is it voltage or current that separates the hydrogen from the water? If voltage would stepping up the voltage (example stepping it up to about 1k volts) make the hydrogen separate at a faster rate?

Glas being the more dangerous of tanks i guess, LOL, but you are rite to say only use nuts & bolts & stainless for fixings, avoid coppers putty and wires, how true, can i ask you, how much gas "Volume" you need when getting a torch to work safely ?. keeping up a good flow being important to avoid flash backs !, thanks.
I'm amazed by the number of "HHO explosion" videos, how many idiots are using glass containers and no shielding. Even people who make potato cannons take better precautions.
Mixture is in fact lighter than air, more than by factor of 2 . Try filling a big soap bubble with it. Or try calculating one mol of any gas has volume about 24 liters. 2 mol of H2 and 1 mol of O2 have volume about 3*24=72 liters and weight 2*2+16 = 20 grams. 3 mols of nitrogen also have volume 72 liters but weight 14*3=42 grams. Air is a bit heavier than nitrogen.
wait actually I botched the calculation a bit... it should be 2*2+16*2 = 36 and 14*6 = 84 grams respectively (forgot to multiply by 2 atoms per molecule at places). I've made an electrolyzer like this a long ago (before the time of cheap cameras ;-) ).
Oh, man! This was step by step what happened to me when I was 14. I was saying "don't do it, don't do it" all thru the video. I used the jar upside down in a fish bowl. Thought I was going to make a little torch. Ended up bouncing the jar off of the ceiling! ...and it broke the fish bowl :(
Do yourself a favor and don't play with acetyline either! (but if you do, hope your neighbors will know to call an ambulance because you won't be able to use a phone with no eardrums)
I did this with a huge pickle jar and purposley blew it up, we all wore plexi glass face sheilds(u know for weed whippin and chainsawing) and held garbage can lids and stood 20 feet away and lit the trail of gas to it, man it was awsome :D but I ahted cleaning it up
Dude you could have lost an eye or God forbid that glass hit an artery or vein you would have bled out in the garage and your wife would have had to post the video.Damnit man, use a bubbler and plastic bottles!
You are sure one lucky man. As soon as I saw the heading of the vid and the glass jar I thought here comes trouble. At least you lived to learn from your mistake. I am building an hho welder and should it explode it will probily kill me.
hahahaha that happent to me once it scared the shit out of me and it was actually a plastic bottle and i was holding it at the time SO USSE PLASTIC FOR THIS EXPERIMENT
To be honest, If i was going to light the bubbles.. I'd have an actual bubbler attacked first, that way the flamewall hits the water in the bubbler, and doesnt hurt the cell...
also one more thing, try keeping the bobble as far away from the generator as possible in case of a big back fire and next try not to burn a whole through the hole please, thanks and be safe...
my guesses are that while popping the gas, your torch must have burned the hose and therefore a back fire occurred!!! that is the must funniest thing a person can ever do when they are first timers on hho.. i tell yah, my first time exploded in front of my face and it was crazy.. so yeah, hahaha, that'll teach first timers to never try that again!!!! lol
also on top of that do not use wires even if they are very well sealed.. you gotta use solid pieces of stainless steel all the way to the top. The seal will get screwed up and copper will "melt" off and this will happen again.
@Triple88a nope, lot of these kinada cells are safe, because thats the only thing that can happen, a cap blows off, there's only a low volume in the head of the container, or what should have been water to the top to minimize thew space for the hho. thats why dry cells cant possibly do that, there to far under water.
Flash back arrestor, you can buy it at ebay item number:250259467598 or eliminategas(dotcom or search ebay for :"Hydrogen Fuel Cell Back Flash Arrestor Valve"
This is what I think what has happened. The silicon sealant ontop of the platic cell was not really good enough and you have leakage. Hydrogen gas is highly diffusive and your torch caught it.
i hsd the same thing happen the cell have to be sealed really well cos there some pressure in there when using a small nozzel for blow torches not sure its a prob with a larger pipe for say running a car
i agree ... OUCH !!! what happened ??? did you touch your torch to the ouput hose and burn through it ??? you are lucky was a VERY small amount of gas ...

I see that the Hydrogen shot back up in the Jar. lol .. Directional Flow Valve are very important. .
Just u wait until you see what I'm designing. . WOO! baby. Make that look like an a baby just burping up some breast milk. lol.

why did it explode?
did to much pressure build up because of the cap?

yeah KIDS wear your safety goggles so the next time when you play with your propane torch around a large explosive gas chamber
they can at least donate your eyes to science because none of the rest of you will be usable

Is that HHO mixture lighter than air? Would it fly if I filled a garbage bag?

No it would not fly.

Yes, hydrogen is lighter than air. This is what was used in the Hindenburg.

1:49 (explosion)
for sure this would blow. the exit of the gas was too tight, and generates too much pressure.
But it was only an expanding gas explosion, not a blast, that is far more dangerous, HHO is a lot more instable with heat than gasoline is.
Pure hydrogen is even worst.
