These are interesting! A traditional German cookie (the anise) in the French shape (fleur de lis) from New Mexico. I guess North America really is a melting pot.
@audionautix Lard is just another form of fat, it makes the cookies very flaky and tender. Lard doesn't taste much different from cookies made with shortening. My favourite cookie is still made with good old butter.
@silverscreamgrl I made a dessert a while back with leftover lard-based pastry that you sprinkled with cinnamon and brown sugar, these tasted a lot like those.
I listen to my audiobooks a lot! I'm almost disappointed that my drive to work is only half an hour, sometimes I sit in the parking lot for a few minutes if I'm a good spot.
I can't listen at work though, I have to answer the damn phone too often.
@AcemanJones Glad you enjoyed the recipe. You are right about the pronunciation, but I'm not re-editing this video to make it right, people will just have to cope somehow. ;)
I love lard!

@lucasuk82 Very interesting how these traditions develop :)

@lucasuk82 not really it was mostly made and influenced by Spanish and Hispanics in NM

Anise is what liquorish gets it's flavor from; not a liquorish flavored seed.
blow230 9 months ago
@blow230 The seeds taste like licorice, I was just describing the flavour to people who would have never tried them before.

Awesome video. Only two states have claimed a state cookie; Massachusetts and New Mexico!

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced [aN'-is], not [a-NEES']. Check on dictionary com.
