Are the north and south seriously still bitching about each other? how long has it been?...I'm Danish, Denmark and Sweden hold the world record for most wars fought between two countries (and we're like siblings) and yet we got over it....so...get over it, you all live in the same bloody country ;)
im a yank, was born a yank, and reenact as a yank. and until now i thought that the bars and stars were racist but theyre not. theyre for states' rights and civil liberties. I usually support rebels against restrictive governments but i just despise slavery. though the south is still to be honored
The problem is that so many folks confuse the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia with the Confederate Flag. They were never one and the same, though the Battle Flag was used as the canton on the Stainless Banner. I have no problems with people flying the Confederate Flag--but big problems with the Battle Flag, which is the one used by the KKK.
States rights are one thing..but at the time the states wanted the right to their free (slave) labor. So at the time that flag represented something evil. If someone where to fly it today, you'd have to ask them what they mean by it... I'd avoid the mess and just not fly it at all.
people seem to forget that slavery was never brought up until about 1863. Sure it was one of the points that made the south revolt, but it wasn't the main one. Some of the values of the South were screwed up, that's both for sure and why they lost. But they almost won.
I love it how people can say that one faction is good and the other bad. Both sides did some fucked up things but guess what........the war's over! So stop acting like it ended yesterday.
The flag is a representation of cohesion. As are 'gang' colors or those worn by football fans.
However, and vitally important, symbology carries net value.
For example, the 'nazi' symbol or 'swastika' is a Sanskrit term/symbol for good luck. In India it is still used as such, but is commonly reviled worldwide.
And thusly, no matter how the south (and I am a southerner by birth) wishes it to be seen as something other than a symbol for slavery, it can't be.
nope..and actually they were both good just defferent expactations of Government..if the south would have won we would be independant states and whatever property we buy we own without paying taxes..the south was for local governing as the north was for total control. The blacks were used in the war so that the south would use up amo killing them leaving the whites fresh and loaded..so any black that lived did get his freadom..We are all so used by GOV daily for thier greed.
nope, the North was running. please learn some more civil war history, the north, since they won branded the south as evil and villianous. I am not saying your ignorant or stupid or anything, so if I offended you, I am sorry, I just needed to say
This video's named "civil war in film" and only show confederate victories. I wouldn't be that biased and narrow-minded if I were the videomaker. I would show confederate victories and those of the federals also.
Worldbattle is right? Evaluate your own argument. There's a tremendous difference in saying "Federal victories were fewer than those of the Confederates" and "the Federals rarely won a battle". The latter is true if the Federals won less than, say, tenth of the total battles won by confederates. The truth, is, this is sadly incorrect as the federals won the war. It's true that the confederates held the advantage in the beginning of the war, but worldbattle is simply wrong.
worldbattle- My best advice to you is "come back after doing some research on the war." This video is claimed to be "Civil War in Film", but it is actually a shallow propaganda video that lacks depth. Why does it ignore the famous civil war movie, Gettysburg? Because it is this "Self-styled" civil war video is too biased to show anything other than confederate victories. People who don't know about Civil War would think the war wasn't won by Federals. This is called "implicit propaganda".
I don't know why people say the South will rise again. From my perspective it's always been it's own country (Shit, it's economy is different from the rest of the country). When I went to Arkansas last summer I saw a lot of people fly the bars and stars at their homes (And for everyone that sais it's racist, it's not. I saw tons of Black people with it on their cars also).
regardless of whether Southerners were racists, they still disobeyed to the government and rebelled against it. (I'm not gonna embarrass them too much by talking about slaves too) I simply don't get it. America could be a stronger country if there weren't people who keep saying "South will rise again and tear the country apart". (I'm not American by the way) still, there are southerners who try to make Lincoln look like infamous dictators like Stalin, (What's the point?)
Then you obviously wouldn't understand that only 15% of blacks in the South at that time were actually slaves - a lot of blacks OWNED slaves and the rest were employed by other property owners and paid. I doubt that you'd know anything about Lincoln either, he was greedy - he had the funds to buy the miniscule amount of Black slaves from the South, but instead decided to go to war and kill 600,000 Americans. Ironically, the first slave ports were also opened in the northern state Massachusetts.
Don't presume to assume I don't know anything about Lincoln. If I didn't even know Lincoln, I wouldn't be adding comments to this kind of videos. There was no significant opposition to slavery long before the war, so, it's not surprising that first slaves ports opened in Massachussets. Read my comment properly, I'm only asking WHY do some Southerners say "the south will rise again?" Lincoln wanted to restore the union and never wanted to punish the southern states for rebelling.
Oranges- I agree that slavery was not the only reason. But, when the government tells the people to free slaves, it never means it will buy them. Actually, it was the south who actually attacked first. (Fort Sumter) There's no evidence for the argument that "Lincoln decided to go to war and started it". Going to war costs far more than buying slaves, Lincoln was greedy? I don't understand your argument.
I sure hope nothing like this ever happens again. History ,unfortunately, I guarantee WILL repeat itself. I'm not for an "Uprising" or anything, I just hope when it happens i won't be alive and it won't be as bad the first time. "History repeats itself because we didn't listen the first time"
Welcome to my world. The AOP wins one single battle (Gettysburg) and a huge movie on it. Lee wins many battles and little is even mentioned about it. Here with Gods and Generals, finally shows the South won a battle. As if Lee never had.
i agree, the union was beat a lot. but as a Civil War Re-enactor myself I blame our commanders (both past and modern day). And a side note, at the re-enactment of Chancellorsville they actually surprised us in our camp once, hell they stole some hot dogs we we're cookin on the camp fire! Oh but you can bet we ran like hell, that rebel yell puts this type of fear in ya that just makes you wanna run. (by the way I'm a northern re-enactor, and an American if my name threw you off)
union got raped in alot of battles. the south gave em a good fight, even though the south didnt have much supplies. the union clearly underestimated the south's determination to fight for their heritage.
Jackson took 28,000 on his flank attack on the 11th Corps. This left Lee with 16,000 men in front of Hooker's army. Early's division faced off against the 6th Corps and Gibbon's men. The Union army at Chancellorsville was the largest army ever in the Western Hemisphere. (130,000)
it was only a matter of time until the south lost even with all these victories.. with thier smaller armies and larger casualty ratios thier armies would evantually disentergrate.
ya on paper the north suffered more losses..but in terms of percentages the north lost less of thier total army due to its sheer size in numbers. the south losing less had much smaller armies. when it was all said and done the north lost around 29-30% of its total army..the south lost 37-38% of its total army. north had all the populated cities which shifted the balance of power to them in the long run.
okay let me explain something to every commentator on the confederate flag: IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RACISM OR SEGREGATION!!!
the only reason people keep saying that is because the Ku Klux Klan used it. The flag is supposed to symbolize states' rights and the right to private property. and yes I'm from Ohio so this is an unbiased view

It represents the idea that the states have rights to preserve slavery as an institution (which, of course, they don't). Also, that private property you're talking about, humans are not, and should never be classified as "private property."
I'm from Ohio as well, but I don't have any unfounded romantic ideals about the South, or what it fought (and, lets not forget, LOST) for.
