  • The Federation is root beer.

  • Garak... always awesome.

  • Oh, it's THIS one! Even through the years when DS9 wasn't around to watch, I remembered this scene especially... Now, of course, you can watch just about anything!

  • I never watched the series when it was on tv but after seeing all of it on Netflix I've come to appreciate the great characters and actors in it. These two were amongst the best.

  • This scene belongs alongside the one from ST:TNG where Guinan introduces Worf to prune juice.

  • My personal fav scene is when Sisko, Ducat and the fine Weyoun are sitting at table in Quarks. Sisko hands over a bottle of kanar that has been allegedly poisoned by Dukat. Anyways Sisko + Dukat have a little bitch fight when all of a sudden Weyoun drinks the dam thing to end it. The face on Dukat and Sisko gives me lols XD

  • @pimpjuice739 You're right, that is a good scene! And you describe it well.

  • @marktrade88 any chance you remebre the nuber of the episode?

  • Why protect an oppresive regime that has been a rival for decades from an ally? Am I the only Trekkie who thinks Capitan Benjamin Sisko IS A FUCKING RETARD?

  • @theknightswhosayfrak What are you acting childish about?

  • @theknightswhosayfrak Well, he doesn't act like a retard.

  • @faetrn Sorry, i might have overeacted. I just don't understand why you would side with the CARDASSIANS against the Klingons. That's like siding with Persians against Vikings.

  • @theknightswhosayfrak Cardassians are slightly more kick-ass than Klingons. They're more intelligent, and they have this whole sadistic "you will do what I say" type of thing. They know how to make shit happen. But, the Klingons also have their strong points....i.e., no one can out drink one. ^_~

  • This is my favorite!

  • Oh, it's a great scene, but I doubt it could be called the best. None come to mind at the moment because I haven't seen it in a long time. The best would probably have to involve Odo and/or O'brian.

  • After the Dominion took over the station for a while, I'm sure Quark had no lack of customers for his Kanar. Or did he remove it before then?

Then again, he did prefer selling to the Federation instead.

  • Hahaha, I love root beer.

  • Okay, JS, but, If they had an A&W on DS9, i'd make a killnig. And plus my mom works there so i could tottaly live on DS9 and be with Julian, Garak and Weyoun! *SQUEALS* :D XD =/\=

  • It is... insidious.

  • Garak rocks.

  • This level of insight you'd NEVER find on Voyager or Enterprise.

  • @garamonde I agree! I loved DS9! There was a level you'd NEVER find on ANY of the other series. This scene is so well written and acted.

  • the Star Wars prequels needed a scene like this about Jedi.

  • I wish these two interacted more often this is awseome! I can see why the poster would say this is the best scene from ds9. Mine is Sisko's monologue from "in the pale moon light" garak was also a major character in that episode. Oh and worf challenging guiron is up there as well.

  • Isnt Kanar much darker then that drink?

  • @Alan123123123

There are several varieties of Kanar. Consider how many different colors Beer has and even flavors.

  • "It's insidious!"

  • In another episode, Quark said, "I should have gone into insurance; better hours, less scruples."

  • That´s why i love DS9, it´s exactly because of such scenes. Such a dialogue would have been impossible in TOS or TNG, there the Federation was mostly presented as "good" and "flawless". Here you get another point of view from people who are outside the Federation but are depending on it, whether they like it or not.

Great script, great acting, great message.

  • I don't get why owning your own moon is something so exclusive? I mean surely if other star systems are like ours there are loads of them. Not to mention he could go into unexplored space and get one.

  • @redplague

Moons also can mean inhabitable moons. And very little is unexplored in those sectors. Even dinky little planets are claimed by someone in Star Trek. Plus, what would you rather have, a house near a popular place, or a house in the middle of nowhere?

  • @Draknfyre Yeah but isn't it implied that the moon was for mining or resources rather than some kind of colony?

  • @redplague

No, he wanted to live on it. He mentioned having enuf money to buy a moon, and settle on it.

  • Insidious ... Love it...LOL

  • wow! just wow!

  • kanar look like carmel

  • I can see the attraction for you.

  • When I came to America, this is how I felt about root beer. I still don't like it tough.

  • they should have made holes in Quark's ears. You can see the rubber so clearly... Why does it have to be so that with years special effects lose their essence? :(

  • Bullshit! The best scene from DS9 is when Quark rigs the computers on the stations to issue those free refill mugs and the ads on the view screens. That jingle is a classic!!!

  • @SIM2402

    COME TO QUARKS

    QUARKS IS FUN

    DON'T YOU WALK

    RUN!!!!

  • @SIM2402 That's Quark's best scene. This is the best SERIOUS/Political scene in the show. :D

  • @SIM2402 "Come to Quark's... Quark's is fun! Come right now! Don't walk... RUN!"

  • @rkmugen (Quark's logo spins around)

  • It's all true. You will hate your first can of soda.

  • @duderanch way of the warrior

  • Ah, Elim Garak. Easily the best character in the Deep Space Nine series, if not the whole damn genre. Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy, he did it all, and in the end his own planet, the one who cast him out for being a double agent and a security risk, welcomed him back as an ambassador for New Cardassia. If it were any more ironic you could make horseshoes out of it.

  • @th0th Ambassador? You must be talking about a novel?

  • @marktrade88 :

In the novel The Never-Ending Sacrifice by Una McCormack, Garak becomes the Cardassian ambassador to the Federation and resides in Paris. Granted this isn't show canon, but it's still the evolution of the character in the novels.

  • @th0th fascinating, I'll give it a look

  • A Stitch In Time by the actor who played Garak ends with him as Ambassador as well if I recall because other novels do mention Garak as being the Ambassador.

The Never Endijng Sacrifice is a sequel to the episode Cardassians that follows the character Rugal who bit Garak's hand and went back to Cardassia.

  • @th0th To be honest, I like Garak too. >:D He's got that air about him that you feel like he's evil, but you just don't care and HAVE to like him. ;)

  • @th0th yknow in STO hes in charge of the new detapa council

  • @th0th Hee hee, that last statement was clever. I hope you don't mind if I use that. =P

  • This is one of the scenes i can quote almost verbatim despite only having watched the episode 2 or3 times

  • @derekmarlar What episode was this from? Thanks.

  • ★★★★★

    Classic.

  • Definitely one of my favorite moments... But it's hard for me to pinpoint anyt one scene as the best.

  • I had to look up the word 'cloy'.

  • Just an observation/question. The actor who plays Garak.... he seems very similar to the bad guy in Dirty Harry no? Same guy?

  • @NevadaWrangler

Yes. He got lots of death threats over it and had to get an unlisted phone number. The police had to investigate the death threats since they were credible. People honestly believed he was a serial killer due to the performance. He also had a hard time getting roles in film due to being typecasted due to his stellar performance of a serial killer.

  • I always thought an interesting story would be someone flooding the Ferengi market with replicated latinum, causing rapid inflation. I remember reading something from one of the powers that be of Trekdom stating Ferengi didn't work as main villains because they're all about greed, and you could just replicate money so what's the point? Obviously this was never explored in show. I do remember an episode of DS9 where the Federation gave Cardassia 3 Industrial replicators.

  • @Uridien

There was a novel where someone did figure out how to replicate latinum or make it look like latinum till it was shown how to unmask the fool latinum.

  • As good as this scene was, the best DS9 scene has to be the Sisko end monologue from "In the Pale Moonlight".

  • @Amar7605 That one is definitely up there. However I think that scene really only has the weight it does because of the entire episode before it. This scene by contrast, having its own weight, somehow brings everything else into its orbit.

  • Well damn. I like root beer.

  • Two best actors on the show.

  • "No one ever went broke selling weapons" Until the customers figured out they could use replicators...

  • @Uridien It's a fascinating subject to think about all the things that can't be replicated in Star Trek. It's something I really wish they explored more in the show, but also something that a fan can really geek out on.

  • @marktrade88

The novels and other background materials state that replicators are limited in what they can do some materials cannot be replicated plus some stuff is more energy expensive to replicate. Also there are people who do not want replicated items since the replicated items do not have the quality of hand made items for example. Plus if someone wants a item from the past why would they use a replicator when they want the antique item.

  • @toomanyaccounts that is kind of untrue to the canon tough. if a replicator can replicate matter from energy as we can see that in the case of food. it should be able in theory to replicate most elements of the periodic table. and bamm you have the purest iron or gold or whatever.

that allways seemed the reason to me why "gold" is usualy consider worthless in star trek. and the only currency in intergalactic trade is latinum(cant be replicated). (or commodities)

  • @chockn

In the canon non replicated food and items are seen as luxury items. In the case of food and drink replicated stuff is said to not have the correct taste or texture. In certain cases this is due to inexperience in replicating the food or drink.

"bamm you have the purest iron or gold or whatever."

In reality however you often don't want the purest of an element. Pure gold is brittle. Gold jewelery is often only a percent pure gold. Old school test was to bite into gold.

  • @toomanyaccounts well if i want to work with something it has to be high purity. as a chemist i dont want impurities to screwup experiments and so on. and if you want to bring impurities into any kind of replicated element youcan do that later on. why have impurities replicated into the element?

and i said that about the food myself too. but seeing food is made up of carbohydrates and so forth the replicator should be totaly capable of replicating other elements aswell.

  • @chockn

Food tastes differently not only due to the ingredients but how said ingredients were raised and even farmed. Just because you have the atomic structure of the food doesn't mean you would reproduce the exact taste. It's like cooking something from fresh and cooking it from frozen or reheating something. The taste is quite different and even in blind taste tests a good to great palate can tell the difference.

  • @toomanyaccounts im sorry but that isnt true. of course a grassfed cow will taste very different then one that has been living on a diet of everything but grass. but the atomic structure is indeed the deciding factor. if the replicator is capable of getting it right down to the atoms then it should in theory have no problem replicating the differences in taste aswell. because after all these differences are only made up by different compositions of organic aminoacids and fats.

  • @chockn

Sorry not true. Atomic structure doesn't tell what the texture of the meat is. Chemists etc try to duplicate natural tastes all the time even trying the chemical structure and guess what the artificial stuff doesn't taste like the natural stuff. The people who do artificial sweets etc will tell you in theory they can replicate the taste but in reality they cannot replicate the taste.

  • @toomanyaccounts as a chemist i have to tell you that you are simply not correct. everything comes down to atomic structure of the molecule in question. what are artificial sweets? you mean jelly and winegummy?

i can tell you why it is not allways possible to recreate certain things in real life. we dont have replicators and synthesizing certain molecules is simply not possible within a certain budget. with a replicator you could do that 1:1

why do you think "beaming" works

  • @toomanyaccounts

Not quite. Replicated food and drink is done by replicating down to the molecular level, not the quantum level. Quantum-level replication is too costly for food, but is used in transporting. This leaves single-bit errors in the food. Imagine the food is 99.999999999% correct. Some people can tell the difference, but most cannot.

It's not like replicated food is terrible, and real food irreplaceable.

  • @marktrade88 it all is very confusing because if you can replicate things or materialize things down to the atom youd think they could figure out how to replicate other things too.

but then again you also hear about "industrial" replicators and who knows if those arent capable of having a much higher "resolution" then normal replicators. i guess normal replicators would put so much imperfections into any gun that it would break. old pistols/revolvers shouldnt be a problem tough.

  • @Uridien

Some things are intentionally non-replicable, much in the same way that scanners will not allow the user to scan money.

  • looks like 121 people like root beer!!!

  • poster the best scene is the last one of the series where they all look back on their lives and everyone moves on.. worf looks back before heading though the air lock julian playing the game.. thats an episode not this one

  • @locutus340 No way, that's one of the worst. How can Worf have a flashback without Jadzia? Unthinkable.

  • @marktrade88 Because they didnt want to pay her a royalty for using her likeness? :P

  • one of the most intelligent scenes of layered wit that ds9 has brought to the table

  • One of my favorites too!

  • That's some mighty fine acting for a sci-fi show!

  • I agree about the root beer. It's the vilest-tasting non-alcoholic beverage that's ever passed between my lips.

  • @AntimatterSemen

Was this British root beer or American root beer? They taste quite different with the British one being considered vile.

  • @toomanyaccounts I'm not sure, I've only had American root beer and it tasted detestable enough for me. I never knew there were worse forms of it.

  • @toomanyaccounts I'm going to try to find imported root beer now. :)

  • Garak is the MAN!

  • INSIDIOUS!

  • Why does he have a bottle right behind him?

  • What is so interesting about good actors is that they have usually had all sorts of parts, sometimes on Broadway, singing and dancing.. could these two have starred in "CATS"? Hollywood and Broadway are strange places.

  • @imagineers101 It would be awesome if they did star in cats!! I love that broadway musical!! LOL.

  • Best. Series. Ever. Although I can't stand root beer either. He should have offered Garak a cherry cola. Orange, cream, grape, regular cola, anything but root beer.

  • Ha. Buffy's principle from the first three seasons.

Ds9 is hands down the worst trek iteration.

  • @Blamepandora85

Enterprise viewers would disagree with you. Enterprise and Voyager are considered the worst.

  • That's better dialogue than I'm used to in Star Trek (and I'm a Star Trek fan!) Great Federation metaphor. :)

  • I read that this scene was added at the last minute cause the episode was running short.

Don't you love how that works out?

  • Yeah, that is good.

  • Garek is pure brilliance,

  • These two acting put Alexander Siddig and Terry Farrel's antics to shame(more so).

Especially together, they seem completely genuine and natural. Very talented actors.

  • ah my two favorite characters in all of star trek life is good lol

  • Garak and McCoy are the best characters in Star Trek.

  • You're right. It is the best scene!

  • 0 Dislikes.

The best part is Garak's reaction to the offer.

Quark: "Take a sip of this."

    Garak: "What is it?"

Quark: "A human drink. It's called Root Beer."

    Garak: "eeehhh...I don't know."

  • @Karochsharon - His body language is great, too. It's completely believable. That's good acting.

  • Ever notice how Kanar keeps changing color and consistancy through the show?

  • @peterlicious Yeah, I have noticed that. I just figured that there were different types of kanar. Or maybe they're seasonal. :)

  • @marktrade88

It could just depend on the age or the vintage.

  • @marktrade88 That's been my nerdly assessment. In the real world, we have so many different varieties of beer, each with its own taste, headiness, and even consistancy. It would make sense that on other planets, they would have beverages that while called by one name, have distinctly different characteristics depending on the region and subculture that makes it.

  • @marktrade88 its all we could find to fill the bottles. this is apple cider i think

  • @username8434 It sounds like you worked on the set? How interesting. From now on I will be tempted to refer to apple cider as "kanar." ;)

  • @marktrade88 yeah i did. my second job actually

  • @marktrade88

At one point it was corn syrup and the actor who played Damar got weird from drinking it.

    en.memory-alpha. org/wiki/Kanar

  • @peterlicious Watch Casey Biggs interview on you tube. He mentions the the changes to Kanar and his input on those changes. Good viewing

  • @peterlicious It's actually carosine syrup. But after the actor who plays Damar complained so much about the taste they changed it to sugar free maple syrup which he hated even more

  • @ThatBritishVlogger

It wasn't the taste. They were using Karo syrup, and according to the crew, he was "acting weird" after drinking too much. It was too much sugar. So they switched to the sugar-free syrup, and added thickener.

  • @ThatBritishVlogger hahaha, interesting. And Damar was drinking large quantities in almost every episode. Poor guy :)

  • @peterlicious

It's because what they were using before (some kind of syrup) was making Damar and other cardiassian actors sick :)

  • @peterlicious i always figured it was like wine, there are differnt types, much like there are Reds, whites, Chablis, Zinfandels, Seasonals, Varietals, etc.

  • The fact that Quark would throw his lot in with the Federation, which he does, proves how much the Federation has changed him. Without even knowing why he risks his life passing messages to Starfleet. He gives his employees breaks and even vacation pay. He doesn't abuse them nor does he deal in anything really licit. You might even call Quark a soft-core criminal. He wants to make some extra money, but he doesn't want to hurt anyone to do it. Face it Quark - you're a good guy.

  • @sunnchilde

Very true - but he also had great insights on humans and nicely critical look.

  • @sunnchilde

You forgot during the occupation he paid Bajoran workers a little more than the minimum required, and sold food and I think supplies to them at cost. And the Mirror Universe version stood up against the Bajoran military, and tried to help the oppressed, and was killed for it.

  • I'm gonna take it as a bad sign that I randomly clicked on this link after having just watched this episode last night.

Give me back my life, Trek. Please?

  • I have been a Star Trek fan for well over 40 years and I rate Garak as one of the best characters ever. Definitely a fave of mine.

  • @HortHawg To be fair, DS9 has more than its share of well-developped characters, compared to other Trek series.

  • @HortHawg - And to think he was going to be a one-shot character in the one episode where Bashir meets him.

  • @JMcH Wasn't he supposed to be a gay character?

  • @HortHawg Pan/Omni-sexual.

  • @DeftCrowMk3 Thanks.

  • This cracks me up everytime I view it, but i don't know which episode it it's from, can anyone help me out with that?

  • @magdalena1983 The Way of the Warrior. The first show where Michael Dorn joined the cast as Worf. :)

  • @magdalena1983 4x02 "Way of the Warrior" Part 2

  • A while ago, I saw a picture of Garak on a image for rootbeer. I now know where its from. Thank you.

  • lol how is this the best scene?

  • If sarcasm were a deadly weapon, Garak would expunge all life from the universe. He's so awesome.

  • It's insidious!

  • @Technocrat110 It's vile!

  • @marktrade88 So bubbley!!!

  • @503leafy And happy

  • @marktrade88

    Just like the Federation.

  • @marktrade88 It's electric. Boogie-woogie-woogie!

  • @marktrade88 it's the federaton!!
