  • The tune was composed by Burt Bacharach, lyrics by Hal David, originally performed by Dionne Warwick in 1964 or so. Laura had so much to give, and she gave, and God knows we were blessed, and our loss much felt........

  • Laura was the very best.....

  • Brilliant interpretation... done by one who knows the truth of a it.

  • Yes, this is beautifully sung by her; what a soulful intepretation.

  • This song was written by a white man and popularized by a black pop singer. It was never a blues song to begin with. Laura gave it a more bluesy interpretation because that was simply her style. She was from the Bronx and many of her early influences were black musicians. Her own music was color blind and was often bluesy. If anyone sang from the heart, Laura did. Given all I've said, why is anyone upset at the way she is singing this song?

  • Love it!

  • what a stupid argument this is.

  • She didn't write this song. But she did write "Stoned Soul Picnic," which is every bit as good.

  • @noahstfuboi Hey man, just let people be. Black, white or yellow is the same when we talk about feeling the music.

  • @noahstfuboi I say this with the utmost trepidation, because, frankly, I dislike putting anybody down. But the fact is you're speaking out of your ass. Sorry. & I'm sure most people on here agree with me.

  • @noahstfuboi Sorry you don't understand originality. I'm sure you need to be spoon fed your dreadful little cookie cutter pop with no taste, no style and no pizzazz. I'm sure there's a Katy Perry or Lady Gaga song out there for you to sashay around to.

Laura Nyro is amazing. She's lived this moment and TOLD someone to walk the EFF on by. Perhaps you're just unfamiliar with people living and believing the words they sing, instead of lip-syncing them like drag queens?

  • Great interpretation of this song, whoever said "horrible and embarrassing" in the comments below should listen to it again and again.

  • the songs this women wrote and the crass comments by some. someone is saying like you cant possibly sing a blues song unless you had a tough life and been there. come on.

  • @noahstfuboi First of all, it´s a Burt Bararachs song, so anyone is free to sing it the way they want. Second, your are rude when you speak that way; Laura Nyro was and IS one of the best composers and singers in pop music in the 20th century´s second half. So she might´ve had the license to sing anything she wanted the way she wanted.

  • This cover will break your heart. Like she really lived this.

  • It's funny. I really love Laura best when she performs her own material. For me, it's her original work, brilliant lyrics, and liberty she takes with tempo that stand the test of time and define her greatness--not the "covers."

  • God Bless Laura Nyro.

  • Let's be honest, this is not the greatest version of the song. I'm a Laura fan and I don't think I'll give this one another listen.

  • We should be hearing this on the radio. Laura was fabulous

  • LOVE U RUBY,,,,

  • Word, Gertrudis67. Laura Nyro is the SHIZZLE.

  • Hal David also wrote "Walk on by" as he was the lyricist who worked along Bacharach from 1958-73.

  • Like many geniuses, she wasn't fully acknowledged in her time. That's because she was ahead of her time. As we watch the current world model of male aggression, pre-emptive strikes, greed, and a denial of feelings and caring wreak their inevitable havoc, watch her energy and message prevail. When all is said and done, when the crucial battles so necessary to a defense of our ideologies and way of life are waged, the last world very often uttered by dying soldiers, on all sides, is "Mother."

  • She wrote this and most music other artists stole!

  • @lorichappelle Burt Bacharach wrote it, you need to get your sources right ... nevertheless she's a queen on her own ...

  • Happy Birthday, Laura.

  • Brilliant cover.

  • This is a very disappointing version. If you want Laura’s definitive live version of "Walk on by" it's Laura at the Fillmore East, BUT Sunday, May 30, 1971. BTW this, over the top, live version was but a medley.

serafinobolletta, Sorry to have to correct you, but any one who has listened to "Walk on By" and the innumerable covers KNOWS that "Walk on By" is by Dionne Warwick! Not by Burt By-what-you call him, lol.

  • @Rabdrake47 sorry to have to correct YOU Rabdrake, but serafinobolletta is right - "Walk on By" was composed by Burt Bacharach, with lyrics by Hal David, and performed originally by Dione Warwick (who performed alot of Bacharach compositions).

  • @mattbastardsen, my comment was an lol! Notwithstanding Dionne is this song.

  • @mattbastardsen OK, I can buy that - others composed it but Dione "owned" it in the public perception. It was hers ...and I loved it. But you have to admit that Burt was pretty damned good ... and us guys Matt, Batt, Burt, Ernie, the Count, the Cookie Monster and many more hang together

  • Forgot they were backed by LaBelle, what a combination. For those that don't know LaBelle was nothing like Patti sings today, they would get some serious reactions from audiences, (not good) Laura, too. She was notorious for getting to a recording session, then being unable to play or sing, not from drugs or alcohol, but emotion, sitting, crying while musicians, and studio time clicked by.

    '

  • laura nyro...who would not have a crazy crush on her...?

  • righteous.

  • This chick could PLAY PIANO! You want proof of it, go watch Sarah Bareilles or Norah Jones or some of the new girl singers play. they just sorta delicately wander around, they make a percussion instrument WHISPER. Laura really BANGS it. She knows what she's doing.

  • Laura Nyro was a brilliant composer(wrote many songs for The 5th Dimension). Her back up vocalists were called LaBelle, featuring the great Patti LaBelle. Walk On By was written by Burt Bacharach & Hal David.

  • Laura Nyro does not need induction into some "Hall" to validate her brilliance and legacy. It is obvious to anyone who hears her music. Always will be.

  • It sounds like Strawberry Sharon singing here and like someone had pasted grace slick's someone to love photo over top...rite?

  • That voice, that voice.....

  • .... could not be missed more. if i could possibly express how pissed that i am in not driving 30 miles to see her perform circa 1969 lawrence university, appleton wis, i would. alas, impossible....

  • I was just thinking about Dionne Warwick and Laura Nyro today...they were both loved by my brother-in-law to whom we are paying tribute to this weekend.

  • isaac hayes does a "killer" rendition.

  • When Laura did a copy tune, she always made it her own. I love her little arraingement of this number. She sounds like an angel. Then, the big blast at the end to fade..I never want it to end...

  • It is SO ironic that Laura's Melodies are complex and intricate like Bacharach's.

But she's supremely poetic and darker,

and hauntingly mysterious in her Music

    So Brilliant!

  • walk on by is not BY dionne warrwick

    is by burt bacarach

  • Burt Bacharach wrote "Walk On By". Dionne Warwick is the original artist of the song.

  • @serafinobolletta No, he stole it from her.....she wrote this.

  • @serafinobolletta............. no sweetie, she wrote it.

  • @serafinobolletta spelling? :)))

  • @serafinobolletta - Don't forget Hal David - he wrote the lyrics, Bach wrote the music. They were quite a team for awhile.

  • @serafinobolletta Let's not forget Hal David!

  • hopefully she will be inducted into the Hall this year.

  • Laura actually had two versions of this song. A quicker more like Dionne version and this one....which I love as well....she could sing the telephone book to me...

  • I "discovered" her music by the time of her death. What a loss, and what a treasure I found!

  • WildStyleKid516:

you need a music hearing aid dude!

LN is direct from the heart, to the heart!

  • laura was the graetest

  • Do you think Burt Bacherach was as offended as you?...........I think he may have felt honored.

  • shes a genius ask elton

  • Do you have any idea who this lady is and the amazing songs she wrote?

  • Excuse me. This lady is only the major icon of the sixties. Such a individual we will never see again. She is only to be adored. Love this chick.

  • @Gertrudis67 lover her if you will, but try not to call her chick

  • @Gertrudis67 I totally agree with you first three sentences. But what does that have to do with the use of the word "chick", chick?

  • @Gertrudis67 Amen. Laura Nyro is THE GREATEST.

  • I agree. Obviously an acquired taste that I don't believe I/we will ever acquire!

  • Interesting version.

  • I was at this concert , Laura was amazing !~

  • That's fantastic!.....remember any details about that experience?
