Quotes.."Best woman vioce I've ever heard!"..."Canada's national treasure".."joni is a wonderfull singer and song write.."...........................All the above and then some.
Okay, I like Nazareth's cover of this song, it's a groovy track and they did a good job with making it their own. However, I feel the emotion in Joni Mitchell's original, which I think draws me in from a different angle than the angle Nazareth's version does. I don't compare which is better, as they are both so very different approaches to the song.
when Joni Mitchell heard the Naz-Cover of her song the first time, she coudnt believe it was a real rocksong. She was very happy about the success (she got fat cheques) and said: from now, its a Naz Song . . .
And yes, Naz liked her song as she did it, cause they hear all kinds of good music. And when they piced up one song to perform it, they transformed it always to someting that really rocks :-)
Glad she wrote it. Glad I never heard her sing it till now some 30 years after Nazareth's version. Cudos to NAZARETH for the huge improvement!!!!! Joni is a very good singer, but Nazareth blows the doors wide open on this. Most of the time I wish people would leave originals alone. NOBODY does superstition like Stevie Wonder AND NOBODY does Cinnamon Girl like Neil Young. Those need to be left alone!
coffee shop rock? really? joni's a legend. I don't get people that bash the original versions of songs. If it wasn't for her WRITING and ARRANGING the song in the first place, Nazareth wouldn't have had a song to cover. and, yeah, same song, but completely different genres, so you're basically comparing apples and oranges. And anyone that dislikes Joni Mitchell needs their head checked.
@poeticjournalism 'anyone that dislikes Joni Mitchell needs their head checked', come on, that's a bit extreme! I appreciate she has talent but do not enjoy listening to anything she does. Music is very personal, something moves one person, doesn't move the next. This version I will never listen to it again, love how Nazareth does it though.
@poeticjournalism Absolutely agree, but I think the album version is better than this live one. There's an urgency in the album version that's missing here.
@rwmusic totally agree with you in that respect. joni's my all time favorite artist, but I definitely think the studio versions of her songs are superior to the live renditions.
i can listen to this song 100 times and i still won't figure out how nazareth came up with the cover they did makes me wonder if alanis mourisette has anything worth covering XD
@MusicForYourFunk i am just the opposite of you. I know her place in history as a song writer & I know she is special. This is a great song. But i hate this version. I think it is because i have always heard Naz's version. This one never got played on any FM radio station i listened to in the 70's the heyday of FM album rock. Just like Naz's Love Hurts always heard that one but never heard Roy Orbisons original until years after Naz covered it. Two great songs by great artist other cashed in on
@MusicForYourFunk Have you listened to the acoustic version by Nazareth? 1000x better than this version and Nazareth's studio version combined. It's perfect.
@bozo47p I love Naz, and still do but I can't listen to their version anymore after hearing this, and I thought theirs was amazing for many years. They do great covers thought, and Dan is one of the all time greats
@bozo47p It's just a genre thing: you don't like the genre. Most people like both versions because they are powerful expressions, but in different styles.
I didn't know that the Nazareth version wasn't the original till recently! Wow. I really like this version, she has a lovely voice. Won't compare them as it would be silly to do so. Both great versions in their own right.
Wow, I always thought it went 'cant' talk to you, baby, I get so weak, sometimes I think love is just physical'. But here it's obviously 'mythical'. Live and learn. Both fit and physical seems to follow from the 'weak' reference.
i could be wrong about this , but i think this is one of those cases where the singer/songwriter switches up on words sometimes when doing live concerts .
You either like the folk version or the rock version,or maybe both joni and naz both exceptional artists in their own right.

I blows my mind that heavy metal bands cover Joni's songs. She's just that damned bad!

A rare case of a remake (Nazareth's version) being far better than the original. Gotta give Joni credit for writing it, though.

Always in the mood for Joni. Everyone else can take a number and wait, from the deep rich earth of Joni's musical soul other things can follow!

Joni wrote this ,,so give her the respect ,,without her, Naz would not have it on the album, they must like her to.

@bozo47p
see , thats the way i think of Naz's version ... to me , it's just 'okay' , nothing special , just them playing a good song well.
however joni's version , to me , make you feel like shes sharing herself , not just words. i FEEL the song when joni sings it .
