@DonnovanDavis That was kinda my point. If the characters were the sort to constantly make bowling references, which these were, Barry Asher would've been a focal point... but he wasn't. There are the beer drinkers that bowl socially and then there are bowlers who will have a beer. These two types are distinctly different. A drinker that bowls isn't competitive, a bowler who drinks (a sad cliche) would know who Barry Asher is.

Well, yeah... the bowling culture IS the setting. The main characters were PRIMARILY bowlers, making constant bowling references throughout their daily dialogue. So yeah, maybe I was expecting the obvious when the writers didn't understand the obvious.

Not to be argumentative, but the bowling aspect of the film seems to me to be more in the background. I bowl quite often, but I don't quote random bowling factoids. It's more or less something I like to do to chill. Even when my friends and I were on the league, we never referenced the PBA because none of us really cared much. We just loved to bowl. Sort of the way the old sitcom "Cheers" didn't go out of its way to include factoids about alcohol

Barry Asher 7:57 won eight PBA titles in five years, two more a few years later before retiring. He also held the PBA record high average that lasted for twelve years, well into the 80's. Had the characters truly been bowlers, Barry Asher would've been a constant reference in their scripted dialogue. Oh well, another bowling movie made by non-bowlers... but still, with the price of tickets these days a little authenticity would be nice.
