All of the videos on the channel so far were experimental. This one told me a lot. I'm doing a lot of video production right now, and I've got several more things going up on Youtube soon, so please check back.
I'm not trying to entertain you, I'm trying to teach you to improvize, so *you* can get a paying job as a guitar player, and entertain people - like I do. My job is anything but boring. How about yours?
how do you know which scale to use if you know all the scales but dont know the key that the song is in how do you find out the key and then which scale to improvise over it?
the key of the song is usually the first chord played in the rythem, if the first chord of the progression is A minor then you would want to use A minor pentatonic,A natural minor(aeolion mode), or A dorian or A phrygian mode, sometimes not all will sound good, you have to experiment a little bit
No, you have to use a major scale, meaning A major pentatonic which is the same patterns as A minor just moved down four frets to the F# , or a u can use a mixolydian, ionian, or any of your other major modes.
In my opinion you can still use the minor pentatonic. Sure it is not the best choice every time, but you can still play it. Normally the song sounds more like rock then.
But in most cases it will sound better, if you combinate the minor and major third then (In the key of A: C and C sharp)
agreed i like to altrernate over a major progreesion back and forth between the major and minor pentatonics and also throwing mixolydian and major scale notes in there. Gives you alot more ideas and notes to work with : )
i have gotten so many tips for improvising with scale, but when i try, it just sounds like shit, i play some random notes, and its just boring, sometimes i wonder if im rlly ment to have something to do with an instrument at all!!
I explained at the beginning that this example is based on the pentatonic, and includes passing tones (shown in the next frame). I admit I also used notes 'not' included in the list of passing tones. Sorry for the confusion.
This video is a demonstration of different note-orders in one scale position. It's played with all 8th notes, with a short section at the end to demonstrate how those same note orders sound played as 16ths. The note orders shown are common to many guitar leads in all different styles, and are a mix of stepwise motion and arpeggios. I'm planning to do more of these soon. (Hurricane and everything) I'm glad that people who are looking for good note order examples find this helpful.
Actually. this is one of the best lessons i have seen to illustrate improvisation!! theres no easy way to explain it cos it comes from the individual, but this is a great way to show how to go about it! great stuff thanx!
Excellent material. Very instructive on how to play functional. Notes are related to each other and improvising is about building and releasing tension. That is more than running up an down a scale. After understanding how to play meaningful phrases you can play with real soul. Thanks for posting.
really nice lesson, but its a lil difficult to REALIZE wich notes u are playing..

What if the key is A major? Can you still use A minor pentatonic?

Oysy, I know exactly what you mean. It all changed for me when I stopped doing pentatonic scales and started doing major scales. Try it.

I find this confusing because it says all notes played are in the scale, and there not. Or so it looks like that to me.

i cannot explain how much you have helped me,
those passing notes hold so much feeling, without them it would sound so bland and emotionless.
thankyou

You miss the point. If you understand what the Pentatonic scale is, you see it's entirely based off of it.
