Sports Science: We brought in Rampage Jackson to hit a punching bag, but when we look for Rugby players, we get a few guys who said they played ten years back when they were in college.
pointless video. they didnt measure the additional force provided by the opposing team pushing when the hooker is dropped. you dont get dropped on to the ground when a scrum collapses( like the dummy), you get driven into it.in a way this test is to dangerous to do accurately.
I really wish Sports science would get in the international rugby teams like South Africa, New Zealand or Australia to do the scrum test and tackles tests. Previously they used club team from the states to test tackle stats vs professional NFL players hardly a fair comparison!!
Sport science should do a segment on the side step or goose step shimmy thingy that alot of rugby players use... Gotta be some interesting facts when analysing how someone can shift there entire mass while airborne.
In my youth I very badly damaged my spine playing as Hooker. I can't exactly remember how I damaged it but it was an all day competition. I saw a rugby specific physiotherapist (or whatever they are called) the next day and he told me that A LOT of force travelled down my spine and he said he hadn't seen it so bad in his whole career (tending to the senior XVs not the under 12s) and I lay in bed for 2 days and didn't play rugby for a year.
I play hooker at a representative level and man, a prop doesn't leave you like that, it's not really neck when it collapses its more shoulders and possibilities of dislocated shoulders, the worst injury I have had is a neck muscle strain but fair enough it could cause paralyses but I'm saying it would be more muscle and shoulder trouble
I have to say this is both an understatement and an overstatement...any half decent prop would soften the blow and any half wit hooker would roll out of it by releasing the bind asap when the scrum went down, however if the opposing front row go down and the opposition hooker is under them then it can actually worsen the blow.
This video not be called "Sport Sciences" , this video is for "Sport Ignorants" ,never, never occurs this form of collapse if you was trained the most simple...how to perform the right scrum
This is rubbish, I play hooker and its not bad when it collapses, theres only injuries when the scrum is uneven on one side or someone doesn't grip or the guy is too weak.
The most dangerous team sport in the world??? You'd think a show named sports science would look up their stats before making a claim like that. Of course rugby has more cuts, bruises, minor injuries etc... However, it pales in comparison to American Football when it comes to lasting or severe injuries such as spinal injuries, torn tendons, broken bones. This entire video segment is complete farce.
@MrFluffytoilet I qoute: "From 1931 to 2006, the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research has reported 1,006 direct and 683 indirect fatalities resulting from participation in all organized football (professional, college, high school, and sandlot) in the US.[4]; the yearly number of indirect fatalities has remained near 9.0 per year"
@murtaugh777 sorry I played both sports and In rugby my first game I already got shoulder dislocation not like in football= pads pads pads and more pads.. then roid riod riods
@murtaugh777 I've actually worked first aid at rugby matches, not international but varsity and inter-house. In half a dozen matches last year I had to deal with 2 players suffering 2 inch long gashes on their heads, a dislocated shoulder, 2 broken bones, a handful of concushions, and 3 guys carried off on stretchers. Funny thing is they all, except the fractures, wanted to get taped up asap, shoulder popped back in, and get back on the field. Of course none were allowed to continue
Have played prop my whole life never even seen someone injured in a scrum. Americans take on rugby is hilarious always getting ametuar players to demonstrate as well. When rugby players are proper athletes. (See the likes of Stephen Ferris or Jerome Kaino).
I have been in thousands of scrums and never had a hooker injured like this. The serious neck injuries I have seen were from poor tackling techniques mainly due to coaching (or lack there of) or a football history
Both front rows are in danger, not just the hooker. Props wouldn't just drop their hook like that and you don't see a lot of spinal injuries like this in international rugby because the first thing the teach is to NOT end up like a vegetable.
If they're gonna have stupid shit like this on tv, next time they should show the science behind a Back keeping his hair perfect while scoring a try and how a Forward can drink so much beer after a match.
pretty sure half those clips were from rugby leagu.. id say AFL or hockey are potentially more dangerous but Rugby is definitely one of the most physical

@timbocaff86 haha ill get back to u in a bit my gf just broke up with me for another guy but i got my uzi ready and my friend is driving and they are at his house so ill be back later
I seriously dont understand why some of you guys are being such whiney bitches? This show is always showing football players doing hard hits and stuff, but say here that rugby is the most dabgerous team sport ever and you guys still bitch like girls, Injuries can occur in any sport and all they are showing is what can happen and how to prevent it. If they didnt do anything on rugby you bitches would cry about that also.
This badly misconstrues how "dangerous" rugby is. There are FAR more soft-tissue injuries in American football than rugby, and tackles are more controlled in union than in football and league. This comes off like a pseudo-smear campaign.
If all members of the tight 5 are trained well and no-one tries to cheat the scrum isn't that dangerous. And rugby isn't as brutal as they made it out to be and a lot of the most brutal tackles shown were from league (the redneck sport)
@JDWbuddy bro, league used to have contested scrums, but they were too dangerous and the line is so messed up. Injuries occured in the scrums, that's why league banned contested scrums in the mid-90s.
I've never seen a scrum collapse with such force! The other front row holds it up and it bends and folds a lot slower than that (been part of MANY of those as a player).
Two of England's best front row players (Steve Thompson (hooker) and Jason Leonard (prop) have both had serious neck injuries but I have to thank the Americans for fixing Steves neck (i think it was steve) so he could play again
Ive played rugby for 8 years, all 8 in front row 4 as loose head and 5 as hooker, have been in a fair few collapsed scrums, ways to avoid hurting your neck allow your feet to slide right off the groung so your knees hit first before your head
How many international players have broken their neck in a scrum though? Little or none and that's because they practice ways to protect themselves when the scrum collapses.
well, this is why we work religious on my body position so if the scrum collapses, we drop down on our upper body as a whole rather getting our necks rolled.
I've only ever been involved in no more than 5 collapsed scrums in 11 years of playing. 7 years as hooker, got a bad injury from a collapsed scrum and shifted to loose head prop for the remaining 4 years.
Two things cause this. Bad ground or a prop pulling down the scrum when he is under pressure..
The narrator is amazing - he can't even pronounce Wales and Australia properly. Why do so many American shows have these cheesy hyper-emotional voice-overs?
@blueray1969 To be more interesting. America has the biggest entertainment industry in the world, so I suggest you shut up and take notes, there's a reason why your country can't compete.
@muselep its CROUCH, TOUCH, PAUSE, ENGAGE then you push when the ball is put in or else its dangerous, and when I was in a scrum and we pushed before the ball we got told off lol
@Katazka He was only part of the USA eagles for about 3 months. He's been up and about but I wouldn't call him "legendary" like Sports Science suggests.
All that shit about Neck injuries is bollocks. Hookers nearly never get injured. You want to know why? They have over 40inch Necks. It's Impossible to Bend the head back when you have that much muscle.
well yeah. if a scrum collapsed because the two props stepped out it would cause major spinal injury. and it would be all the props' fault. a hooker should never be in a situation to drop without the rest of the front row dropping as well. such a poorly made vid.
That was such a negatively constructed video about rugby. They used the fact that the majority of people in America are poorly educated about the sport to promote viewers. Rugby has risk just like any other sport. Knowledge of the game is essential to minimizing injury, just as it would be in football or hockey. Since protective equipment is minimal, there is more focus on technique. E.g. Tackling with head up, to avoid the head-on-head tackle common in football, due to lack of helmet.
also as the hooker in red showed that most hooked stand with one leg in front and the other at the back which supports falling to the knee when it collapses, and surely the neck would only do that if the scrum kept moving forward when it collapses but they fold in on each other
the thing is that most hookers will still have a foot on the ground or will be able to go down to a knee. i've played hooker in the past and when the scrum has collapsed i've never gone down straight on my head, sure i have hit my head on the ground but most of the energy was taken away by my legs so my neck was fine
what the hell. who are these overweight chumps? this is ugly scrummaging, you can tell these guys are super amateur. U wanna see a scrum. put the english scrum against the south african scrum. Meeeeean
When a scrum does go down the hooker doesnt really fall in the same way as the dummy does at 3:36, with the pressure from the opposing team it pushing the head of the hooker underneath his own neck. Its very rare that a hooker ends up faceplanted after a scrum collapse. not a very accurate test..
@WillDaboi Say that to the guy that died in my school playing rugby.. Rugby is ten times more physical than football, in rugby you are constantly hit, whether it is rucking, mauling, scrimmaging or tackling. In football you are hit 2-6 times a game with breaks in between plays to recover. So no, rugby is NOT just football without pads.
@ScootezZ well i know the physicality of football i know what its like to get speared and have a helmet to helmet crash running full speed... so to me like i said i believe rugby to be no more than football with no pads...that scrum is just like a fumble pile u have no idea how many limbs i have seen break in those things...i maybe wrong but thats my opinion and u have the right to yours also
@WillDaboi Yeah, suppose a scrum is like a fumble pile up but a fumble only occurs maybe once or twice a game, scrums occur on average 20 times a match! But yes football and rugby are the 2 most dangerous sports in my opinion and i have the utmost respect for those who play the sport.
@Khieener i dont blame you for thinking that, you're from america so its slightly biased. I however have grown up with nfl europe and rugby and thus have a real opinion
@Khieener well i was wrong I guess. you're the first non-American ive ever met who thinks that. that said, where in europea are you from? because obviously rugby is biggest in the six nations. etc
@denvernegative0 It´s really hard to bend your neck like this video shows, mostly when scrum falls you land on your forhead. I´d say the second row is more expose since they can have all the first row land on their necks.
Neither of these sports are the most dangerous. Statistically, more people die playing bowls than any other sport. I want Sports Science to do an experiment on bowls!
any one can get hit at any given moment in football, and the pads hurt more they are like wepaons. every rugby player at my school says football hurts more and is tougher. but hey we all got our own opinions, am i right
He went straight to the ground...
lol where else would it go???

if one player fails, the whole team fails
in rugby, its more of an open-play sport, if one player fails to make a tackle the ball-carrier will find 200 people on his back
in football if 1 player misses a tackle, it can cost a TD

I seriously dont understand why some of you guys are being such whiney bitches? This show is always showing football players doing hard hits and stuff, but say here that rugby is the most dabgerous team sport ever and you guys still bitch like girls, Injuries can occur in any sport and all they are showing is what can happen and how to prevent it. If they didnt do anything on rugby you bitches would cry about that also.
91gt306 3 months ago
This badly misconstrues how "dangerous" rugby is. There are FAR more soft-tissue injuries in American football than rugby, and tackles are more controlled in union than in football and league. This comes off like a pseudo-smear campaign.
z3r0326 4 months ago
If all members of the tight 5 are trained well and no-one tries to cheat the scrum isn't that dangerous. And rugby isn't as brutal as they made it out to be and a lot of the most brutal tackles shown were from league (the redneck sport)
Char1ie473 4 months ago
they should have used the All Blacks..

i support rugby league, but rugby leagues scrum is nothing compared to a rugby scrum.
JDWbuddy 4 months ago
@JDWbuddy bro, league used to have contested scrums, but they were too dangerous and the line is so messed up. Injuries occured in the scrums, that's why league banned contested scrums in the mid-90s.

Thats the uglyest scrum Ive ever seen

It's a team game. i'm a prop and you're number one job is to protect the hooker. You never abandon you're ooker like that.

I'm a a fly-half but would be rather p###ed at the loose-head prop if he did that in a game
Pat10310278 4 months ago
I've never seen a scrum collapse with such force! The other front row holds it up and it bends and folds a lot slower than that (been part of MANY of those as a player).

tskfromnzl 4 months ago
Again shitty rugby players but finnally they call a good ccoach.. but for what?
GoovyLiOn 5 months ago 2
Ok if you are a real hooker in rugby you would land nose first into the ground
I rather hav e a broken nose than be fucked over
And rugby has certain body positions to prevent the worst of accidents
DONGJIN95 5 months ago
@DONGJIN95 land knee first and use ur back slightly arched, stops your head hitting the ground as hard
reidy1012 4 months ago
Two of England's best front row players (Steve Thompson (hooker) and Jason Leonard (prop) have both had serious neck injuries but I have to thank the Americans for fixing Steves neck (i think it was steve) so he could play again
Dreadepic 5 months ago
Ive played rugby for 8 years, all 8 in front row 4 as loose head and 5 as hooker, have been in a fair few collapsed scrums, ways to avoid hurting your neck allow your feet to slide right off the groung so your knees hit first before your head
mohawkmohican 5 months ago
How many international players have broken their neck in a scrum though? Little or none and that's because they practice ways to protect themselves when the scrum collapses.
NZSuperCam 5 months ago
well, this is why we work religious on my body position so if the scrum collapses, we drop down on our upper body as a whole rather getting our necks rolled.
vinniechan 5 months ago
i not going to stop playing (I'm a prop)
hunter4210 5 months ago
These guys are pathetic. Try a scrum by South Africa or any other national rugby team
beaverfev 5 months ago 2
it also has teh biggest obesity problem - what's your point? Biggest certainly isn't best, is it. Shows like this prove it :)
blueray1969 5 months ago
I've only ever been involved in no more than 5 collapsed scrums in 11 years of playing. 7 years as hooker, got a bad injury from a collapsed scrum and shifted to loose head prop for the remaining 4 years.
Two things cause this. Bad ground or a prop pulling down the scrum when he is under pressure..
SeanHickey1986 5 months ago
The narrator is amazing - he can't even pronounce Wales and Australia properly. Why do so many American shows have these cheesy hyper-emotional voice-overs?
blueray1969 5 months ago
@blueray1969 To be more interesting. America has the biggest entertainment industry in the world, so I suggest you shut up and take notes, there's a reason why your country can't compete.

@Katazka He was only part of the USA eagles for about 3 months. He's been up and about but I wouldn't call him "legendary" like Sports Science suggests.
GiefGoldPlx 2 months ago
All that shit about Neck injuries is bollocks. Hookers nearly never get injured. You want to know why? They have over 40inch Necks. It's Impossible to Bend the head back when you have that much muscle.
BKsMassive 6 months ago
well yeah. if a scrum collapsed because the two props stepped out it would cause major spinal injury. and it would be all the props' fault. a hooker should never be in a situation to drop without the rest of the front row dropping as well. such a poorly made vid.
coops2403 6 months ago
their scrum was wrong! the locks were standing up when the hit was made. And those props look softer than a sponge

fokshill 7 months ago
That was such a negatively constructed video about rugby. They used the fact that the majority of people in America are poorly educated about the sport to promote viewers. Rugby has risk just like any other sport. Knowledge of the game is essential to minimizing injury, just as it would be in football or hockey. Since protective equipment is minimal, there is more focus on technique. E.g. Tackling with head up, to avoid the head-on-head tackle common in football, due to lack of helmet.

cool video and i play hooker for my club
MrRkennon 7 months ago
also as the hooker in red showed that most hooked stand with one leg in front and the other at the back which supports falling to the knee when it collapses, and surely the neck would only do that if the scrum kept moving forward when it collapses but they fold in on each other
chanik02 7 months ago
the thing is that most hookers will still have a foot on the ground or will be able to go down to a knee. i've played hooker in the past and when the scrum has collapsed i've never gone down straight on my head, sure i have hit my head on the ground but most of the energy was taken away by my legs so my neck was fine
chanik02 7 months ago
and the hooker usually falls on his knees first, so that takes quite a bit of the impact away.
kainoizking 7 months ago
what the hell. who are these overweight chumps? this is ugly scrummaging, you can tell these guys are super amateur. U wanna see a scrum. put the english scrum against the south african scrum. Meeeeean
kainoizking 7 months ago
@kainoizking Andrew Sheridan FTW
chanik02 7 months ago
When a scrum does go down the hooker doesnt really fall in the same way as the dummy does at 3:36, with the pressure from the opposing team it pushing the head of the hooker underneath his own neck. Its very rare that a hooker ends up faceplanted after a scrum collapse. not a very accurate test..
lardonirdesco 7 months ago
@KURISU187 Imagine having to do it 60-65 times in per game, against players who average 6ft6 145kg. Such is the life of a Gridiron Lineman.

Rugby is just football with no pads....shit we used to do this shit every sunday.....
WillDaboi 7 months ago
@WillDaboi Say that to the guy that died in my school playing rugby.. Rugby is ten times more physical than football, in rugby you are constantly hit, whether it is rucking, mauling, scrimmaging or tackling. In football you are hit 2-6 times a game with breaks in between plays to recover. So no, rugby is NOT just football without pads.
ScootezZ 7 months ago
@ScootezZ well i know the physicality of football i know what its like to get speared and have a helmet to helmet crash running full speed... so to me like i said i believe rugby to be no more than football with no pads...that scrum is just like a fumble pile u have no idea how many limbs i have seen break in those things...i maybe wrong but thats my opinion and u have the right to yours also
WillDaboi 6 months ago
@WillDaboi Yeah, suppose a scrum is like a fumble pile up but a fumble only occurs maybe once or twice a game, scrums occur on average 20 times a match! But yes football and rugby are the 2 most dangerous sports in my opinion and i have the utmost respect for those who play the sport.
ScootezZ 6 months ago
@ScootezZ as do i..its all respect

i play hooker. thanx, sports science, 4 scaring the living shit outa me
denvernegative0 8 months ago
@denvernegative0 It´s really hard to bend your neck like this video shows, mostly when scrum falls you land on your forhead. I´d say the second row is more expose since they can have all the first row land on their necks.
rudipell90 8 months ago
Neither of these sports are the most dangerous. Statistically, more people die playing bowls than any other sport. I want Sports Science to do an experiment on bowls!
tomnottim 8 months ago
thats a pretty shit job being head coach OF AMERICA. not the head coach part but the american rugby team is shit our under 21's could trash them
lkj802 8 months ago
any one can get hit at any given moment in football, and the pads hurt more they are like wepaons. every rugby player at my school says football hurts more and is tougher. but hey we all got our own opinions, am i right
