I learned very young to not keep food with me when in bear country as black bears will attack for food; this wonderful, well-meaning man reinforced this behaviour in these bears. There are some excellent books that speak of bears in a realistic light ... people who have given their lives to study their habits - some of whom have, in spite of their massive knowledge, been killed by those very bears as they slept.

Grizzlies are more likely to attack without provocation, but black bears will do so as well. 5 black bears attacked a group of girls I know a few years ago, unfortunately not out of fear or a feeling of being threatened. It was an attack.

@leslucas It was the niece of a friend who works with the RCMP in Kelowna. I don't believe a formal process was initiated, but they did speak with the Conservation Office who apparently had previous knowledge of this group of bears. I'm not certain but believe the incident occurred in the late spring to early summer in the Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park.
This film does raise some very interesting aspects. It is lovely to see a man able to win over the bears and get along with them so very well, however, there is indeed danger along with it. Those bears now appear to have lost their innate fear of humans and look to humans as a source of food. This does increase their danger as this may cause these bears to be a greater threat to some innocent human in the future.

@darmokandgalad Because it screws up the bears natural instinct to fear humans and conditions them to associate humans with food.The guy is like Timothy Treadwell a disgrace portraying himself as some kind of advocate for bruins,when in fact they are only doing harm.As a life long outdoors person in the Pacific Northwest not a year goes by I don't see or encounter black bear in there true natural state.They are to be respected and given their space.But not cuddled or feared.

I learned very young to not keep food with me when in bear country as black bears will attack for food; this wonderful, well-meaning man reinforced this behaviour in these bears. There are some excellent books that speak of bears in a realistic light ... people who have given their lives to study their habits - some of whom have, in spite of their massive knowledge, been killed by those very bears as they slept.

SaveTheBearsCampaign your idealism is wonderful but terribly uninformed. I have worked in the wild, been stalked by a grizzly and lived to tell about it - as do many, but others are not so fortunate. Grizzlies are more likely to attack without provocation, but black bears will do so as well. 5 black bears attacked a group of girls I know a few years ago, unfortunately not out of fear or a feeling of being threatened. It was an attack.

@leslucas It was the niece of a friend who works with the RCMP in Kelowna. I don't believe a formal process was initiated, but they did speak with the Conservation Office who apparently had previous knowledge of this group of bears. I'm not certain but believe the incident occurred in the late spring to early summer in the Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park.

This film does raise some very interesting aspects. It is lovely to see a man able to win over the bears and get along with them so very well, however, there is indeed danger along with it. Those bears now appear to have lost their innate fear of humans and look to humans as a source of food. This does increase their danger as this may cause these bears to be a greater threat to some innocent human in the future.

I also think black bears are beautiful animals, but you gotta draw the line at feeding them! When you start feeding wild animals you are messing up the natural food chain so it not affects the bears, it affect all the animals under the bear in the food chain..

Black bears have been portrayed through the media - wrongly. They are not all 'vicious' and 'agressive.' They only attack out of fear, that is a fact.
It shows a man doing something he loves, what's wrong with that? It helps with scientific research and behavioural patterns can be studied much clearer.
When i'm older, I will look after the welfare for bears across the world, and study their behavioural patters. I'm 14, and I promise that bear hunting will be illegal by the time i'm 30. Promise.

Good for you we need more people like you in our world darling , I also love bears...I went to the cottage for the week and when I go I go straight to the dump to spend it with the bears because thats what I love and you should always do what you love, I have a video on here that I took at the garbage dump where the poor bears eat it's so sad. I think what Charlies doing is amazing!!

I promise not to kill them all, and I will only kill the ones I am going to eat, like I do every year. The bears that need the most help now are the poor ones caged up in China or Russia, where they sell their parts. Now that is terrible ! Save those bears.
