  • Jammed spindle motor

  • Why does the head even move at all? Doesn't the platters get damaged more?

  • common for a crapstor... maxtor was never known to be reliable.. stuck spindle.. stay away from maxtor and get a WDC.....

  • maxtor famous click of death FTW

    How to fix?

    BUY A WESTERN DIGITAL!

  • the sound is resonance made by the motor itself, by a signal sent to motor by a hard disk board's microcontroller when there's a severe hardware problem that means: "hey this disk is fucked up".

  • Maybe it has internal speaker?

  • Ha Ha the Craptor Dies!!!!!

  • Your Drive Has Head Damage

  • where does that sound comes from?? those beeps and that scratching noise>> it doesnt even spin!

  • @foelde Good question, I don't know :( The head itself can be moved by hand, but impossible to turn the plates using hand, the motor looks broken from the inside...

  • Probably

i wonder most harddrives break thanks to headers and plates

can a solid state disk break?? and if yes how??

    (another good question? ) XD

  • yes ssd can still fail transistors fail over time but ssd is much faster that a hdd and will give much longer life

  • @poussin78640 no you have to turn it really hard its stuck but it looks working other than that try it out

  • @poussin78640 i think that the beeping is comming from the stepper motor

but it can also be an head crash and the needle is stuck in a scratch

  • @foelde the all so dreaded maxtor music.

  • Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 - Those particular brand of Maxtors are prone to the common symptom known as "Musical Maxtor". I hear that the reader heads get stuck to the platter but in this case the platters have seized up on their own. Have you dropped it at any stage? This can cause the dreaded music :(

  • And, of course, it's not good at all if the floaters are skating out of the landing zone and across the platters when they have not spun up to speed.

The skating across will cause physical damage to the platters, so there's definite data loss.

  • I have the exact same thing here since one of my cats knocked an external hd of my desk :( . I've read things like knocking the sides with a rubber hammer or use a frisbee throw motion to shake it loose. Any more tips would be greatly appreciated as I'd like to retrieve some data!

    cheers

  • You'd have to get the spindle up and running again somehow, assuming that the motor is even getting power and its problem with spinning is caused by some kind of mechanical obstruction that can be cleared.
