The basis for this show's success is "nostalgia"--a phenomenon experienced and yearned for by the citizens of all great nations in decline. Just as Europe had its nostalgia period so now is the U.S. No one would care about this old stuff if it was still being made today in a country where everything of quality was once made. But now that we no longer make anything here, everyone is out hunting for the old stuff that reminds us of the days when we were great--or No. 1.
These guys actually rescue things that otherwise would have been discarded once these people died because their family neither want or appreciate these things. Scammers , thieves - no way.
@CrocoDuck420 They do not scam people. They need to make money themselves. And the projected amount that they think they will make. In an article, Mike said that they made a lot less than they thought they would in the first few epsiodes.
they dont rip people off !! a lot of things they buy the people don't even know they have !! these hoarder have stuff all over some stuff they rescue it rusting in to the ground , its a business they have to pay for gas and travel , so if ones in a while if they make a big profit off a item thats the name of the game but there a lot of times u find nothing and people think everything is worth a lot and they give you these ridicioulous prices !!
they buy forgotten stuff rotting in barns. Sometimes they do well, other times they get burned. They spend money on advertising, maintaining a vehicle, gas, hotel, food, employee, warehouse, shop and office, restoration, etc. then they have to make a profit. they buy something for 50, and sell for 150...but how long does it sit before it sells?...after all the expenses and time driving around seems a tough way to make a buck.
When they ask someone how much they want for something, and the person throws a price out there, and they counter offer the person more than their asking price, how is that ripping someone off?
Example: In one episode in season 1, they visit a teenage picker. He offers them $15 or so for a Coca Cola clock. They counter offer and pay him about $50-$70.
Tell me how you can rip someone off by paying what THE SELLER offers as a price, or paying more than their offer.
@SeberHusky Agreed. I think they are actually really kind to people. Remember the episode where they were helping a family to give them an idea of what things would be worth and they didn't buy everything they could have simply because they wanted the family's sale to have some appeal. There are also times Mike and Frank offer higher prices than initially offered, as you said. I completely agree with you. I absolutely love the show and I think people give them too much of a hard time.
my father in law is better at picking then any man i have met. but he is what is called a jockey. he'll chew the price down at walmart..........seriously
well you have to study this stuff you just don't learn what you can make a buck on in one day. I been studying this picking stuff for 6 years and I still lean some thing new every day. . best thing I can tell you is study it, learn it, and make money...
Frank likes to use the tactic that he is just buying something for his collection Its just a little tin thing I will put on my shelf , he tells his victim. He knows damn well he will flip that 300.00 vintage tin that he paid 2.00 dollars for the minute he is around the corner. Waving and smiling as he pulls away from the 90 year old farmer he left sitting in his wheelchair on the front lawn. Saving Americas treasures my ass!
Or, on the other hand these elderly people can hord all of this stuff in their garages and barns until the day they die, then we will see family members come rolling in who hadnt visited them in 20 years wanting something for nothing.
Pretty sad when ripping off the elderly and the unsophisticated is entertainment. Mike is sickening sweet as he sucks up to his mark. Mike is always pretending to be their best friend with the sole intention to take advantage of them. They disparage the person when they do not cooperate. It is funny to see how excited they get when they hear that there next lead is at the home of a senior citizen. Saving Americas treasures my ass!
They ought to re-name this stupid series "Antiquing for the straight guy". How many times are they going to show these 2 schmucks finding a rusted bike, a scrap from an old Harley, or old sign in some back-road redneck's barn or garage. Who the hell cares. Come on History channel, you got to do better than this!
It's one thing to buy a hidden treasure from a dealer or someone at a flea market. It's another when you sweet talk your way into an elderly persons home and pay them pennies on the dollar for their things. This part of the show was a real turn off for me.
Business is just that. It's not like their stealing from them or taking things they need to live. They are taking stuff most people forgot they had, or don't really care about. If someone really want to keep something, they will.
I understand they are trying to make a profit, but come on!!!! They ripped that WWII vet off!! Pawn Stars is a much better show, at least they bring in outside advice to determine the value of an item.
These 2 pricks take advantage of the elderly they pay shit for items worth thousands I wish they would show up in my yard I'd show them 2 barrels of a shotgun and a foot up there ass
why does this have an A&E logo on it?
