He lost his balance, but there's no doubt he acted too. However most players in the NHL would do the same to get a call, it's not just an Ovechkin thing.
Alex lost his balance, that's all. He sure traveled a long way across the ice ... which brings me to my point:
During a dive a player has complete control over his actions and of his body. How he falls down and lands (typically forward or sideways), and when he gets back up are all deliberate, calculated moves.
Alex fell backward and sailed a good distance on his butt, and at a pretty good clip. Momentum was in control; not him ... and he didn't get up until he slowed down enough to do so.
Okay there was a hold on Ovy even tough it was very little.
The holding penalty is okay.
Now to the Dive. It was for sure a dive. With that little hold you do not lose you balance that hard. He´s a great skater and such a little touch won´t make him lose his balance.
to ov's defense. he could have lost an edge, but the way he falls make it seem like a dive. i understand both being called but i personally wouldnt have made a call at all, it was a clean hit and ov just lost an edge.....no call either way.

I've been following Ovechkin's career in the NHL pretty closely since the beginning, and he is really a very honest player when it comes to diving or embellishing, almost always choosing to fight through checks, hooks, and holds vs trying to draw a penalty. But this was one terrible and embarrassing dive. Probably the dive of the year.
If this was lapierre there would only be a diving penalty and no matching minor. I swear I don't think i've ever seen only the dive called unless it's lapierre

Alex lost his balance, that's all. He sure traveled a long way across the ice ... which brings me to my point:
During a dive a player has complete control over his actions and of his body. How he falls down and lands (typically forward or sideways), and when he gets back up are all deliberate, calculated moves.
Alex fell backward and sailed a good distance on his butt, and at a pretty good clip. Momentum was in control; not him ... and he didn't get up until he slowed down enough to do so.

Okay there was a hold on Ovy even tough it was very little.
The holding penalty is okay.
Now to the Dive. It was for sure a dive. With that little hold you do not lose you balance that hard. He´s a great skater and such a little touch won´t make him lose his balance.

to ov's defense. he could have lost an edge, but the way he falls make it seem like a dive. i understand both being called but i personally wouldnt have made a call at all, it was a clean hit and ov just lost an edge.....no call either way.

How can a dive be worse than that. Seriously, he has a forward lean during his whine up since he is doing crossovers and feels the defenders hand on him and goes from leaning forward to being almost flat, parallel to the ice. And even spreads his legs and flares them vertically up. Btw he is the strongest athlete in pro hockey... and Crosby haters lost all their creditibility if you say Ovi didn't dive that badly.

I've been following Ovechkin's career in the NHL pretty closely since the beginning, and he is really a very honest player when it comes to diving or embellishing, almost always choosing to fight through checks, hooks, and holds vs trying to draw a penalty. But this was one terrible and embarrassing dive. Probably the dive of the year.
