The instrument in question appears to be some form of lithophone. If anyone's interested, keyword search "soniccouture", which is the name of a company that sells soft synth sound libraries, go to their products page, and check out "The Skiddaw Stones", which has a lot of useful information and sound demos about this kind of instrument.
@ezzylock Hilmar Örn is fantastic but actually Sigur Rós's part in the composition was greater, or so I've heard. It's not been released yet but there have long been plans to release it on CD and DVD
@Steb54 Would it still be classified as a marimba though, despite having stone keys? (I'm an actual marimba player and find this extremely intriguing.
@ChestertheBigRedDog I guess it could be classified in a Marimba sub-genre, and its real name might be "Lithophone", although the one Sigur Ros is using in this video seems to be pretty unique. :)
@11willf if you watch the Heima documentary, they made this stone marimba from pieces of sheet rock, accompanied by some dude who lives in the mountains and makes instruments out of natural materials.
@11willf It's a marimba, one of the band members made it by collecting pieces of rock in Iceland. There's a tiny bit about it in the documentary Heima about a tour Sigur Ros did in Iceland.
It's also notable to point out to others that this isn't just Sigur Ros as the title would imply. This whole composition was a collaborative effort by Sigur Ros and other Icelandic musicians.
brings back childhood memories. i loved to read all of the nordic mythology books in primary school. and other than that, the song is absolutely stunning to begin with. especially the instrument made out of rocks i think it was? it was feautured on the Heima film as well :)
@Steb54 this hasn't been released on cd and they have no intention of doing so, however, there is a bootleg of it. Search around you might find it, if not PM me
@ezzylock It's actually the last track on the Screaming Masterpiece soundtrack. I purchased it as soon as I found it, myself. It's available on amazon.
@ezzylock It actually was released right after it first came out for free on sigur ros's website. But it was just a recording of this one time performance. You can DL a remastered version of it just google "victoryrosemusic odin" and it should be ur first result
It's absolutely amazing, and the fact that the "ðing pong" Instrument is made out of woodboards and blocks of cliffrocks..
I'm Icelandic myself and a big fan og Sigurrós, this instrumental masterpiece is probably one of the few things that I'm proudest of that has made it to "nation wide" community :)
Point was that they both can't see out of their right eye. I used blind as in 'can't see' so I think it still holds - if he ripped his eye out it stands to reason that he can't see with his right eye. The parallel was interesting to me, but I never held it to be historically accurate.
This was shown in Heima movie - it is a xylophone made of different stones found in nature - it was made by some artist whose name I forgot. But as I said, it's all in the movie... Excellent though.
Increible! Los sigo desde que descubrí el Agaetis Byrjun en el 2000. No he encontrado otro grupo que me haya impactado tanto. Su discografia deberia ser objeto de estudio! :D
To answer your question, dinglasan13,the instrument they are all playing in the beginning of the song is called "Steinharpa" in icelandic(a harp made out of stone). A farmer in Húsafell, Iceland, made this harp all by himself. The rocks are from a landslide close to his home.
the sigur ros site said it. it is no surprise that it has been delayed, most likely due to sr recording a new ablum. it will be released at some point.
