college, high school, and sandlot) in the US.[4]; the yearly number of indirect fatalities has remained near 9.0 per year"

  • @MrFluffytoilet From the IRB, Catastrophic Injuries in Rugby Union:

An Assessment of the Risk: "The risk of sustaining a catastrophic injury in rugby union in England was

generally lower than that experienced in a wide range of other collision sports, such as ice hockey

(4/100,000 per year), rugby league (2/100,000 per year) and American Football (1/100,000 per

    year).

  • @murtaugh777 sorry I played both sports and In rugby my first game I already got shoulder dislocation not like in football= pads pads pads and more pads.. then roid riod riods

  • @murtaugh777 I've actually worked first aid at rugby matches, not international but varsity and inter-house. In half a dozen matches last year I had to deal with 2 players suffering 2 inch long gashes on their heads, a dislocated shoulder, 2 broken bones, a handful of concushions, and 3 guys carried off on stretchers. Funny thing is they all, except the fractures, wanted to get taped up asap, shoulder popped back in, and get back on the field. Of course none were allowed to continue

  • Have played prop my whole life never even seen someone injured in a scrum. Americans take on rugby is hilarious always getting ametuar players to demonstrate as well. When rugby players are proper athletes. (See the likes of Stephen Ferris or Jerome Kaino).

  • I have been in thousands of scrums and never had a hooker injured like this. The serious neck injuries I have seen were from poor tackling techniques mainly due to coaching (or lack there of) or a football history

  • this is why this is the best sport in the world and most fun to play !

  • If they were lower, straight backs, square feet there would have been more power when they hit. Just saying;D .

  • Both front rows are in danger, not just the hooker. Props wouldn't just drop their hook like that and you don't see a lot of spinal injuries like this in international rugby because the first thing the teach is to NOT end up like a vegetable.

If they're gonna have stupid shit like this on tv, next time they should show the science behind a Back keeping his hair perfect while scoring a try and how a Forward can drink so much beer after a match.

  • pretty sure half those clips were from rugby leagu.. id say AFL or hockey are potentially more dangerous but Rugby is definitely one of the most physical

  • Sports Science, stop saying bulshit!

  • "Rugby is the most dangerous team sport in the world"..... Any facts to back this up? Nothing I've ever seen suggests that's true

  • @z0mgrugbyreturns the scientist said it.

  • @PitaNZL123 I know the scientist said it, but I want to know where he got his information from

  • terrible technique. dont just let go of your hooker lol

  • I love how they are talking about the dangers of the scrum yet they show clips of Rugby League being played.

  • @GiefGoldPlx rugby league scrums were really dangerous too back in the day, waay more than union. That's why league went with uncontested scrums starting in '96 I think.

  • lol one time we were in the scrum and someone said "giggity"

  • the ruck is the most dangerous, has been for years.

  • this program its pure s#it because why that head coach goes into USA team after he manage Australia and Wales there was only 1 reason... he dont know what is rugby and then the scrum its a dangerous thing, yeah im hooker, and if one hooker get nervous to get in into a scrum because this program scared you....dont play because you dont know what are you playing...at least 1 more thing, the hookers train with only first line making colapses to know how to fall down good and dont get so much hurted.

  • American Football is a great excuse to watch commercials for 2 hours...

  • hahaha lol when they dropped the dummy never happens like that im a prop i go down aswell when the scrum collapses hookers are in more damnger but props can suffer aswell ive had 2 neck injuries and a back injury was out 25 weeks in totall with the 3 and that wasjust scrummaging injuries ive allso broken my nose 3 times broken my ankle broken left hand broken thumb on right hand quite an unlucky 5 years tbh only 20 haha still got anouther 20 years left

  • snag the ball with there feet so now hookers are called snaggers didnt relise hooker was a name not the actuall tecnique involved with y they are called hookers you hook the ball not snag stupid americans stop trying to play men sports and stick with your sponge and helmets

  • Comment removed

  • Americans don´t know rugby. They are talking about scrum but they show a kiwe haka image. Hell, the kiwis play rugby league and there is no "contested scrum" in rugby league. Damn you sport science.

  • When the scrum collapses the whole front row goes down not just the Two hookers!

  • funny thing is this wouldnt even be the worst way for a hooker to go down picture the scrum collapsing on top of the two hookers and all that weight pressing down...thinking of that makes me wonder how there arent even more injuries when scrums collapse

  • even though i am a HUGE football fan, rugby is tougher and more dangerous, i'll give that to you

but believe me when i tell you this, football players (including me) don't play football because they're afraid to play rugby \ hit and get hit without pads.

we play football because we like it more than rugby.

if rugby is 90% execution ( tackling etc) and 10% planning

football is 90% planning \ play calling \ mental game and 10% execution

rugby may need big balls, our sport needs balls AND brains

  • @someone19901000 the coaches are the ones with the brains, not the players (with the exception of the QB). football has coaches that can call plays in the middle of the game because you stop the game every 10 freakin seconds. rugby is 40min of non-stop play over two halves. Forwards certainly have the more physically demanding job but Backs have to run their asses off and make open-field tackles (which can be extremely difficult).

  • @CaptainFatSackk

no buddy, not at all ...the coaches are not the only ones with the brains

every single player on the football field has to have great play-reading ability ...don't believe me?

    offensive linemen: figure out blitzes

running back: figure out the defense your playing against to find the running lanes, understand your own protections

wide receiver: understand the zone blitz and find the soft spots

i ran out of characters, all positions need play-reading ability!!!

  • @CaptainFatSackk

Fullback: find the holes for your running back and clear the way

tight end: understand the zone blitz, understand the run play and know who your supposed to block ..

    defense:

D-line: understand where the O line is trying to protect, distinguish between play action and a running play

linebacker (has to have GREAT play-reading ability): read the run, read the pass, read the quarterback's eyes, read the drop (how many steps), read the WR's posts

  • @CaptainFatSackk

defensive backs: read the wide receiver's route, read the wide receiver's hips, read the wide, read the quarterback's eyes

also i forgot for linebackers: read the check-down throw

football is an assigment sport ..its almost like a cell

if one player fails, the whole team fails

in rugby, its more of an open-play sport, if one player fails to make a tackle the ball-carrier will find 200 people on his back

in football if 1 player misses a tackle, it can cost a TD

  • @CaptainFatSackk

and on offense if a player misses a block it can cause in a run-for-a-loss or a quarterback sack

football is a trust sport, you have to trust your teammates because a lone-wolf won't be able to make a name for a team

and i just want to say quarterbacks are not the most important position

the most important positions are O line and D line ..put those down and you won a football game

its not like rugby, even tho it seems so but it really isn't

  • WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS BULLSHIT!!....Fucking americans I have never seen that happen on any rugby field. Props don't drop the hooker. He's supported by the props. This is misleading and totally false. Americans need to stop watching this bullshit sport science. Everything is edited to look its worse for ratings and popularity and not the truth. Fucking bullshit

  • @petnzme01 A kid was paralysed in QLD from the scrum collapsing in the same manner.

  • omfg this show frustrates the hell out of me. They wanted to show the impact on a hooker's neck in a collasped scrum... and all they did was let the two props drop the hooker? THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE! That does not happen in a collapsed scrum! First, the props PULL the hooker down, and there are FIVE, yes FIVE players driving behind the front three, pushing them into the ground. But wait; I'm not finished. THE OPPOSING SCRUM IS PUSHING DOWN ON THAT TOO! Another fail by Sport Science -_-

  • Lol a front row would never let their hooker slam like that. And they need to pick a decent team, that scrum was horrible, timing, their backs were crooked, and the hit was shit. Just saying. Get some kiwis on here to show how it's done

  • @SgtAwesomeYo totally right man no prop i ever met would ever let his mate get planted like that total bullshit this stuff.

  • at least get a decent coach and two decent teams.

  • poor body position on a couple of those guys, and legendary? ive honestly never heard of the guy

  • God damn this show is so stupid lol, but funny to watch.

  • lol im a 15 year old hooker and it hurts like a mofo having all that pressure on ur back

  • @mgmtlover100 hope u get paid enough ;)

  • @timbocaff86 haha ill get back to u in a bit my gf just broke up with me for another guy but i got my uzi ready and my friend is driving and they are at his house so ill be back later

  • @mgmtlover100 haha

  • I seriously dont understand why some of you guys are being such whiney bitches? This show is always showing football players doing hard hits and stuff, but say here that rugby is the most dabgerous team sport ever and you guys still bitch like girls, Injuries can occur in any sport and all they are showing is what can happen and how to prevent it. If they didnt do anything on rugby you bitches would cry about that also.

  • This badly misconstrues how "dangerous" rugby is. There are FAR more soft-tissue injuries in American football than rugby, and tackles are more controlled in union than in football and league. This comes off like a pseudo-smear campaign.

  • If all members of the tight 5 are trained well and no-one tries to cheat the scrum isn't that dangerous. And rugby isn't as brutal as they made it out to be and a lot of the most brutal tackles shown were from league (the redneck sport)

  • they should have used the All Blacks..

  • Ah Screw that I'm not going middle!!

  • i support rugby league, but rugby leagues scrum is nothing compared to a rugby scrum.

  • @JDWbuddy bro, league used to have contested scrums, but they were too dangerous and the line is so messed up. Injuries occured in the scrums, that's why league banned contested scrums in the mid-90s.

  • Thats the uglyest scrum Ive ever seen

  • It's a team game. i'm a prop and you're number one job is to protect the hooker. You never abandon you're ooker like that.

  • Front row scrum take 14 g-force

  • in the first line from an Australia is the word shit, should of been more authentic and said cunt but i guess that will have to settle

  • I'm a a fly-half but would be rather p###ed at the loose-head prop if he did that in a game

  • I've never seen a scrum collapse with such force! The other front row holds it up and it bends and folds a lot slower than that (been part of MANY of those as a player).

  • Comment removed

  • Again shitty rugby players but finnally they call a good ccoach.. but for what?

  • Ok if you are a real hooker in rugby you would land nose first into the ground

I rather hav e a broken nose than be fucked over

And rugby has certain body positions to prevent the worst of accidents

  • @DONGJIN95 land knee first and use ur back slightly arched, stops your head hitting the ground as hard

  • Two of England's best front row players (Steve Thompson (hooker) and Jason Leonard (prop) have both had serious neck injuries but I have to thank the Americans for fixing Steves neck (i think it was steve) so he could play again

  • Ive played rugby for 8 years, all 8 in front row 4 as loose head and 5 as hooker, have been in a fair few collapsed scrums, ways to avoid hurting your neck allow your feet to slide right off the groung so your knees hit first before your head

  • How many international players have broken their neck in a scrum though? Little or none and that's because they practice ways to protect themselves when the scrum collapses.

  • well, this is why we work religious on my body position so if the scrum collapses, we drop down on our upper body as a whole rather getting our necks rolled.

  • i not going to stop playing (I'm a prop)

  • These guys are pathetic. Try a scrum by South Africa or any other national rugby team

  • it also has teh biggest obesity problem - what's your point? Biggest certainly isn't best, is it. Shows like this prove it :)

  • I've only ever been involved in no more than 5 collapsed scrums in 11 years of playing. 7 years as hooker, got a bad injury from a collapsed scrum and shifted to loose head prop for the remaining 4 years.

Two things cause this. Bad ground or a prop pulling down the scrum when he is under pressure..

  • The narrator is amazing - he can't even pronounce Wales and Australia properly. Why do so many American shows have these cheesy hyper-emotional voice-overs?

  • @blueray1969 To be more interesting. America has the biggest entertainment industry in the world, so I suggest you shut up and take notes, there's a reason why your country can't compete.

  • @hundredand9 Typical American, lmfao.

  • @Ub3rSk1llz Typical butthurt Australian, lmfao.

  • @hundredand9 Entertainment...... You're talking about people being fakes hence, a fake country.

  • @hazza3 Yeah, totally fake with our fake largest economy that your country thrives off of :)

  • @hundredand9 ....You know you're 14 trill in debt right? btw, doesn't your country depend on Emirates for economy? :)

  • This is the complete wrong way, to experience a collapse srum

  • poor dummy

  • ur not allowed to push until the ball is placed into the scrum.........

  • @Dreadepic Yeah when you're 10 maybe that's the case.

  • @Dreadepic Yeaah ue are. it goes"touch, pause, ingage" thn ue put the ball inn.

  • @muselep its CROUCH, TOUCH, PAUSE, ENGAGE then you push when the ball is put in or else its dangerous, and when I was in a scrum and we pushed before the ball we got told off lol

  • first thing to the the ground when a scrum collapses is one of the props...

  • you cant play rugby on astro-turf....

  • i dont see why people compare american football to this ,american football is mostly about reaction time nothing like rugby

  • well rugby is now my new favorite sport :) american football seems so whack compared to this haha and i'm american :p

  • @HeyHayleyG

Good call man. check out the video with the title Ireland Rugby Montage.

    it's a great video.

  • video made by american!! what else can we think!! BIAS!!!!!!

  • Who's the narrator? Why can't he pronounce 'Wales' and 'Australia'?

  • Why do they show State of Origin at 1:09? Thats League, not union. And the scrums are a joke in League.

  • ahahahahahaha i couldnt help but laugh at the red hooker bahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah tiny neck = break.

  • Wait he used to coach Wales and Australia, then it lead him to America? He must have been pure shit if he got that bad of a demotion.

  • @Katazka He was only part of the USA eagles for about 3 months. He's been up and about but I wouldn't call him "legendary" like Sports Science suggests.

  • All that shit about Neck injuries is bollocks. Hookers nearly never get injured. You want to know why? They have over 40inch Necks. It's Impossible to Bend the head back when you have that much muscle.

  • well yeah. if a scrum collapsed because the two props stepped out it would cause major spinal injury. and it would be all the props' fault. a hooker should never be in a situation to drop without the rest of the front row dropping as well. such a poorly made vid.

  • their scrum was wrong! the locks were standing up when the hit was made. And those props look softer than a sponge

  • este video es una pelotudez..... this is a very stupid video......

  • I never knew hookers played rugby.

  • I went from prop to centre in two years

  • @userpass97 haha no way! I went from hooker to lock, to flanker, to 8, then fullback in 5 years

  • That was such a negatively constructed video about rugby. They used the fact that the majority of people in America are poorly educated about the sport to promote viewers. Rugby has risk just like any other sport. Knowledge of the game is essential to minimizing injury, just as it would be in football or hockey. Since protective equipment is minimal, there is more focus on technique. E.g. Tackling with head up, to avoid the head-on-head tackle common in football, due to lack of helmet.

  • hookers arent always the first to go down? its usually the props...

  • This is why I play backs all the time...hell no to rugging.

  • cool video and i play hooker for my club

  • also as the hooker in red showed that most hooked stand with one leg in front and the other at the back which supports falling to the knee when it collapses, and surely the neck would only do that if the scrum kept moving forward when it collapses but they fold in on each other

  • the thing is that most hookers will still have a foot on the ground or will be able to go down to a knee. i've played hooker in the past and when the scrum has collapsed i've never gone down straight on my head, sure i have hit my head on the ground but most of the energy was taken away by my legs so my neck was fine

  • and the hooker usually falls on his knees first, so that takes quite a bit of the impact away.

  • what the hell. who are these overweight chumps? this is ugly scrummaging, you can tell these guys are super amateur. U wanna see a scrum. put the english scrum against the south african scrum. Meeeeean

  • @kainoizking Andrew Sheridan FTW

  • When a scrum does go down the hooker doesnt really fall in the same way as the dummy does at 3:36, with the pressure from the opposing team it pushing the head of the hooker underneath his own neck. Its very rare that a hooker ends up faceplanted after a scrum collapse. not a very accurate test..

  • @KURISU187 Imagine having to do it 60-65 times in per game, against players who average 6ft6 145kg. Such is the life of a Gridiron Lineman.

  • Every time I play rugby and doing the scrums I always get scared entering it but I like it anyway.

  • I'm so glad I'm a winger after watching this...

  • Rugby is just football with no pads....shit we used to do this shit every sunday.....

  • @WillDaboi Say that to the guy that died in my school playing rugby.. Rugby is ten times more physical than football, in rugby you are constantly hit, whether it is rucking, mauling, scrimmaging or tackling. In football you are hit 2-6 times a game with breaks in between plays to recover. So no, rugby is NOT just football without pads.

  • @ScootezZ well i know the physicality of football i know what its like to get speared and have a helmet to helmet crash running full speed... so to me like i said i believe rugby to be no more than football with no pads...that scrum is just like a fumble pile u have no idea how many limbs i have seen break in those things...i maybe wrong but thats my opinion and u have the right to yours also

  • @WillDaboi Yeah, suppose a scrum is like a fumble pile up but a fumble only occurs maybe once or twice a game, scrums occur on average 20 times a match! But yes football and rugby are the 2 most dangerous sports in my opinion and i have the utmost respect for those who play the sport.

  • @ScootezZ as do i..its all respect

  • i feel bad for the hookers now as a prop

  • who the fuck is that coach wow he is the american rugby teams coach there shit if they versed nz all blacks they would get fucked on

  • okay lets do this test again outside america, using some second rate football team and a professional rugby team!

  • and this is why I play Flanker ;)

  • @darkangel5090 Hail third row!

  • rugby fans, just accept that your sport is minor to Football

  • @Khieener lol. Why would we accept such blatant lies?

  • @Nikon05 because football is clearly better

  • @Khieener i dont blame you for thinking that, you're from america so its slightly biased. I however have grown up with nfl europe and rugby and thus have a real opinion

  • @Nikon05 What makes you think I'm from America. I'm also from europe, so my opinion is as real as yours.

  • @Khieener well i was wrong I guess. you're the first non-American ive ever met who thinks that. that said, where in europea are you from? because obviously rugby is biggest in the six nations. etc

  • i play hooker. thanx, sports science, 4 scaring the living shit outa me

  • @denvernegative0 It´s really hard to bend your neck like this video shows, mostly when scrum falls you land on your forhead. I´d say the second row is more expose since they can have all the first row land on their necks.

  • Neither of these sports are the most dangerous. Statistically, more people die playing bowls than any other sport. I want Sports Science to do an experiment on bowls!

  • thats a pretty shit job being head coach OF AMERICA. not the head coach part but the american rugby team is shit our under 21's could trash them

  • any one can get hit at any given moment in football, and the pads hurt more they are like wepaons. every rugby player at my school says football hurts more and is tougher. but hey we all got our own opinions, am i right
