I never understand why some sports seem to be big in some countries and non existent in others. Im from Canada and we have Canadian Football which is big in Canada filling stadiums all over the country but has no grasp outside of Canada.
More like this (UK "related" nations)- Most popular sports .... Australia- Aussie Rules Footy - Canada: ICE HOCKEY **Canadian Football is pretty big regionally, but not compared to Hockey............ - Wales- Rugby Union ....- Scotland - Football/Soccer -.... England- Football/Soccer - ....Ireland Rep- Gaelic Footy........ - N. Ireland- ??? - ........South Africa- Rugby Union - ........New Zealand- Rugby Union -........USA.- American Football
It is not easy, coz No one can play a real game except coming to AUS. and In the geographical view, we're far from the rest of the world. I think at the moment only New Zealand, Ireland know our game better but there also have high growing rate in South African, US and UK.
Personally i'd prefer it just in OZ , i think 95% would, this international stuff will never ever happen seriously in the way the AFL is operating, i don't even think it's meant to, i think the purpose of exposing it is to simply make others overseas aware that this actually exist's as another sporting option even for them.
"sparda700" your comment sounded like a typical simple close minded soccer fan... lol you people are quite amusing
Ya,when thing go globally, there alway changes n can't maintain what they were supposed to be. But tell you what,I am from Hong Kong, been AUS for 4yrs and I love you guys's game, I feel so pound of you guys to hav a game like that. I wouldn't learn the word "Legend" without watching AussieRules.I am a very shy person but when i play the game, the oval is the only place to make my voice loud and show the real me.(I think in the "Essence of the Game",the woman team captain said the same thing 2.
So who do you think organizes World Cups, games, tickets, advertising, broadcasting and so forth? The people or the people in charge of the those things hence the 'management'. With proper management of games it would have grown internationally many decades ago.
AFL is in the same boat as NRL the managerial staff or CEO's whatever you like to call it just don't want to make it grow so they sit on their cash and laugh it up.
Soccer was spread by colonialists in the 19th century. Australia has never had a cultural influence over the rest of the world. Soccer also colonised the world because all you need is a ball. The poor in the 3rd world dont necessarily have access to 180m fields like Australian working class. If soccer was more exciting than Aussie Footy why did Aussies choose Rules over soccer as a spectator sport despite being a British colony? Its easier to organise a world cup when ex colonies play the sport.
@neddy05 in ALL of the excolonies a different sport became number 1 because of NATIONALISM (gaelic football, afl, canadian football, american football, rugby union, etc). All nations that suffer from soccerphobia.
@wade2bosh Gaelic football was played as early as the 1300s, rugby was invented by the brits, so nationalism had nothing to do with that in NZ or SA. Gridiron derived from rugby and Aussie Rules was created to keep cricketers fit. Nationalism? No evidence. Soccer spread to Europe, it was exported by European colonists; the Spanish (South America), French, Germans and British (Africa & Asia) etc. Lots of nationalism and revolution in those places...yet no soccerphobia.

I like footy, but in some way, I agree with you.

Good luck for the Aussie Rules.

Management has nothing to do with the international spread of Australian Rules. What shit logic.
