@HIDETCHI I beg to differ. I live in Japan. I went to the Japanese locla library. I bought "The art of shogi" which came in both english and Japanese. Both say, in their respective language, that in general one uses the rook to attack, and the bishop to castle one's king.
I do not give an utter farthing for what you think. If japanese people who devote their lives to Shogi say this, then you have nothing to stand on. Upstart yank.
@AngelBiLove I don't think such statement exist in "The Art of Shogi". Would you please specify the page where the phrase "in general one uses the rook to attack, and the bishop to castle one's king." is.
@FuckTheSystem321 Well, in most matches they do. Weaker, stronger, but they do. The point is, that original position doesn't really protect the king enough to stop the attack and if your opponent once break through it's almost impossible to stop him. It's not necessery, of course, my friend played often without doing it. But that may be the case, why he lost most of games^^ The king is also vulnerable for bishop king-rook fork, if he stays on his origin position.
Hello Hidetchi, does every professional shogi player know all the Yagura defenses? If so, it should be really importante for us to learn them, right? (^-^)
Hi. HIDETCHI, I have 2 questions. First of all, is it a MUST to memorize all castles (Double Static Rook, Static Rook VS Ranging Rook and Double Ranging Rook)? Or, can I just memorize one castle that I think is good and I use it every time I play. Second, is there stalemate in Shogi, like Western Chess? =)
@KampungJering No, you don't need to memorize all the castles. You'll eventually be able to recognize them as you play more and more, but the only ones you need to know immediately are Mino, Yagura, and Anaguma. The type of castle isn't as important as knowing the fundamentals of castling, so that you know how to attack each castle based on its formation. As for your second question, no, there's no stalemate; a stalemate situation is a loss for the king.
phew I think this is the hardest lesson yet - I'm trying to copy down all the castles and it's quite exhausting :P would you say that castling in the middle of the board like Central House and Duck Legs is unusual, because usually castling happens to the sides.
You castle away from the rook if there is time, however with some openings like the yokofudori, you don't have the time to make a safer castle (of course if you feel saucy, you could always just ENTER THE CRAB)
@emperorofosiris1: Since Yagura is a static rook castle, you will want to attack with your bishop, rook, knight, and right silver on the 2nd or 3rd file. Since Yagura is generally played when both players have built a Yagura castle, that will be where the opponent's King is.
great tutorial as always.. now i need a shogi board.. lOL Anyways i just want to tell you that after watching this.. i got a stupid idea.. Castling in Chinese Chess (xiang Qi) LOL good work dude
Hey your videos are great! I've watched all of them so far and they are extrememly interesting! I love them and I'm beginning to understand and love this beautiful game!
I had just a question for you... Why is there is so much contrast between go and shogi players? And how do you think the two games relate? Which one is the best for you?
I agree - I played go for several months, but was constantly frustrated after losing to stronger players who had memorized all the life and death patterns. With shogi, I feel like I can actually improve and have fun with the game.
Thank you so much for posting these videos HIDETCHI i just made my youtube account a few seconds ago to thank you for them. Recently me and my friends at school have started to play and it helps alot to have things like this, On shotest shogi they only show you like...4 or 5 castles and there pretty mediocre but ive looked over this lesson a few times and i now know how to use the yagura castle properly the gold one ^^
Yes, you're right. Bishop drop on 3i is also a powerful attack when 5th-file pawn has been moved. So, usually, in a Bishop Exchange Opening, you shouldn't move the center pawn as shown in the video.(^^;)
In the shown position (6:16, but assuming sente adopts a regular Yagura) couldt sente simply close bishops escape route and then start attacking gotes bishop on 6i by moving his gold from 7h to 6h, or is this too dangerous because it leaves his king unprotected?
A very good question. You must be a good player. You're right. It's not an immediate threat when it's like the example in the video. But if the battle had already started in frontal area, you won't be able to capture the Bishop safely, especially when square 8g is beeing attacked. The Bishop is aiming 8g, so the Gold on 7h can't even move. Actually ,in the middlegame or endgame, even exchanging the Bishop with the Gold on 7h isn't really a bad idea, because the Yagura will be destroyed.
And also, when sente is in the middle of attacking, with the Silver and the Knight on the right being further advanced towards gote than in the video, the Bishop's threat to 4g or 3f is very effective to rout sente's offense. It would be difficult to prevent gote from making a Horse on 4g or 3f.
And I'm sorry I have to end the video so soon. Youtube doesn't accept videos longer than 10 minutes.
Great lesson and thanks for your explanations. A pity that the lessons end so soon
I have one question regarding the so called Amanos Yagura (6:05) which is used in order to prevent a bishop drop on 6i. In case you would have castled the normal way (that is king moving to 8h and gold 7h), would a bishop drop on 6i really become an immediate threat for sente or only in combination with a frontal attack?
just skipped the first 16 videos. This is where the stuff begin which i dont undestand

I know you posted a link in an earlier video but where could i buy a nice wooden shogi board? Preferably not flat, like an itame board?

Why is it that when you showed us hollow yagura your bishop was gone? I mean, there is no bishop belonging to you on the whole board? Is it captured?
Hikari4452 2 months ago
@Hikari4452 No, it means nothing. Bishop is not a part of castles, so just please forget it.

Might be stupid question but is Bishop part of Yagura or its ok to use it in attack freely?

The bishop is not part of Yagura.

What do you mean by 'so much contrast between go and shogi plyaers' ?
I like shogi more than go. Go is pretty difficult for beginners but shogi is easier to get to level where you can enjoy.

I hear that Shotest Shogi explains pretty well about Shogi rules, but I'm glad you found my lessons as good as Shotest Shogi.
And good Japanese :-)

Yes, you can say that. But we sometimes make Silver Standing Yagura intensionally, so it has a name.
HIDETCHI 3 years ago
"Yagura" is hard to translate. Maybe something like a "watch tower".
But some people call this castle a "Fortress". I think they intentionally altered its meaning.
