You don't have to declare your love directly for the lizard lovers (even though that happened both for rumi and hafez who were so taken by mutannabi and his poetry).
THe ghazal tradition says that love is declared in a very sweet and subtle way. When you lift entire arabic prose verses left and right from arab poets and inject it into your poetry (unlike ferdowsi who tried but failed to avoid arabic) that means you're a sucker for arab culture not a hater of the "lizard eater".
