  • I know the book well and still the thought the movie was absolutely amazing, it couldn't have been a better adaptation.

  • I liked the end of the comic book alot more too, cause it got the message of the story accross better. Mankind needs to understand that there is an entire universe full of life and wonder surrounding the world and we'll never go further then that if we constantly fight amongst ourselves. Life is just a fucking joke if we cant improve life itself. Watchmen is one of my new favorite stories.

  • The ending did make sense Pete.

  • We felt the exact same way about that you guys did. Good review!

  • I read the book five years ago, and I just watched the movie last night. I agree with Alex, the ending works for the movie. It was better than I thought it was going to be. It was good, not great.

  • The movie was great...especially if you like superhero porn. But half way through, I was finished having to look at Dr Manhattan's package. Somebody remind this guy that he can save the world with pants on.

  • LOLZ but Dr. Manhattan is still cool

  • @TalesFromTheBooth You obviously didn;t read the book, and don't understand Dr Manhattan at all...

  • @enaler1001 ...eh, I skimmed thru the graphic novel. And I understand the basic concept of the doctor becoming "god-like" ...but its my personal preference to have more action/adventure and less sex accompanying my superhero experience.

  • @TalesFromTheBooth there was only like 2 minutes worth of sex...in 3 hour movie....a movie thats rated R.

  • @enaler1001 not to mention a total 30 seconds of Manhattan's package, which felt like 5hrs of an NR-17 rated movie lmao. Just saying...but it WAS a good movie.

  • @TalesFromTheBooth The package never bothered me,and i watch it with my girlfriend sometimes too..it isn't like the camera zooms in on it and forces you too look at it,if you can't keep your eyes off of a penis thats your fault, lol

  • I actually enjoyed the movie alot. There were many scenes that left me smiling, since they were plucked right out of the graphic novel. In terms of the deeper themes, I thought there were some several of them actually. Loved seeing Patrick Wilson's rendition of my favorite character Nite Owl II, wonderfully acted. Also, i say the movie really outdid the comic in the fight scene department. Solid A- for me.

  • Btw one more thing I will say this the best was the Dr. Manhattan Orgin story that was done extremely well the only thing that really impressed me in the entire movie.

  • My problem with Zach Snyder is that he's uses slow motion in his movies and will continue to do that. A problem with me was that I thought in the Alley scene Nite Owl and Silk Spectre which was done badly had super strength. I don't wanna sound like I'm picky but I'm not a fan of Snyder's work which I wasn't a 300 fan as well.

  • Pete you are totally wrong about the ending. It was modernized to make more sense. I mean really, squid monsters would have looked really silly. Making Dr. Manhattan the ultimate threat makes way, way more sense as the "threat" of him can never be removed. He will always be there watching...at least that was the idea Veidt was going for in the movie.

  • I think the movie was okay.

    Just... okay.

    The book was perfect.

The movie completely missed the point, but sort of made up for it with the action.

  • I thought the movie was amazing. I think that there was no way that pete would have been happy with the ending because if they had put in that giant squid thing instead of Manhattan it would have been a joke and pete would be all butt hurt because they did it badly, besides thats my one critique of the original. I thought that squid like mutants that give out a psychic blast when they die went against the whole semi-believable tone of the rest of the book. Well done mister snyder well done

  • i really liked the movie and thought the ending was good because of the idea that we arent coming together to fight aliens like in the graphic novel(which i liked) we are coming together against basically god and to think of it that way is one thing the did pretty good in the movie. Couple of things i missed from the graphic novel but that is understandable cant wait for the dvd because the put back the whole hollis mason storyline and the black freighter(think i spelled it wrong)

  • the sex scene was a little much. but your rite the whole dr manhattan sequence was totally worth going to see the movie if your a comic book fan. 9.5/10 in my view it was amazing just not perfect. but i will say the dark knight wsnt as good as this. AT ALL.

  • Good rendition of a great novel. I hate you Veidt! I hate you Dr. Manhat!

  • I whole heartedly agree with all of you combined in this. Where was the history? The building of characters, the keene act. Consumerism, the decay of society.

I already knew going in the black lagoon was cut from it and it was nice to have a 'cameo' at the end of them but yeah. Overall Im indifferent. It was visually nice but missing the themes found in the graphic novel.

  • Loved it , "A"grade in my opinion .

and yes I liked the ending.

  • Justin is right. Snyder falls way short in the ideas department, which is a real shame. Without the perspective of decent ordinary folks, the film vulgarizes the politics to a choice between libertarian reaction and cynical liberalism. Crucially he alters Rorschach's formative experience. The public gang rape was balanced in the novel by the crowd that fights back in solidarity with each other right brfore the blast. Who watches the watchmen? WE DO! The film is great but a real let down too.

  • Thought it was great, but the sex scene had us bending over our chair looking for "invisible change land" because we came to see watchmen, not a porno with "hallelulia" in the background X_X

Why must Justin and Pete disagree about everything? T_T

    Squid works because its external.

Changed ending works because the energy attacked AMERICA. Thus making him external after the attack.

  • The film was awesome!

  • I loved the graphic novel BUT I went in to the theater not thinking "how is this going to compare." As soon as the lights went down, I dived right into that world and it was fantastic. It was fun and exciting and sexy and violent and everything a comic book movie should be.

  • I liked it didnt understand the book when I read it but watching the movie helped me to understand the story alot better. P.s. Iam glad they left that pirate shit out of it that stuff was stupid.

  • Grade A

It's a great adaption movie. I give Zack creds for pulling it off. I've had faith in his directing skills since Dawn of the Dead and I wasn't let down by his job on 300.

Not the best opener or box office winner in the long term in my opinion but DVD and BLU Rays will do well.

The visuals were intense and Alan Moore's charcters were portayed precisely.

I was annoyed by the plentiful "smurf- cock-mandingo" and so little Malin Akerman in the "buck".

  • i agree with alex jones review of them film

  • The movie ending makes more sense for this post-9/11 culture than if the producers stuck with the original GN ending.

  • It, in my opinion, made no sense in any culture, especially now. As I watched it, I was thinking, "Man, this is really deep and clever", and of course this film is supposed to make you think, so I did. I found that thinking only made the end feel stupid because Nixon declaring peace with Russia just because they happened to not blow up a city is ludicrous. Also, overall, the tone never really took itself seriously except for in the flashbacks and the poor ending, so it was hard to feel emotion.

  • No where near as good as The Dark Knight or Iron Man. Those IMO are the current high standard for comic films.

  • I disagree Justin. Only the actress who played Sally Jupiter was bad. Malin Akerman is a pretty good actress.

  • lmao "thats not your gonads"

I completely agree with Alex B+ visually stunning but its missing a lot of themes that were important in the graphic novel.

  • it was fantastic, the best part of the movie were the actors they were perfect fits, especially Rorschach man he is Rorschach, the ending really bugged me, as did a few other parts, but other than that it was good,i give it a four out of five

  • As a fan of the comic, I give the movie a 4/5 stars. I had some issues, but they got way more right than was wrong. For the general populace, it's probably more of a 2/5 stars movie. I think a lot of non-comic moviegoers just won't get it.

  • I hated Watchmen, so did most of the people I went to see it with. The ending sucked.

  • The energy crisis stuff added in is a slap in the face given how much they had to cut, especially since most of the cuts involve superheroes and how they fit in, or rather don't fit in to the world anymore. They also took it easier on "groups" than Moore did, as he basically blasted everyone harshly and let the reader decide. Even better job portraying a comic character here than Ledgers Joker for Haley, without whom all the actors might as well be computer rendered for all their "range" shown.

  • I had to explain the movie to my non comic friends.

    So epic fail.

  • if you haven't read the comic, watch it. if you have, watch it with an open mind. that's all i can say

  • thats the best way to put it. i knew going into seeing it that it wouldn't be perfect, but i enjoyed seeing it brought to life

  • it felt sort of like when you describe a comic book to a friend, "...and this guy was blown up and has superpowers now, and this other guy was trying to solve this other guys murder, and..."

it was a movie of what happened in watchmen without really capturing what it was about.

also, 99 luftballoons was so out of place.

That Being Said, i still liked it.

  • 99 luftballons was a song about nuclear war, but i agree that the timing was bad

  • I think you guys missed the subtle subversiveness of this film.

  • i saw it a couple of nights ago and i agree with alex and pete, i think they had to change the ending, however their choice was not the best. Still awesome freaking movie.

  • It was a good movie...It was dark and gritty and put everything on the table..great movie, great story Watchmen FTW!

  • this review is spot on!

And in watching alot of the Youtube vids i found that Non fans of the graphic novel rave about it, and die hard fans like myself would have wished to seen the ending in the graphic novel.

Great job guys, tell it like it is!

  • Rorschach really was the best part of the movie. The stuff they cut really made the movie flow (stuff on Mars), but there were still too many drawn out moments like the sex scene...SS is hot though. Having just read the novel for the first time, the ending really worked much better than a gimmicky squid from another dimension. Sometimes a page for page translation doesn't work for the screen.

  • My opinion is mixed, but my major complaint was that Nite Owl was the only character that seemed to react to anything. Everyone else was so rigid and nearly emotionless in their performances. That made the dialogue choppy when it should have flowed better. Still a good story with deep characters. I definitely see how Watchmen influenced the comic industry.

  • were there any knives or yelling in the movie?

  • when r u guys gonna review the jonas brothers in 3d? lol

  • i absolutely loved everything about the movie, absolutely EPIC.

  • A movie based on Watchmen should be Oscar caliber.

  • I agree with Pete about the ending

  • I liked what they did with the ending. The important part is really the decision that the heroes have to make and that stayed the same. You know, I like giant telepathic squid monsters as much as the next guy, but it's not really that important to the overall conclusion.

  • Paramount flyer* pardon my spelling, my keyboard is not the best.

  • No Squid? Fail.

Why didn't they just get rid of the spider at the end of IT.

  • its obvious that the Directors Cut will trump the theatrical release.....fanboys are TOOOOO critical on the movie...of course its not goin to be PERFECT..it will never be for ANY COMIC BOOK MOVIE....

  • I think the ending is also anticlimactic in the book too, but I think it works alright in the movie.

By that I mean the ending-before-the-ending. The big thing that happens.

BUT if you're talking about things like Nite Owl disagreeing with what "that" did in the movie and agreeing in the book, yeah, I didn't like it very much.

Oh, by the way I've heard there will be an extended version! Maybe on a (the) DVD.

  • Just watched it at the IMAX today. I thought the film was great. The graphic novel is better, but mostly because of the depth of detail given to the world and all of the ideas being put forward by Alan Moore. But there is only so much you can put into the film and if I had never read the novel then I wouldn't have found this film to be missing anything (still wana see the director's cut though). That said, from a movie lover stand point rather than a comic fan, Dark Knight was better.

  • Alan Moore was right this shouldn't have been made into a movie. . . . Dear God that was bad.

  • well Warner Bros/Fox jus got ur money..so they could care less wat u think of the movie

  • Guys its time to return to your own proper website. I accepted the closesure of pulpsecret but this youtube quality just doesn't convey the talent your show contains

  • There was waaaaay more good than bad in this movie.

The sex scene was poorly done.

    The dialog was clunky.

Dr Manhattans shlong was expossed was too much.

However-- all of that was 100% faithful to the original work. If it wasnt done then we'd all be complaining.

  • Avengers better be better.

  • The film is an adaptation of the comic. It is not the comic it self. People need to understand that. Steven King even said that he is not up set when a bad film comes out based on his books. He says it dose not bother him, because they are not his books.

  • Hi guys I liked the review I am personally avoiding this till the DVD comes out. but from what I've heard It seems like the movie is very inside baseball. I have read the Graphic Novel and obviously read comics since I'm on here, but I don't think people will truly get the Graphic Novel if they never read a comic ever and I was wondering do you think people who have never read a comic especially Watchmen will truly get the movie?

  • I enjoyed the soundtrack, the score not so much, thought the ending was superior to the graphic novel. I find these fanboy reviews to be overly harsh and critical. That movie was REALLY good. I think you may find that as you think about it and discuss it, it will grow on you and you will find yourself appreciating it more and more, I did. Anyway I recommend all people to go see it, you won't be dissapointment, just leave your fanboy hat at home

  • Totally agree, those fanboys drive me crazy. As a big fan of the comic, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I actually liked the ending and the movie was visually stunning. Great action scenes that were surprisingly gory. Seeing Dr. Manhattan's big blue schwanz made me laugh, Rorschach kicked ass, and good performances across the board. The only minuses were that parts of the soundtrack seemed a bit off and the sex scene made me cringe a little. A strong 4 out of 5 from me.

  • You guys should stay out of my head with your mindreading device. This review perfectly encapsulates my thoughts on the movie.

  • i did not like the ending very anti climactic never read the GN now i feel i should if the endings different

  • Seen the actual Motion Comic? I'm really impressed by it.

  • the movie lacked and couldn't have the depth of the book. I enjoyed it though. It's as good as it could have been. Watchmen depended on a lot of multilayered scenes and dialogue. Things that aren't real possible in movies.

  • I agree with Justin. I felt the movie in my gonads, Someone, who was sitting behind me, was talking through the entire movie. Finally I turned around and told him that if he said one more word I would beat the shit out of him. My friends laughed and said, "Calm down Rorschach!" Hey at least it made the talking dude quiet, right?

  • I was discussing the movie with my dad, who doesn't read comics. He said, "The ending didn't make any sense. How are they going to do a sequel?"

    I had a good laugh.

  • I agree with Pete.

  • Pete, you are wrong, wrong, wrong about the ending!

  • I friggin loved the movie. I was on the fence about the soundtrack the first time I saw it, but with very few exceptions, I loved it. The weird sex scene felt exactly the same as it did in the graphic novel to me. Also, I liked the ending, feeling that it served the same purpose, uniting the world against a common threat, without using a random exploding alien. Not that I would have been upset if they'd left the ending in, but I kind of like the new one. Also, I liked the over-written dialog.

  • Great review! I have to agree with Pete involving the ending. The threat of an alien invasion in the novel felt like something that would happen. The graphic novel is about humanity and how we handle any type of threat, whether it may be alien or not. The movie ending was ok but it only works on just one level. Yes, Dr. Manhattan is a superhero/god but do you really think Dr. Manhattan would attack certain places, since throughout the film he does not give a fuck? I do not get it.

  • What I thought was silly was "Ride of the Valkaries" when Dr. Manhattan was in Vietnam.

But, "The Times They Are A-Changing" during the opening montage was really good. I'd buy the DVD just to see that over and over again.

Yeah, I'd definately give it a B+. It got the main stuff, but the book is still better, since it's more layered.

  • I agree!!! The opening montage was pure genius... and whoever played Silhouette made me want to spank it 1,000 times in the span of 1 minute.

  • I thought this movie was great. I actually think that Watchmen=Better than Dark Knight!

  • Watchmen>Dark Knight. I agree.

  • Well I have Never Read the Book so I'll Be sure To Tell You How I felt.

  • i thought the movie moved to fast

  • I have to disagree on the soundtrack, I think it worked amazingly. Hallelujah was the perfect song to use for the scene.

Also I didn't hate the ending. I'm not sure the Squid ending would've worked on screen and after seeing it a second time I'm really starting to dig it.

  • best quote:

justin: so much blood in this movie...

    pete: which was enjoyable(!)

  • I read the novel last year. I thought the movie was outstanding. It had great moments that delt with some deep ideas and issues. It was very faithful to the source material. I liked the movie ending better b/c I seriously doubt the comic ending working on the big screen. I give it an A-. The ONLY two negatives I had were the performance of Silk Spectre II on Mars (wasn't emotional enough) and some of the music selection. While I loved the Hendrix in Act 3, the sex scene music was RANDOM!

  • The ending TOTALLY worked in the context of the film I think. It's a shame it was a 'threat' that was originally human, rather than a fake alien being, but it still makes sense.

  • I actually liked the film ending so much that I preferred it to the original. I know I will get a lot of heat for this but I will tell you why I liked it.

It kept the same ideas as the original ending but added one thing. It changed the threat from being aliens to the eye of god watching down on us. I find this is more in-keeping with the basic premise of the novel.

Although I still found the novel conveyed these ideas better overall, even if I preferred the film ending.

  • i actually agree, but not really as it fit with the ideas, but more the alien plot was a little wtf for me. this ending fit a lot more with the whole story imo.

  • When I got to the alien invasion it felt like it was coming out of left field. The comic book was about humanity. Using a threat like alien invasion was something like out of a super hero book. Using Dr. Manhattan felt like Watchmen came full circle. I believe there's going to be a great line drawn. People who like the movie ending better, and people who liked the graphic novel better.

  • I agree with what the boys said but i'll wait till i see the two extended cuts that are ment to be on the way before i pass final judgement

  • Rorschach was the best part of the film, perfect! The Leonard Cohen "hallelujah" during the sex scence was completely silly I'm glad the kept the music of the period in though and didn't have Linkin Park do the soundtrack or some other BS band.

I kind of wish they'd gone more in depth with Ozymandias. And if he was the smartest man alive, wouldn't he know that Dr. Manhattan could reassemble himself?

Popcorn movie though, no need to overanalyze the hollywood machine

  • I liked the movie, but watching it and remembering all the parts that were left out made me realise how deep and multi-layered the comic really is.

  • I liked the movie. It was close to the book while still standing on its own. If I wanted it to be the same as the book, I'd just read the book (again) I think fans should be happy the movie is as faithful as it is; the could have used Sam Hamm's script *sudders* That's just what I think, I'm mostly unbias so I never could be a critic lol :)

  • I think they needed to change the Alien Invasion to something else. Even I wasn't buying it in the comic.

  • i enjoyed the film, some of the music did seem out of place , but it was good songs they used so i cany complain.

  • First Post, cant wait to see the movie i knew it couldnt be as good as the graphic novel, i suspected the dialoges would let it down - but i still cant wait :)

  • These people are the best! Awesome reviews all the time!
