I think the USAF should have developped an F16 derivative, based on the F16XL, with AESA, FLIR, 3D thurst vectoring, the F120 engine, maybe the proposed stealthy inlet, and CFTs. Instead of the F22, the F23 and an FB23 derivative. The F35 should be cancelled and renamed the A35 or better the WTF35. Just my two cents...

The simple truth is that you can always find idiots to say anything about anything out there. Common sense should tell anyone that F-35 must be an awesome plane being build on the same pattern as F-22 Raptor by the same people 20 years later with an even more advance technology and features. We should not forget that US is the only one that is building stealthy planes for over 30 years now. And F-35 IS the most important millitary project in US history. ;)

As I followed the development of the F22 I always asked myself why we stuck with a generation behind plane in Europe - the Eurofighter. Now that the F22 basically failed and the F35 is about to while Russia and China go on with 4th generation inovations I think it has become clear that 5th generation is still sience fiction and not ready for the real world soon.

@Soonerg2121 The US defense industry, and indeed most things about America, were great right up until 2000 when Bush took over...ever since then pretty much everything's taken a trainride for the worst.

The navy was at its best, with the F-14, F-18, prowler and E-2 hawkeye all complimenting each other to create the best navy ever devised by man, and the air force was at its best, with an extensive fleet of tried and tested legacy fighters.

That's all being threatened right now...

@Spjungen I would feel really bad for our boys and girls flying the F22, F35 against the SU27,30,35, and the Mig29SMT.Plus the Russians till this day don't believe in price tags when it comes to production for these combat Jets. They will just shell them out through production lines because their ideology is? make it fly and go. Also while our jets are on the ground on maintenance their jets will be still buzzing around heading towards our air bases knocking us out for good.

@TaskMasterZodi Diefenbaker destroyed the Arrow program and the AVRO for cheaper U.S. missile defense system. Unfortunately, later the defense ministry discovered that the system has cost more than the Arrow program. And at that time, surface-to-air missile technology was not so reliable as today.

@TaskMasterZodi The Arrow was not an air superiority fighter you idiot. It is a bomber interceptor. It was not conceived to take on other fighter jets other than in a very limited role. The Arrow would have not been the greatest fighter that ever existed as it was not a fighter. There were other aircraft at the same time that could fill interceptor role better than the Arrow like the F106, F-4 and others and had better fighter capability.

Many people are predicting the f-35 price will go up alot more yet. It isd allready at $150 million per copy, some are saying 200 million, some even 250 million plus, which would be verty shocking considering they cancelled the f-22 to build the F-35 to reduce the costs.

@BELAIR2000 I do not think that the idea was to reduce the price tag, they knew that F22 was a doomed project due to problems and price so they came with similar concept that would be as bad and costly but they involved everyone in the building so it will be hard to make people accountable later. It looks to me that the concept behind is not to make something good an cheap to maintain but to sell at the highest price. Sprey has s solid reputation and he is honest in his opinion.

@BELAIR2000 What's more with the F-22 you get what you pay for; the very best of the best. They're still having issues with economy though and the biggest problem is it's too expensive to maintain. Nevermind the upfront cost; when you can't fly the damn thing and train your pilots in it, that's when you've got a problem. BUT, at least the rest of the fleet of legacy fighters is still intact, with a few costly but elite F-22's.
