  • Lol just cause 2 style

  • This is my dad's Piper Cub and our family airstrip in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This incredible story of outreach to the Auca tribe is one for everyone to check out!

The pilot in this "bucket drop" video was to have performed to half a million spectators at the Experimental Aircraft Assoc. AirVenture Fly-In in Oshkosh a couple summers ago, however the time allotted was not enough. He moved the performance out to our family farm/airstrip.

Thanks for video taping this feat!

  • Hey do you know how long the rope they used was? Read the book a long time ago, I'm wondering about the physics behind this.

  • @njdeputter

If you turn the plane around fast enough (this is a cub, so it is easily possible) you can loop the rope around itself and if the turn is made fast enough through 360 degrees the bucket will hover. It takes a load of skill to get the altitude, speed and turn rate right for this.

  • @mckseal Hmmm I was thinking of trying it with a person, maybe not...

  • I can't remember all the details, but a long time back my father desribed a feat of two pilots in a J3 that stayed aloft for about a week if I remember correctly. ...cont'd

  • Cont'd

They had a running-board built on side of the plane to pour gas in the tank and to add oil. They dropped the bucket to retrieve gas, oil and food and they would take turns napping. I can't remember what time period it was but had to be back somewhere between 1930'-1950. My father told me this story more than 30 years ago. Nice seeing this bucket drop done, first time I've actually seen it done.

  • This is sweet! I'm reading "Jungle Pilot" right now and the opening chapter describes Nate Saint doing this. It's awesome to be able to see it done. I have a friend who flys for Mission Aviation Fellowship. I'll have to see if he's tried this :-)

  • Awesome. Thats pretty cool. I saw the movie End of the Spear and the documentary, Beyond the gates of splendor and it was moving.
