Nice, but you tell, at this point, they're just starting to get tired of singng EB; the early energy seen in the 1978 videos is now forced; the "bounce" is history.
One of the most tuneful songs ever written (plus they have many more). First heard it at a bar while traveling in Sydney! Everyone got up and danced!!
Come listen to this song and and many other "lost hits" and "chart wonders" from the 70's (and some 80's) on a free internet station, "OffTheCharts"
Go to Live365.com and type OFF THE CHARTS into the search box. Click on the station logo and the stream should begin. The link to the station is also on my YouTube home page.
Brilliant song - base line, drums and guitar topped off by organ and sax - a really tight unit - + good lyrics...could listen to it over and over.........
saw Martha Ladly a couple months ago for the launch of her book. She was sweet as ever & is a professor at the Ontario College of Art & Design. I'm looking forward to the new Muffins album in '09; it sounds great!
That opening riff is so cool... all these 80s bands owe a debt to the Ventures, Duane Eddy, the Shadows... it's such a cool sound, and you don't hear it much anymore.
maybe if you ever grow up, you'll appreciate this.. it wasn't supposed to be threatening. It is what it is.. if you ever heard it on the radio , late at night on a distant station you would have most likely enjoyed this ...context is all.
It was Martha Ladly (The blonde keyboardist) who really went places after this with 'The Associates'/'Roxy Music' etc, then had a total change of direction, she is a university professor today.
Wow, with the charisma of that lead singer, hard to believe they aren't still around! :-) [/SARCASM MODE OFF] Seriously, as a "new wave" band, I guess they were once seen as cutting edge or threatening or something ..... but there were women in my church's choir when I was a kid who looked exactly like her. LOL
I cannot deny that she looks a bit creepy. Anyway, the genius of Martha & The Muffins isn't focused exactly here, but in the later Lanois releases ("This is the Iceage", "Dancepark","mystery walk") where they sound noisy and creative, full of humor and energy, and very similar to talking heads working with Brian Eno.
"The genius" of Martha & The Muffins? Now there's a phrase you don't hear every day. Hey, this is a nice, catchy pop tune - I'm just not sure there's genius at work. I'll have to check out the Lanois stuff.
Hey Risington, Danseparc is going to be released as a 25th Anniversary Edition CD very soon. The album's been digitally remastered by Peter J. Moore (producer of the Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions album) and will also include 3 bonus tracks. Start shaking the tree!
yes yes yes, this song is a Spine Shivera! definitely one of the best track to come out of this era, we should be supporting music like this now days and not the force fed tripe we ingest every day on the top 20 radio stations! wicked crisp version, nice one for uploading!
La meilleure chanson issue de Toronto, EVER. Un groupe parfait. J'associe cette chanson au film "I've Heard the Mermaids Singing", également un chef-d'oeuvre, également torontois.
does the bass drum play 4 to the floor?

Clearly Martha Johnson is the real singer in this band. Ladley sounds like a wet paperbag.
Saw post muffins M+M open for the Eurythmics in NYC in 84
Holy Cole was singing backup and David Piltch on Bass(!!!)
Awesome gig.

I worked with a guy who played bass in a band with Martha Ladly in the late 80's in Toronto. )
He said she was great to work with.
The bass player was Mike Witzenhausen.
Can't remember the name of the band though.
