John Eldredge leart eastern mysticism and has trained in thearter he is the consummate false teacher laeding many astray·His ideas dont come from the bible."In modern shamanism, geese are also associated with communication, the ability to express oneself, especially through the use of stories. Its said that the goose as a totem signifies the importance of the childhood belief in stories and legendary places. The stories people liked most as a child might give insight in the patterns in their lives"
John has some awesome points concerning the role of a Father in his children's lives. I am unsure about some of theology. But I like his books & the way he articulates his points. In many ways what he says about us are true.
I have read "Wild at Heart" and "Captivating". Reading these books have been healing to my Husband and I and to our marriage. I cannot recommend these books enough. I wish I would have learned the stuff of these books when I was young.
Religion and its defenders have always been the most insidious enemy of true faith precisely because they are not glaring opponents; they are imposters.
How many of you critical people have actually read at least one of his books?
There is currently a spirit of the "antichrist" meaning anti-Jesus in the world today. Just look at Oprah, there are many paths to God as long as it's not Jesus. At the end of our time, every knee will bow to Him...
I really don't get all this dis your guys are putting on John. The quotes from the movie are just to show us what is ingrain into our hearts. Then saying he can't believe God to be all-knowing because God takes risk. The pain of a losing a relationship is there and it happen it really doesn't matter that he knew it would happen that just makes it more risky
JE not building doctrines? Doctrine is a teaching and JE is certainly offering that, fatally flawed as it is.
You know a little bit of theological terminology, but have neither the skill set nor the inclination for hard, exegetical spadework. You remind me of a guy with one karate lesson--he has unbounded confidence for no apparent reason!
Like most Emergents, when you're out of soap, you resort to name-calling. Brilliant!
If the arguments are so thin why don't you just answer them?
Jedi, there is a huge difference between being ignorant and disagreeing. Clearly you wear Refromed lenses, with differ from Catholic lenses, or Orthodox lenses... the authors you love reflect the lenses you see the world with. As with all lenses, there is some error.
Your assertion that the apostles had PhDs makes me smile, you do love the intellect, don't you! Christianity is not primarily intellectual, even though our intellects are useful in the pursuit.
If you have a problem with John's theology, it can all be boiled down to this: Men need to bring their hearts to God and he will give them the strength and direction they need to live victoriously.
I agree, he dosn't have degree in theology BUT he is writing about men's hearts, not everything is bulet proof theology, but nor is it against good theology, but for men IT IS true, I think he is on to something, biblically it is not 100% backed up but it rings true for mens hearts. It fits with God's other work.. creation.

Chrisclc...as a matter of fact the apostles did have the equivalent of a PhD in theology: they spent 3 years in grad school being taught personally by the Master Theologian. They were also often the recipients of direct revelation. Unlike John Eldredge (and, apparently, yourself), they actually KNEW something! There is no virtue in ignorance. Start reading people like Jay Adams, John MacArthur, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, J. Gresham Machen, B.B. Warfield, etc.

A macho God leads to gayness... The more we take male images of God ("King", "Warrior", and even "Father") literally, the more our relationship to God as men will automatically get a gay flavour. John Eldredge tries to use a macho image of God to safeguard his apparently uncertain masculinity. But this simply does not work, for a loving macho God implies a gay male beloved. Eldredge may be married, but if I look at the way he moves, talks and writes, I see one big sissy.
so you beleive that because he's your father it means your gay with him? and do you even understand what it means to love? can't you love and still be masculine? and there is a difference between macho and masculine, macho implies that it is a show, and in that aspect I agree with you, love is about being selfless, while being macho is for yourself, making yourself feel more powerful...
JediCaptian ; I take your comments he may not have a degree in theology or counseling but he does talk alot of sense. He does know the Bible, he knows a man's heart so I wouldn't sneer too much. The disciples were for the best part uneducated-Jesus also didn't have a degree in theology.
He isn't teaching theology per se, but he is trying get men back to being real men. Men who can love and fight for what they believe in.
Why are Christian people listening to John Eldredge as an authority on life and the Scriptures? John has a degree in theater and a light-weight counseling degree with minimal Biblical training.
Eldredge makes so many "ex cathedra" statements without any Biblical support.
His exegetical skills are almost non-existent. The popularity of his books is just another indicator that today's church is a mile wide and an inch deep. It's sad.
There is a real risk of idolizing this or any other book and slipping into heresy. But, I think that the key to understanding his message clearly is in looking to The Father for healing and relying on him for our every need.
Is there anything in particular that you disagree with, or is it that you don't trust him.
He has got a special gift from God to express Gods love for us, in a deep WISE and still everyday life kinda way .. This view changed my relationship with God to get deeper and stay there .. "Captivating" and "Sacred romance" has touched me the most. Thank you and may God protect you John, Stasi and all of you in RH min, you are so precious! God bless!
