I felt Obama's tax and foreign policy positions as well as temperamental qualifications are so superior to McCain's it didn't matter to me what Bill Ayer's state of violence was, but this really clarifies for me how much "Bill Ayers is a terrorist" was a piece of NYTimes sensationalism.

Please notice that Ayers *shows no regret* fof his violent actions- even when he attacks the reporter for misleading. Maybe she did give a misleading quote, but the fact is Ayers thinks the attempt to fight communism in Vietnam (which was handled badly, no doubt) was worse than his own *domestic terrorism*. That's troubling to me. Ayers may be a far more complex man the the demon some people try to portrtay, but he is no saint either. And he was a terrorist.

You're right. He was complex. Not a saint. He committed acts of terrorism in the past -- but I'm not sure that makes him a terrorIST, which would mean an essential part of his identity. The difference isn't trivial. And it depends whether or not you believe in redemption or recuperation.

Second, I don't know if there is any way to actually measure whether Vietnam or Ayers' violence is worse. Seems like a misguided comparison.

Last, he DOES regret his violence. Listen more closely.

Did you know that the Bill Ayers and the Weather Underground went out of their way to make sure that NO ONE WAS HARMED by their largely symbolic acts?? Obama has explained what change means as well as any politician - and then some. It certainly means a new tax system; a new attitude toward diplomacy; an end to the culture war...
